Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The 12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC Fisheye Lens for Nikon F Mount from Rokinon provides a 180° diagonal angle of view on full-frame cameras for an ultra-wide angle, distorted perspective that is useful for architectural interiors, landscapes and creative experimentation in any photographic application. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light situations and enables some measure of shallow depth of field control.

The lens' sophisticated optical design consists of 12 lens elements arranged in 8 groups including three elements made of low dispersion ED glass and two aspherical lens elements to minimize coma and chromatic aberrations. Highly effective nanocrystal anti-reflection (NCS) coating applied together with UMC coatings improve light transmission and reduce ghosting. Its internal focus system enables its compact design and keeps the front element from extending during focus.

This Nikon F-mount lens is manual focus lens but due to its featured AE chip provides focus confirmation in the camera's viewfinder and enables the use of Auto exposure mode and P/A/S/M modes. As a manual focus, manual aperture lens, it offers a wide, easy to grip focus ring and bright aperture, distance and depth of field markings. A removable petal-shaped lens hood is included.

An ultra wide-angle fisheye lens with a 12mm focal length on full-frame cameras and an 18mm equivalency when used on APS-C format cameras. Its distorted perspective is useful for interiors, landscapes, group shots and many creative wide-angle applications.
Extra low dispersion and aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations for sharp, color-accurate imaging.
Nano crystal coating and ultra multi-coating on the lens elements improves light transmission and reduces ghosting and flare.
Manual focus lens with an internal focus system and wide, rubberized focus ring.
Manual aperture control with bright markings for aperture, distance and depth of field.
Sturdy metal barrel with removable petal-shaped lens hood.

    Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 reviews

12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC Fisheye Lens for Nikon F Mount with AE Chip is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Optical Quality Fisheye lens I own both DX and FF fisheye lens made from Samyang (Rebranded as Rokinon in the US). These lens have huge DOF and very easy to shoot with. Just set to 1.5m on the distance ring and shoot. The focus achieve on all the objects from 1.5m and beyond. Optical quality is as good as the expensive lens. F5.6 (corner to corner) is the sweetspot follow by F4 (Center). At F2.8, the picture has still usable sharpness. Use this for Milky Way photography, Meteor shower photography and landscape photography. Very nice lens to have.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens for the price The greatness of this lens is conditional on how you use it. It a regular paced day where you are shooting leisurely, it is fun to use and very sharp. During a fast paced shoot like a wedding, it can be a little difficult to use. It can sometimes be difficult to get on the camera and if the lens hood comes off, it can be a bit confusing to get back on. These won't be issues once you know the lens very well but it can happen,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great optics, solid build. I have used this lens briefly to shoot events, train car interiors, performance, and I'm very happy with it. As a full frame lens, it's a big step up from the 8mm f4 version. The sharpness is very good, CA seems fine. It's very compact compared to wide zooms, and easy to use. As with all manual focus fisheyes, it's challenging to focus, so you're better off guessing the focal range, and stopping down a bit if necessary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Landscape Lens for Nikon I use this lens with my Nikon D810. The results are wonderfull images, very sharp and colorfull. I recomend for landscape photography. I have a Nikon Lens 16-35mm but now I use for outdoors just this incredible lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Stellar Lens for Astrophotography This lens has had many favorable reviews and a few negative reviews. Initially I was reluctant to make this purchase because of the negative reviews. But on the advice of some astrophotography and landscape photography professionalls I did purchase this lens. It arrived on a Friday; the following night found me on a prairie with the darkest skies withing a hours drive photographing the milky way. It was easy to manually focus the lens down such the stars were indeed nearly pin points. Much better than I had been able to do with any of my Nikon lenses, even the 50mm f/1.4. (I think it's unrealistic to expect that sharp a focus with a zoom lens so no criticism of my Nikon glass intended.) My photos were very good and I didn't see any chromatic aberration. It's a fisheye lens so I'm not even going to talk about distortions a the corners. Really! I have no cons for this lens. I can't address how rugged it is of the strength of its construction. Time will give me a better sense of that. I'm glad I purchased this lens. If I have any regrets it's that I didn't buy it sooner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens blew away my expectations. I have been shooting concert photos for a few years now, and decided it was time to get a little fish eye to enhance my shots. I also shoot a lot of sunsets/nature, and this lens has delivered some very stunning results. I am beyond impressed with the clarity and look forward to many years with this lens. The FX format shows a huge improvement over the DX format of the Rokinon Fish Eye that my friend has.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good wide angle lens I purchased this lens for it's 180* view. After witnessing the Rokinon 12mm f2.8 on a friends camera during a Milky Way shooting tutorial I decided to try it for myself. I have only used it once, but I have noticed a slight increase in contrast, minor vignetting, and a small decrease in light transmission compared with my 21mm Zeiss Milvus lens. There is also a slight notice in sharpness. However, do not be discouraged as this lens performs well enough for gov work! So, I wouldn't get my knickers in a twist over the fact that this lens doesn't exceed a Zeiss, the quality is sufficient for most work in digital online content.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great ! I bought this to use on my Nikon D7000 as an ultra wide angle and later on full frame as a fisheye. This works very well on the D7000 with full metering and automatic aperture stop down. Much to my surprise , with a wide open aperture there is almost no discernable vignetting. The image sharpness in the corners is also fairly good.
