Sky-Watcher S20510 overview

  • 1Description

Sky-Watcher's Star Adventurer Motorized Mount Astro Package is an easy-to-use equatorial mount that offers accurate tracking capabilities for astronomy and astrophotography. With a simple turn of a dial, select from Lunar, Solar, or Star tracking modes, or four speeds from 0.5x to 12x if the modes are not exactly right. An integrated polar alignment scope with an included illuminator help the alignment process in either the Northern or Southern Hemispheres, and a date dial compensates for star drift over time to extend the usability of the scope.

In addition to standard stargazing or astrophotography, the mount is also ideally suited for star-scape photos and has a time-lapse mode. A 2.5mm three-segment stereo jack is integrated into the mount and gives the mount the ability to control a compatible DSLR's shutter release for long-exposure or time-lapse photography. Pre-programmed intervals, based on the tracking mode selected, optimize the exposure times for the subjects selected.

The Star Adventurer mount features a Vixen-style dovetail saddle for compatible accessories and optical tube assemblies (OTAs). It has both 3.8"-16 and 1/4"-20 tripod mounts to fit on most astronomical, photo, or video tripods and is offered here without a tripod, OTA, or counterweights.

    Sky-Watcher S20510 reviews

Star Adventurer Motorized Mount Astro Package is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Star Adventurer - Performs as expected I bought this so I can use it during the 2017 total eclipse and meteor showers without having to drag out my bigger mounts. This unit performs as expected and with a 400mm Canon lens on it, it tracked very well at 4 minute exposures. Way more time than needed during totality. I was shooting the other night at 30 sec exposures and 60 frames and other then focusing issues the mount did a good job. I opted for this model vs the competition because this will hold 11 lbs of gear while the other was 6 lbs. With the weight bar really nice. I recommend the equatorial wedge accessory as it makes polar alignment much easier.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a good experience Assembling the product is when I found out the ball head adapter for PHOTOGRAPHY was not included. Had to go back and search more than one page to find where the adapter was even shown on the website. Since I wanted the product for the moon eclipse, I had to use one day shipping, which cost me more than the price of the adapter. Then to find out the adapter does not have holding screws to keep the ball head from rotating under pressure. (Camera with lens rotates) The instruction manual is poorly written, so if you buy this product, make sure you allow enough time to work through your frustrations before you miss an important photo opportunity.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok for light loads For widefield or short exposures with longer lenses this unit is adequate. If you are hoping to shoot 300mm+ for more than 30 seconds the quality of the tracking degrades dramatically. 300mm at 60 to 90 seconds has a keeper rate of less than 50%. Anything longer is totally unusable. The unit is rated for 12 pounds, however for long exposure photography I would put the rating at 1/3 of that. For widefield work I think you would be very happy, but for deep sky objects investing in a higher quality mount should be considered. While the price of this unit is very attractive, it should be noted that you get what you pay for. The construction of the unit is of low quality, machining of dovetails is very poor, the polar scope is cumbersome, etc... With patience, Deep sky objects are attainable (see image attached), but much of the dark sky time is lost due to poor tracking with longer focal lengths.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tracking I purchased this to take longer duration exposures of nightscapes. I has been running into star trails on anything over 20 sec exposures. The Star Adventurer allowed me to use a 300MM lens to take a good photo of the Orion Nebula. I had trouble with polar alignment at first, but had to get a clear view of Polaris. This mount is easy to use. I look forward to more evenings with this mount. This mounted easily to my existing tripod.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very flexable tracking unit I have used it for AstroPhotography and time Lapse and have had generally good result.. As any unit of this type setting up on Polaris is so important and there are programs and apps that are easy to use. I found in requesting answers from the mfg via email, was a waste of time, no reply to my questions, so figured it out myself with the internet programs to find the best way to find Polaris. BUT, after that it tracked very well and easily handled a 5DmkII/400mm lens. I think the tracking errors were to do with spotting Polaris in the correct place on the circle in the Poler Scope. What would I do differently? give the degrees of movement for each speed. 12X is not fast enought to correct your target quickly, one fast speed for panning video. and make the slot in the mounting bracket large enough in at least one location to use the red light for the polar scope while the camera load is attached to the mount. I still give it a high score, stongest one available.. I had good results , 120sec @ 200mm 60sec @ 14mm perfect, 240 Sec @ 400mm not as good as should be, more practice on the scope!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Watch the weight capacity The Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer is a reliable and very good value for money equipment. I use it with a 5d MK III with battery grip and the canon EF 135 mm f2.0 lens and have had no problems tracking for approximately 1 min 50 sec with no noticeable deterioration. in tracking. total combined weight of mounted kit is around 2.4Kg. With the EF 300 f2.8 where the combined weight is around 3.9 kg you can hear the unit struggling although tracking still appears to be ok. Overall I think it is good, reliable and extremely portable unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy purchase - works very well. I am very happy with this mount in combination with the associated wedge. Lightweight and easy to set up and align on a Manfrotto tripod, I am able to get 1.5 minute exposures with a Canon ASP-C and 200 mm lens - nice round stars. Post processing is not going so well yet, but with this package, at least I am able to capture good raw images

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful Device Easy to polar align, I've used this with up to 400mm focal length lenses with up to 40 second tracking with excellent results. Very compact, easy to travel with, and it just performs!
