Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The 12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC Fisheye Lens for Sony E Mount from Rokinon provides a 180° diagonal angle of view on full-frame cameras for an ultra-wide angle, distorted perspective that is useful for architectural interiors, landscapes and creative experimentation in any photographic application. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light situations and enables some measure of shallow depth of field control.

The lens' sophisticated optical design consists of 12 lens elements arranged in 8 groups including three elements made of low dispersion ED glass and two aspherical lens elements to minimize coma and chromatic aberrations. Highly effective nanocrystal anti-reflection (NCS) coating applied together with UMC coatings improve light transmission and reduce ghosting. Its internal focus system enables its compact design and keeps the front element from extending during focus.

As a manual focus, manual aperture lens, it offers a wide, easy to grip focus ring and bright aperture, distance and depth of field markings. A removable petal-shaped lens hood is included.

An ultra wide-angle fisheye lens with a 12mm focal length on full-frame cameras and an 18mm equivalency when used on APS-C format cameras. Its distorted perspective is useful for interiors, landscapes, group shots and many creative wide-angle applications.
Extra low dispersion and aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations for sharp, color-accurate imaging.
Nano crystal coating and ultra multi-coating on the lens elements improves light transmission and reduces ghosting and flare.
Manual focus lens with an internal focus system and wide, rubberized focus ring.
Manual aperture control with bright markings for aperture, distance and depth of field.
Sturdy metal barrel with removable petal-shaped lens hood.

    Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 reviews

12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC Fisheye Lens for Sony E Mount is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it so far Only used this for one afternoon at Lake Tahoe with some friends, so not the best opportunity to shoot but it is a wonderful location that lends itself to extremely wide field of view. Images seem very sharp and manual focus on a mirrorless A7II is not particularly hard given how wide it is with focus peeking and magnification. That cap is a little annoying to stash vs standard caps, but that is just how these types of lens are so no getting around that, just something to be aware of. Love the fisheye effect for some types of shots, defish for others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic value and superb optics This is not the first fisheye I have owned and used. I have owned the Sigma 15mm fisheye in the past. This Rokinon actually has a slightly wider view than the Sigma. Optically it is far superior to the Sigma which sells for about $ more. Specifically it is much better in sharpness in the corners, a bit less barrel distortion and much less chromatic aberration (magenta-green fringing). I shoot primarily manual in all of my photography and use fisheyes for both street photography and landscape. With the extreme depth of field of this lens autofocus is superfluous. When I shoot street images I set the focus distance at about 4 feet and usually f/8. I then can use aperture priority and have the camera select a shutter speed or I use manual mode. I adjust the ISO up until I get a shutter speed of at least 1/30th second and off I go shooting images of people in tight spaces without ever paying attention to focus or aperture/shutterspeed. The depth of focus scale on the barrel indicates that at a focus of 4 feet and aperture of f/8 the depth of field is fromeighteen inches to infinity. The only time when I use the viewfinder to focus this lens is shooting super close, i.e. less than one foot. If you don't want to push your ISO up to 400 or 800 then open up the lens to f4 and when focused at 4 feet you have a depth of field approximately from2 and 1/2 feet to about 30 feet. That certainly works for the street images. You want a near-far shot with mountains in the background and wildflowers up front then shoot at f/16 with the focus set at 1 and 1/2 feet and you get a depth of field from 10 inches to infinity!!! Some have criticized the lens cover and I think its fantastic. It can not be removed without pushing in on two flanges and on most other fisheyes the cover can slide off quite easily exposing those bulbous front lens elements to damage. Some criticize plastic in lenses such as found in the petal shaped hood and lens cover of this Rokinon. The reality is that modern resinous plastics are far superior in performance than metal. If you drop this lens the petal lens shade will not dent and it can never rust or corrode. You can squeeze on the petals and try to break it but you can not do so. Furthermore the transmission of forces from the lens shade to the barrel of the lens if dropped is damped by the plastic so from my point of view the modern plastic petal shaped lens shade and the lens cover are superior to metal of any kind. And did I mention....this lens is sharp!!! When I took a selfie with it at 8 inches you could do a dermatologic exam on my face with the image, i.e. every hair of my 2nd day beard an every little skin imperfection. If you like night photography, i.e. the Milky Way this is a great focal length for that kind of imaging. In very low light indoor photography I can hand hold a fisheye lens such as this without perceptible camera motion with exposures as long as 0.2 seconds, that's right 1/5th second. You do however need a stationary subject for that long of an exposure. Get out on the dance floor in a nightclub with this camera and with the depth of field and perspective some fabulous things are in the offing for this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Sharp. I wanted to use this lens for astrophotography but i have to say its going to be used for many other things as well. Works beautifully on my a7s. Increadably sharp. It's going to stay in my bag permanently. Did I mention it's SHARP !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great Rokinon I own a number of Rokinon lens from my Sony a7rII. If you can live with manual focus, and don't thrash your equipment, they are wonderful lens. The 12mm Fisheye is no exception, sharp wide open, great color and contrast, and a value to boot! I have been using it mainly for landscapes and love the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great lens! This lens works perfectly on my sony a7s, full 180 view, no vignetting, and the perfect amount of barrel distortion expected from a fisheye.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazingly sturdy lens This lens is an absolute joy to shoot with. It has far exceeded my expectations for astro, landscape, and macro usage. Paired with the fisheye-hemi plugin for Photoshop, this lens is a killer deal. My only complaint (very minimal) is that the lens does not pass EXIF data to the camera, so you will need to remember your aperture settings if you wish to manually populate it later.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Its Wide Seems like a great lens, though I did return it. I tried it out for a week and found I wasn't real happy with the wide angle pics I was getting. I don't think I'm going to be doing any wide angle more than 16mm. Entirely a personal preference. I have a friend who uses this lens and loves it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Stunning I bought this to go with my Sony A7II camera, and I absolutely love it. Produces sharp images with beautiful colors, good size for printing. I can't wait to take this to Disney World this December! Lens is nice and lightweight, which I really appreciate.
