Tokina 24-70mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

One of the most versatile focal lengths available, Tokina's AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX Lens is a standard wide-angle to portrait-length zoom featuring a bright, constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. Designed for Nikon FX-format DSLRs, this everyday lens is ideally suited for nearly any genre of photography, including travel, portraiture, landscape, and event shooting. Three aspherical elements pair with three super-low dispersion elements to produce bright, evenly-illuminated imagery with controlled aberrations and distortions, while multi-layer lens coatings help to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Well-suited to working in a wide variety of situations, this standard zoom covers an array of perspectives while maintaining consistent illumination for working in challenging lighting.

Benefitting the usability, a one-touch focusing clutch permits quick switching between autofocus and manual focus modes, and an internal focusing design maintains the overall length of the lens during use. A Silent-Drive Module AF system suits both stills and video recording, too, by providing quick and quiet performance. Additionally, this lens sees the incorporation of a nine-blade diaphragm, which contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when employing shallow depth of field shooting techniques.

Compatible with Nikon FX-format DSLRs, this standard zoom can also be used with DX-format DSLRs where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture provides consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to greater control over focus position and when working in low-light conditions.
Three glass molded aspherical elements and three super-low dispersion (SD) glass elements combine to enable high resolution and consistent, even illumination with minimal distortion. The trio of low dispersion elements are arranged within the rear lens groups and also help to reduce chromatic aberrations for greater color accuracy and clarity.
Multi-layer lens coatings reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and maintained color fidelity.
A Silent Drive-Module (SDM) offers fast and quiet autofocus performance to benefit both still and movie recording applications.
A one-touch focus clutch mechanism permits seamless switching between autofocus and manual focusing positions.
An internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens form factor during operation.
A nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality, which benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

    Tokina 24-70mm f/2.8 reviews

    AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good solid, well-made and takes great pics! This lens is very good. I read many reviews and most of them are true. The first thing you notice about this lens is that it is a tank---well made tank too. It is not weather proofed but I don't plan on shooting in the rain. It focuses nicely. I have a Tokina 16-28mm lens so I am use to Tokina lenses and their weight. The only reason I don't give this lens a 5 star is its weight. It is heavy. You can get used to it but it is what it is! The optics appear to be good; however, I just haven't had the lens long enough to really get into the details yet. Overall, I am very happy with this lens. This lens is not for everyone, but if you already own a Tokina this lens should be no surprise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2nd review 4 months later and more pix. Recent results using Tokina AT-X 24-70mm f2.8 with Nikon D810, ISO 64. Astonishing detail, color, contrast. Landscape, 1/250@f11, ISO 64, circular polarizer. 16x24 print made with Epson StylusPro 3880 is noiseless, extreme detail, razor sharp, beautiful saturation across wide dynamic range of 36.3mp D810. AF is very accurate and essential for a geezer with failing eyesight. Using the back button focus on D810 works every time. (a first for me using AF) I think this lens is the best on the market for under $1,000.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Is Amazing!!! It was this or the proven Nikon 24-70. From all the reviews I've read, I decided to try the Tokina. THIS LENS DELIVERS!!! Sharp as sharp can get!! Rich colors and at f/2.8 the bokeh is gorgeous! I already own the Nikon 24-120 f/4 and I love that lens! But I needed the f/2.8 DOF and the close focusing capabilities of the Tokina. Both has it's own purpose. Yes it's a big lens and I really don't mind the heft. I'm use to shooting with my Nikon 70-200 all day. I like that Tokina focused their design of this lens on durability and quality. It is a TANK! The price is hard to beat. The money I saved over the Nikon allows me to save for future lens needs. Below is some test shot showing the sharpness of this lens. The AF kept up with my unpredictable subject. BUY this lens!! I can't imagine how the optics can get any better!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Range Perfect range for many applications. Adequate speed (2.8) to shoot indoors at a moderate iso with a usable shutter speed. Zoom ring a little stiff, but I knew that going in, not that bad. I like the intuitive manual focusing method and am used to it from using it on my Tokina 2.8 100mm macro. Lens is heavy but not prohibitively so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent especially price-point. Great all-around lens that I bought with Nikon D810. Extremely sharp. Great portraits 35-70mm at f 2.8. Amazing color saturation and contrast. All minus reviews of this lens are heavy, stiff to zoom (easier if point down to zoom in to tele, point up to zoom wide) I'm new to AF so can't comment. Overall thrilled with outstanding imaging performance, about 1/2 the Nikon 24-70 price, down $120 from what I paid B&H a month ago. Value+

Rated 5 out of 5 by from obscenely large lens The images are from this lens are very good. They are shparp with high contrast. The lens is heavy with huge diameter. It feels good to use. The zoom motion is very stiff without a bit of creep. The focus is not as faat as other ATX lenses although very precise. The images have a very clean quality with crisp detail. Most images were taken at or about f4 4.5. Out of focus area are not terriblely creamy or smooth. Just Unique.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Year Later I've had this lens for over a year now. It still continues to amaze me. It is one super sharp lens!! I like how I can focus down to 13 inches to get that pseudo macro shot. The AF is dead on with my Nikon D4s.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressed I was very nervous to go with a third party lens. I have used both Nikon and Tamron before but did not know anything about Tokina. I am very impressed with it. I think it honestly has better sharpness than the other lenses.
