This mic looks like it has to be mounted in a vertical position to get proper L/R sound, correct? i.e., if I was to mount it from a left or right-facing cold shoe mount, I'd be recording an up/down stereo image, correct? Basically, can the mic be rotated in its shock mount, or no?
Ryan, I mount mine in the flash shoe of my DSLR. It's pointed at right angle to my subject and works well.

Will this record audio only and does it write to the memory that's in your camera ?
Yes, it can record audio only. For example, I have used it with a digital audio recorder (i.e., no video). And, yes, it writes to the camera's memory.

What is a good boom pole for a mic like this?
After purchasing the AT8024, I received an email from B&H suggesting the following two boom poles each of which goes for $49: Cavision Mixed Fiber Mini Boom Pole (7.5') B&H # CASGP323 MFR # SGP323 OR Rode Micro Boompole - 3-Section Boom Pole B&H # ROMICROBOOMP MFR # MICRO BOOMPOLE . I don't have any experience with boom poles but thought I'd pass this info along to you. As the previous answer stated, you'll need an extension cable to span the length of the boom pole plus enough extra to plug into your audio recording equipment or camera.
