Kessler Crane KC Crane Overview

The KC-8 Crane from Kessler Crane is a lightweight camera crane system. It features anodized aluminum construction with dual support rails that make the crane twist resistant. An invertible camera platform enables standard or underslung camera capability. With 360° of horizontal rotation and a height range of 11', the KC-8 Crane can be used to capture sweeping cinematic shots that you can't get by just raising your camera in your arm.

The KC-8 mounts to your tripod head's release plate for mounting on your tripod. The internal sleeve bearings provide smooth boom up and down action independent of your tripod head. The adjustable weight bar allows you to adjust the balance of your camera on the crane using readily available (but not included) household weight. The crane is very portable and is easily broken down for transportation or storage.

Tilt Control
Manual, fixed-angle and automatic tilt control
Adjustable Weight Bar
Allows you to adjust the balance of the rig on the fly. Weights can be added or removed (remember to secure and safety the rig before adding or removing weights), and the weight bar can be slid fore and back to fine tune your crane's performance.
Portable Disassembly
The crane is easy to disassemble.

Is this intended to connect directly to a tripod ...

Is this intended to connect directly to a tripod leveling base or panning base with a 3/8" stud? Or would I use a QR plate like ARCA? What are the two knobs on the mount in the photos for - what are they securing?
Asked by: Eric
This is designed to connect directly to the tripod.

What is the payload capacity? It states 20lbs. But with a 20lb payload x3 for counter balance, you get 60lbs. Then when you add in the 27.5lbs needed to balance the crane without a payload, you get 87.5lbs of counterbalance weight. The manual states that you should not exceed 75lbs of counter balance. So that puts the max payload for a balanced crane at 16lbs. That is 20% less than the advertised max payload. So what is the true safe balanced payload capacity and counterweight capacity?

Just got feedback from Kessler. With the Extended Weight Bar, you can distribute the weight to meet the 87.5 pounds required to get balance of a 20lb payload. Thank you!

question

will the manfrotto 509HD be able to mount this crane? because I already own one and do not want to buy the Hercules as it is unnecessary. I really am seriously considering this crane though, so a answer would be awesome. Thanks!
Asked by: Jerry L.
The Manfrotto 509HD is a really nice video head, however its load capacity is only 29 pounds. This crane weighs 30 pounds before you even put a camera on it. Also the load capacity of a tripod head diminishes the further away the load gets from the center. Which is why we recommend the Hercules 2.0 Head when using this crane. It has the load capacity to handle the crane and most cameras you would put on it.
