Bolt VS-260 Reviews

Uneven Light Output/Falloff

Purchased the Bolt VS-260F to use with my X100S as a walk around flash to replace my dead Fujifilm EF-X20. The flash is made well for the price with a minimalist design. However, the light output is uneven with a dark band of underexposed area covering the lower 1/3 of the frame. The falloff is about 2/3 to 1 stop. Too much for me, so it will be returned to B&H. Also, despite the advertised very short flash duration, it will not sync at 1/4000 sec. I tried this flash with my X-E2 with a 27mm and a 60mm lens. With the 27mm, there is still a slight falloff visible. The 60mm shows no falloff. Another thing to consider with this flash is that the end of the flash head will tilt up but not down. With the close focusing ability of the X100S, it's to bad that the head will not tilt down for semi-macro work : (

Be careful of compatibility.

I got this to attempt to fill the gap between the smallest Fuji flash for the X-T1 (the one that comes with the body) and the EF-42 which does the job for me, but is a bit too large to carry in a small bag with the camera. The Bolt flash fits the size requirement and the output is approximately mid-way between the two Fuji flashes, but the verdict is still out on its ability to provide sufficient fill flash at a distance in bright sunlight given the restrictions on shutter speed imposed by the body. A benefit of the slightly larger size is the flash is further above the lens than the smaller units so there is less danger of shadowing from the lens or its shade. However, there are several concerns 1) The unit simply doesn't work with my X-PRO(the flash fires, but the body wasn't aware of the flash so it is easy to leave the shutter speed set too high and of course there is no exposure control), despite the claim to be compatible with all Fuji X models. It does work as advertised with the X-T1 and X-T10. 2) It should be regarded as a disposable unit given the flimsy locking mechanism for attachment to a hotshoe. That's OK given the price, but be forewarned. I don't have enough experience with it yet to have a problem with a failure, but it feels like one waiting to happen. 3) Recycle time is a bit long for the full exposures needed as fill in sunlight. Perhaps metallic lithium batteries will minimize this problem, but that's an issue on long trips if the batteries aren't interchangeable (I use rechargeable AA's for everything else).

No, for the Leica cameras you will need either a manual flash with a single center pin or Nikon TTL compatible, since Leica is using Nikon system.

Asked by: Francisco
The Bolt VS-260F Compact On-Camera Flash for Fujifilm Cameras works with most Fujifilm cameras including the X-t3 and the X-t20. There is a compatibility tab on the product page that lists all of the cameras that are compatible.
