Celestron 93973 overview

  • 1Description

Transform your smartphone or tablet into a wireless controller for your computerized telescope with Celestron's SkyPortal WiFi Module. It plugs into the Hand Control or AUX port and begins to generate it's own WiFi signal to directly connect to your mobile device without the need for a router. Since it uses the telescope's power there are no batteries, plugs, or cables required.

The SkyPortal module works in conjunction with the free SkyPortal mobile app available for iOS and Android devices. The app features a database of over 100,000 objects with astroimages and audio descriptions of hundreds of them including the history, mythology, and key features of them. It can assist with the telescope alignment and if you hold the screen up to sky, it will identify the objects based on your location, date, and time. If you don't know what you want to look at, the SkyPortal app will take you on a guided tour.

SkyPortal WiFi Module is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A MUST HAVE!!!!! A MUST HAVE!!!!!! This thing is awsome! Setup the scope, align the spotting scope, use your phone to align the scope with 3 stars, and you are done. Then you use the app to find an object to view press go to and it GOES RIGHT TO IT. If the alignment is good the object is almost dead center every time. We enjoy the narations that are avaliable on a lot of objects. The kids 4,6,8, and 10 year olds love this and it makes star gazing much more entertaining, they have spent upwards of an hour and a half looking at the sky. DO NOT by a telescope without this or something similar.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I have installed this on a CGE-Pro mount. Plug it in, power up the telescope and away it goes. My complaint is with the Skyportal app. I guess it has no way to communicate with the Nexstar hand control, so the app cannot access any of the information stored in the hand controller. So, for example, if your telescope is aligned and then put into hibernation with the controller, you must redo the entire alignment and calibration process with the app...and vice versa. Clear sky observing time is precious here, so rather than go through that rigamarole again, I have just continued to use the hand controller. The blinky lights on the wi-fi module are cool, though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfection right out of the box hi there fellow star gazer'sThe latest SkyQ-link2 adapter for android worked perfectly right out of the box. Plugged it into my Celestron cgem9.25hd scope and connected it through SkyPortal to my Samsung Galaxy Note Pro. Then went straight into the 4 star alignment process without any hitches. After that every object I selected, aligned perfectly. Great to have the system up and running hassle free.Well done Celestron.Chris Murphy JP.Adelaide South Australia

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Ready for Prime Time Was so excited to get this if for only the fact that it auto enters your coordinates and time saving a lot of time alligning the scope.I have to say that my first experience with the iphone 6+ was less than stellar. The app has a lot to be desired in the fact that the manual scope control is terrible and unresponsive, often continuing motion after the button has been released making initial allignment very tedious. After i locked the screen orientation it was a bit better but not by much. After alignment is achieved there is no way to switch to the hand controller as it is not alligned at the same time and is useless, this has got to be addressed in software updates as does the scope motion control. after traveling to about three objects it suddenly locked up and wouldn't work, the only way to get it working again was to restart the app and in the process lose alignment. At this point I was completely mad and just went back to the handset. The next day I downloaded Sky Safari Pro, a paid app and can not get it to work at all and haven't had the time to mess with it much. Bottom line is this thing would be the bees knees if it only did what it says it will but the software needs to be debugged first and has to communicate with the handset to be of much use at all.Maybe the VERY expensive Sky Safari will work better if I can ever get it to work. But as of now don't waste your time on this thing as it is not yet ready for actual use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sky portal WiFi module Works great once its connected properly with proper settings. Frustrating at first as it kept losing connection but I kept experimenting. Ended up having to turn off my home WiFi and plug into hand control outlet on avx mount. Once i got it to stay connected it is very easy and fun to use. I recommend, but warn of frustration while finding the settings that will allow it to stay connected.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not fully functional with AVX mount I currently connect my laptop to my AVX mount with a USB to serial cable. Celestron's web site says the SkyQ Link is compatible with the AVX, so I purchased this to use with NexRemote/SkyQLinkPC in the hopes of getting rid of the cable. However, it turns out that the SkyQlinkPC is not compatible with the AVX. The device does work with the SkyPortal mobile app, but wasn't really interested in that, so I returned it. This is apparently a well known issue that Celestron has known about for some time but has no timeline on addressing it. Fortunately, there was another way to accomplish my goal. After returning the SkyQLink I purchased an IOGear wireless USB hub. This works perfectly with NexRemote and has allowed me to get rid of the wire. This method is actually a bit cheaper and provides more wireless and mobile options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Acquisition to Telescope Attaches easily to certain go-to computerized telescopes. Very easy to install and operate after learning how to program the telescope by aligning stars. I was able to view many objects in the night sky that are difficult to locate manually. Also, the library of objects to view is thorough. As mentioned earlier, it took me a couple of hours to learn how to program the telescope by aligning stars. Also, I have not had luck attaching it to a existing network and only can operate it connecting directly to the module.
