Zoom iQ7 Overview

  • 1Description

The iQ7 from Zoom is a compact mid-side stereo condenser microphone for Lightning-equipped iOS devices. It allows for up to 48 kHz/16-bit, mono-compatible audio tracking and is ideal for recording live concerts, ENG, videos and more.

The iQ7 features a rotating capsule that enables it to be used vertically or horizontally with your iOS device. This allows you to record video with your device situated in either standard or landscape positions while ensuring that the audio is recorded with the correct left-right stereo orientation.

The mic contains two elements including a directional "mid" mic that captures audio coming from the front, and a bidirectional "side" mic that picks up ambient sounds from the sides. The stereo width can be set to either 90° or 120°, or you can record the mid and side mic signals as raw data and use Zoom's Handy Recorder iOS app to adjust the stereo width after the fact. The app also allows you to collapse the signal into phase-coherent mono, ideal for voice recordings such as interviews.

The input gain can be adjusted using the large, mic gain wheel on the front of the unit, while you monitor your levels using the 3-segment LED. The iQ7 also features a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack, enabling direct monitoring during both recording and playback. The headphone output can also be used as a line out for making a backup recording if desired.

The iQ7 comes with a removable spacer that allows it to be used with most iPhone, iPad, and iPod cases. The mic is compatible with Zoom's free Handy Recorder app, which gives you the option to record as PCM or AAC files, and offers effects such as compression, EQ, and reverb. Additionally, it will work with Apple's Voice Memo app and GarageBand, as well as most apps that support input from an external microphone.

Zoom Handy Recorder App
Zoom's free Handy Recorder app, available from the iTunes App Store, adds a wealth of audio tools to your iOS device. Overdub to the stereo recordings created with your iQ7. Perform fine editing functions in its waveform display. Save your files in either linear PCM or AAC file formats. Apply onboard effects such as compression, EQ and reverb to further enhance the sound. Handy Recorder even allows you to email the audio you create and to upload it to SoundCloud for sharing with the world

    Zoom iQ7 Reviews

iQ7 Mid-Side Stereo Microphone for iOS Devices with Lightning Connector is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally- a terrific iOS microphone Husband has worked as a singer-songwriter and studio engineer, and has been looking hard for two years for a portable mike to take on the road, or just for capturing early bits of songs wherever he likes. This great little device from Zoom looked like it might finally fit his standards/expectations. It has not disappointed!! It is very clear, and very detailed in its recording. Download the app and test it out; on raw recording in the living room, it beat garageband hands down. This device hasn't made it into the studio yet, but record/playback on iPhone 6+ was sharp and nuanced. Stays on while plugged into iOS device, so disconnect to save device battery. Husband is SUPER happy with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I'm impressed. The sound quality that this device deliver is neat. Definitely better than regular IPhone mic , however if your ears are used to the crisp sound of a well equipped studio recording you will notice a marginal difference in quality. Non the less , it went beyond my expectation in terms of sound quality. it records in all directions except except one. It would have been more gadgety if it recorded in all direction. I use this device to record meetings discussions so that I can later write the minutes of meeting down on paper. I also use this device to record my simultaneous interpretation from English to Arabic and vice versa so that I can later evaluate of performance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enhanced Sound Recording I am a language teacher and I use the IQ7 as an audio recorder to record voice mainly and as a mic for video when filming with iPhone 6S Plus. It gives a very clear voice recording when held about 2 feet from the speaker. It captures ambient sound much better than the iPhone built-in mic when shooting video. Voice from 15 to 20 feet away in a quiet room still comes out clear and loud enough for intelligible sound. It looks a bit fragile and must be handled with care; It would be easy to rip the heads of the body of the mic, so some kind of case is essential for transport.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Apps are important for iQ7 Mic for iOS As of this writing there are two field recording external microphones for iPhones that utilize the Lightning connector. Zoom iQ7 and the RODE iXY. Essential to the use of the microphones are two apps available through the Apple store. RODE Rec sells for $5.99 and the ZOOM Handy Rec is free. Both apps will work just fine with the built-in microphone in the iPhone and both apps are interchangeable for either the ZOOM iQ7 or the RODE iXY. The ZOOM iQ7 costs about one half the list price for the RODE iXY. I bought the ZOOM iQ7 and am very happy with it. I don't have any way to compare the two directly. The RODE iXY may well be worth the additional cost but I suggest that any potential buyers compare the specs of the two units. I am using the RODE Rec recording app with the ZOOM iQ7 and find it far superior in terms of flexibility. I suspect that both of these apps are just a little past beta testing and there could be improvements in future upgrades. The cost of RODE Rec is nominal in my view and I would recommend anyone interested in these accessory microphones to try both apps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy mic with great audio options I use this mic in two ways. 1. for better audio recording on interviews and 2. for better audio with my video. The mic is wonderful for both. I definitely recommend playing around with it before you go out to use it professionally. It's got a bit of a learning curve but packs a mighty punch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality audio recording I use the iQ7 for videos and audio only recording. It does an exceptional job in both respects compared to the built in mic on my iPad Air. The only complaint that I have is actually with Apple rather than Zoom in that the lightning connector is the weak link between the iPad and external hardware. You really need to be careful how you handle the device when the mic is connected.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Commensurate with iPhone video quality I just used this to shoot a 4-day music festival, mainly for social media and internal use. Music ranged from quiet ballads and instrumentals to a 40-piece orchestra and chorus. I also recorded backstage interviews. I am pleased with the clean results, and the 90-degree setting does a nice job of isolation. However, monitoring the iQ7 proved difficult. The mic's headphone jack doesn't work in video mode. And the LED peak meter and level dial are all but unusable when shooting, noisy as touching the mic is. That is impossible not to do when the mic is plugged directly into the phone and just next to the home button. The mic did not fit with my slim-ish Spigen phone case on, anyway, even with spacer removed. So I jury-rigged an Imorden GH-02 hand grip to mount the mic remotely. I highly recommend this particular grip and remote mic mounting generally. You'll avoid touching the mic and also relieve much of the stress on the phone jack. Despite audio for video shortcomings, I would say this mic is a good choice with sound quality commensurate with iPhone video. So more like 4.5 stars here.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Initial use - out of the box I used this for my Toastmasters club to record speeches.  I had to turn my audio up to max on my PC to hear the recording.  It may just be that I have some learning and experimenting to do to reap the benefits of an external mic for an iPhoneX.  I plan on using it for recording podcasts in the near future.

can the iphone have case when connected?

can the iphone have case when connected?
    Asked by: Hongda
This will depend on the specific make and model of case you are using. However, the iQ7 can be attached to most phones with cases by removing the black spacer around the iQ7's lightning connector.

Does this device work with the 8plus? Could this device be rewired to accept a stereo ear mic?
    Asked by: Robert R.
The Zoom iQ7 will work with the iPhone 8 plus but will not accept an external microphone. The 1/8 connection on the side is an output jack for headphone monitoring.

When I plug my IQ7 into my iPhone 6+, the red light starts blinking. I know this means my device isnt recognizing the mic, but what can I do to fix it?
    Asked by: Anonymous
I haven't had this happen to me, but I have had my computer not recognize my iPhone when plugging the usb cable in and it was due to pocket lint buildup in the lightning port. It's possible that could be your issue here too. They actually make a little tool specifically for cleaning it out, because its a pretty common problem.
