Apple iPad Air 2 overview

  • 1Description

Work and play faster, thinner, and lighter with the space gray 64GB iPad Air 2 from Apple. Featuring Apple's 64-bit A8X chip and M8 coprocessor, the Air 2 delivers 40% faster CPU performance and 2.5 times the graphics performance when compared to its predecessor. It's also 18% thinner at 0.24" and weighs 0.96 lb. The LED-backlit 9.7" 2048 x 1536 Retina IPS LCD display's anti-reflective coating reduces glare by 56% and uses a single-layer design to eliminate internal reflectance for richer colors, greater contrast, and sharper images.

This iPad features 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi technology with MIMO support for download speeds up to 866 Mbps as well as Bluetooth 4.0. Share documents and files with AirDrop and stream your iPad's content to your compatible HDTV and speakers with AirPlay.

The Air 2 features Apple Touch ID technology, which uses your fingerprint to unlock your device as well as make secure purchases in iTunes, iBooks, and the App Store. The 1.2MP front and 8MP rear camera let you take high-resolution photos and videos as well as videochat in HD while dual microphones reduce background noise. The iPad Air 2 runs iOS.

Thinner & Lighter
The iPad Air 2 is 18% thinner than its predecessor at 0.24" and weighs just 0.96 lb. While lightweight, the Air 2 is still durable, thanks to its aluminum unibody construction.
Retina Display
Within the 9.7" LED-backlit touchscreen, the 2048 x 1536 native resolution renders text and images at 264 pixels per inch and a total of over 3.1 million pixels. The display uses a 1-layer design, which eliminates gaps between layers, along with the internal reflections caused by those gaps. This results in richer colors, greater contrast, and sharper, more vivid images. The display also features a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating to keep your screen clean.
Tri-Core A8X Chip
The iPad Air 2 ships with the Apple A8X chip, which is 40% faster than the A7 chip in the previous iPad Air. It also has 2.5x the graphics performance of the A7 chip. The A8X is built upon second-generation 64-bit desktop-class architecture, giving it high performance while retaining a 10-hour battery life.
M8 Coprocessor
The iPad Air 2 was designed to be on the move. That's why the M8 coprocessor measures motion from your iPad by pulling data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, and barometer. This allows your apps to give you a better experience based on the movement of your iPad Air 2. It's a task that would normally fall to the A8X. But by using the more efficient M8 chip, you save on power use and the A8X chip is able to focus on other tasks.
Battery Life
The iPad Air 2 may be faster and more powerful, but it's not more power hungry. Even though it's 18% percent thinner and 40% faster than the previous-generation iPad Air, it still gives you the same 10-hour battery life, thanks to the A8X chip's energy-efficient design.
Touch ID
Your fingerprint is the perfect password. You always have it with you. And no one can ever guess what it is. Apple's Touch ID technology uses a unique fingerprint identity sensor to make unlocking your iPad easy and secure. Just put your finger on the Home button to unlock your iPad. Touch ID is capable of 360 degree readability, so no matter how you're holding it - portrait, landscape, or anything in between - your iPad knows who you are.
802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi
With more than twice the Wi-Fi performance, thanks to the 802.11ac antenna and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) technology, the iPad Air 2 can reach download speeds of up to 866 Mbps. With dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and MIMO, that's more than double the data rate of the previous-generation iPad Air. So now when you want to download a movie, share photos or documents with AirDrop, or just browse the web, your connection is faster than ever.
FaceTime HD Camera
With FaceTime video calls on iPad Air 2, your conversations look better than before. Make a video call over Wi-Fi and see (or show) every expression on the display. The FaceTime HD camera features a backside illuminated sensor, which brightens up your FaceTime chats, selfies, and group Photo Booth shots, even in low-light situations. The camera records 720p HD video and 1.2MP photos, and features an f/2.2 aperture, auto HDR, face detection, burst mode, exposure control, and timer mode.
8-Megapixel iSight Camera
The 8-megapixel iSight camera on the Air 2 was designed to help you capture all of life's moments at a moment's notice. Use the Retina display as an easy viewfinder to frame the perfect shot. Quickly swipe between capturing stills or 1080p Full HD video at 30 fps. Every time you shoot, the image processor in the A8X chip works with the camera to make the adjustments necessary to make your picture as great as it can be.

The iSight camera's five-element autofocus lens features an f/2.4 aperture, hybrid infrared filter, backside illumination, face detection, exposure control, panorama mode (up to 43MP), burst mode, tap to focus, geotagging, and timer mode. When producing videos, you can record in 120 fps slo-mo or make time lapses to speed up or slow down the action. Video recording is also enhanced by image stabilization, face detection, 3x video zoom, and geotagging.
iCloud
iCloud automatically makes sure you always have the latest versions of your most important things, like documents, apps, notes, and contacts, on whatever device you are using, even a PC. It lets you easily share photos, calendars, locations, and more with friends and family. And with Find My iPhone, it helps you find your device if you lose it. iCloud also backs up and secures your files, account names, passwords, and credit card numbers. Your iCloud account comes with 5GB of storage, free.
Siri
Siri lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, check the latest scores, and more. Ask Siri to complete tasks just by holding down the Home button and talking. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean and even responds to you.
AirPlay
AirPlay functions off of the wireless capabilities of the iPad Air 2 and allows you to seamlessly watch or listen to your content on your HDTV. When connected to the same wireless network, content can be controlled from the iPad and ported through or watched on auxiliary devices.

