    Steadicam MERLIN-2 reviews

Merlin 2 Camera Stabilizing System is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 160.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stable video This is my first stabilizing system. Very well built device. Easy setup the hard part is balancing the camera and learning curve. Putting the Merlin together is easy it's the camera lens configurations that makes it a little harder than normal. All of the reviews I read basically say the same thing hard to balance and use. I was expecting to have issues with balancing it. I think it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be what the issue I had was the camera lens configuration I wanted. I have a Nikon D500 with a Tokina 12-24mm. The setup works well and I'm still working on how to hold and shoot with it. Overall very happy with it

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I returned my Merlin 2. I struggled with the Merlin 2. No amount of reading and rereading the formulas available in the set-up guide and online were able to get me dialed in. I am fully open to the fact that my difficulty with the merlin may be chocked up to user error. I tried. I had my partner try. I tried at different intervals and in different settings. It just wasn't quite right. It was also heavy and difficult for me to hold - I don't have the strength in my hands and forearm. I can not say the product doesn't work as intended. I can not even say I wouldn't recommend it - it just did't work for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Time + Effort = Excellent Results Although the learning curve to master the Merlin 2 is high, the results you attain from it are worth the investment. I must have seen the DVD included with the kit at minimum 5 times, there is also a series of videos on Youtube titled Steadicam Merlin 2 - Weight and Balance, Part 1 that were beneficial. I'm a hobbyist who purchased this tool to track my kids ages 1 and 4. I'm using a Canon 5D MKII with a 50mm lens to film, and again although it took some time and effort to learn the results are awesome. All in all would definitely purchase again as the videos I'm recording now with these tools will be priceless 20 years from now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy when on discount I bought this when it was heavily discounted, and am not disappointed. This is a very well built, solid piece of gear that packs up very small. It's so compact it makes for an easy decision to throw into my pack when travelling light. Once you read the manual a couple of times, and pay very careful attention to the recommended guides, you should be up and running on no time. I've never used a gimbal/stabiliser before, and had it balanced in about 15 minutes (after reading the manual twice). It takes a bit of practise to start getting smooth, controllable, and repeatable camera moves, but much quicker than I expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Steadicam at its best Having used camera stabilizing systems, this one is at the top of its game for DSLR and small camcorders. The setup was easy and the instructional DVD was very helpful. We needed something that was easy to handle for events and documentaries, which really added some drama to our shots. The camera seems to float through space as it should. The workmanship and compact design gives a professional sleek appearance. I like sturdy carrying case which is compact and provides protection of all components and is perfect for travel and carry-on. The B&H sale price made this a very affordable price, which I could not pass up. Thank you B&H.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for the price It is lightweight!!! For a 5'2 112lb person, this is VERY functional. Was looking at FlyCams and cheaper options initially, but they are super heavy for me, even for stronger folks -- if you look, sometimes reviews on them will say a strong arm is needed. And that's for certain. This is super light and means I can film with my DSLR for a long time without arm fatigue. IT DOES TAKE TIME to learn. The instructions and DVD are helpful -- but a few hours of time will need to be blocked to learn it. And then, practice. I haven't mastered it. It's level but not as easy to use. First time using a stabilizer, so I imagine it takes practice. However, the DVD and instructions helped me in getting it level. And the 1-sec drop test works - the most important part. Good luck!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE I'm actually quite upset. I've had this for years, the first time I got it, I tried to use it with Canon 5d Mark III with no success. I am now, years later, trying to get it to work with Sony A7R II. (1) Why, after all these years, has the cookbook not been updated? (2) This thing is impossible to set up, and even if it *IS* possible, it shouldn't take hours and hours and hours leading to day after day, with no success. On top of this all, I have the vest and arm. This stuff is literally collecting dust, and I'm out HUGE money. GRRRR.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Requires patience and skill This is a decent product but requires a great amount of patience and a little bit of skill to operate. I've spent many hours working with it and while I'm close I still haven't been able to get a perfect balance. I have seen improvement the more I work with it though. I think it's just a matter of commitment. I am worried about the plastic guide around the gimbal though. Hopefully it holds. I'm surprised they used plastic for that. Might be alright though. The gimbal itself is metal. I bought this as part of the daily Deal Zone for $150 after the rebate. I think it's a great product for that price but I don't know if I would have paid too much more for it. Perhaps my view on the price will change after I've mastered the device?