    Apple iPad Air 2 reviews

64GB iPad Air 2 (Wi-Fi Only, Space Gray) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 278.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I needed I decided to buy it for: - demonstrating my photos using hi-res display with good color reproduction (photos made by different cameras, digital and film ones) to my friends and discussing them - reading and answering e-mails using web interface while out of office - browsing web sites Also, I made an assumption that 64 Gb would be enough if I don't want to upload everything to the cloud. The iPad met all my expectations and I also found the slow-motion video capability to be an interesting feature for family fun and the front camera and sound quality is better than what is available in many laptops, so I'm using it for some of Skype calls too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceeds expectations I decided to replace my travel laptop with an iPad and I've been impressed with both the user friendly interface and the apps. For routine business tasks and networking/communication, it's ideal. I'm not sure why the iPad is available in 16 GB and although I bought 64, I may trade up to 128. In 2 weeks time, it's a third full, and with mobile devices it seems storage is always an issue. There does seem to be some sync issues with iCloud, and the device frequently requires me to re-enter cloud and iTunes passwords, which is annoying. I really like the larger size compared to the mini or the iPhone 6 and the lighter weight compared to a full size laptop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My wife couldn't live without it. This is a replacement to an iPad 2 that was stolen while on vacation. Email, Websurfing, publishing flyers, Video chat. What we love about it is the size, weight and speed. This thing is much faster than the iPad 2 it replaced. We got the 64GB Wi-Fi model to replace a 32GB iPad 2. Even though 32GB seemed like adequate storage when we acquired it, it became apparent after awhile more storage is better. The only thing unliked is we got the Apple's Smart Case. It's sturdy but really made to work on a flat surface such as a table. When trying to use it in a lap it does not have the ability to adjust well. I should have thought that one through more before spending $.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Apple iPad Air 2 I use the iPad Air 2 from home where I can look up information regarding my Bible Study lessons. I can make notes for presentations to my class without having to print anything. I've researched my family and can now download it so I can share what I've found with my older brother. I also use my iPad Air 2 for shopping and keeping lists of things I want to buy. It is great to have when I have to wait in a doctor's office. There are games to play and things to read. The only down-side I have noticed is it took a little time for me to learn to navigate it, but I had never used an iPad of any kind before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big step up from earlier iPads I use an iPad to read the daily newspaper, to read books, to browse the Internet; to read email... almost everything I'd use a laptop for. I bought his to replace an iPad 2, which is 2-1/2 years old. (My daughter claimed it it.) I also got a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard so I could use it to take notes at meetings and write documents, so it's almost a full substitute for a laptop. MS Office 365 runs on it, so it's possible to create Word documents, although moving them off the iPad to a PC is at least temporarily a bit of a hassle because of a bug in Office 365. You can't add Microsoft's cloud storage service, OneDrive to the iPad even though Microsoft says you should be able to. You can, however add DropBox. The Air 2 is about 2/3rds the weight if the first & second generation iPads, so it's a more suitable book reader, and the processor is very clearly much faster. Apps open more quickly and everything seems to happen more smoothly than on the old iPad. (That may be due to the fact that Apple's iOS 8 doesn't run as well on older iPads as iOS 7 does). The Retina display is significantly clearer, especially for graphics and maps. There's less of a jump up in clarity for reading the paper or a book. The fingerprint reader works more reliably than the one in the iPhone 5-S. Battery life is about 10 hours of heavy use -- about the same as the older iPad. Despite the drop in weight, it doesn't feel fragile (but don't drop it...). One other thing that's notable and highly commendable -- if you have an old iPad and you back it up to iTunes just before you plug the new one in, iTunes transfers everything -- apps, settings, the way you've arranged your icons, email passwords, the works. Put the old one down, pick up the new one and there doesn't seem to be anything you need to fix or change. That's a long way up from what you get when you move from an old PC or old version of Windows to a new one. iPads are expensive compared to e-readers, but the iPad Air 2 does so much more -- really, almost everything you can due with a Surface or even a PC or MacBook Air.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing The iPad is fast, amazing, and great for content consumption. Since I use my iPad primarily for viewing media and playing games, the iPad is great for me. My use is sporadic, so I find it awesome that I can put my iPad away at 75% battery and come back to it two days later with it having 73% battery. The screen is crispy and vibrant, as well as visible outdoors in direct sunlight. The iPad is sufficiently fast and I never found it stuttering or slowing down except for the occasional home screen lag. It also syncs well with all my content in my iTunes library. The iPad has fit perfectly in my everyday life, and is always reliable enough as my go-to lightweight content consumption device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I used my old iPad all the time, particularly for recipes, but after several years it finally stopped working. This new iPad is much easier to hold and use due to the lighter weight. The screen seems clearer and the camera takes much better photos than my old one. I also think the responsivity is much better than my old apple. If I were to mention any negatives, it would be once you invest in a bunch of apps you are most likely locked into iPads from that point on. They are very pricy and if I could have found all of my applications I might have switched to a different tablet. I am still happy with the product, especially if it lasts as long as my old one after almost constant use and traveling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent What more has to be said? It's apple! It's iPad! It's an excellent piece of hardware. Am amazed at how well unedited photos look on this thing. A friend of mine showed me his unedited vacation photos of his trip to Greece on his iPad and I was blown away at the quality of the rendition. I bought this for use with the cam ranger, which it pairs very well with. One thing I wasn't aware of is that when you buy an app on this, it automatically downloads it to my iPhone as well. I've only had it for a week, so I am still exploring it's capabilities. But given I have an iPhone, the simplicity of use of that translates well to the iPad. If you can afford one, buy one. You won't regret it.
