    Oben GH-50 Reviews

GH-50 Gimbal Head is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from First Time Using A Gimbal I showed up to shoot an eagles nest with the new Nikon D5 and 600 f/4 so it was finally time to break out this gimbal that I had planned to use for baseball this year. It was easy to set up, balance, and attach to my tripod. My friend had a Wemberly with him and I asked what he thought since I had no real point of reference. I was impressed with the Oben but wanted to know if that was just my own stupidity. He was very impressed - when I told him the price he was VERY impressed. Using it was simple and it does what it is supposed to do. i would have given this 4.5 if half stars were allowed simply because it was a bit difficult to aim really high but I have no idea if a wemberly or other product could go up really high more easily....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Steady Freddy Like most of you reading this, I was unsure about a gimbal at this price point when all the others seem much higher. I use it for all the normal things that long lensers use them for, birding, wildlife etc etc. This gimbal is perfect. The included arca type plate is solid and every bit of this thing just feels and works solidly. I dare say, a product like this could force the other higher end gimbal makers to come down in price as it is that good. I cannot say what it will be like after 10 years of use - but for now, after days of using it, I can solidly give it 5 stars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed First time I've ever been disappointed in a B&H purchase. Have a Wimberly gimbal that I use with a Canon 400mm, but wanted to purchase something similar to use with a spotting scope and was attracted by the less expensive price tag. Reviews were positive so I thought I'd give it a try. Would not recommend this product at all - adjustment not smooth, hold is not stable, and overall quality (at least compared to the Wimberly)is substandard. Get what you pay for? Though I believe it is still overpriced for what you get. Splurge for the Wimberly if you want a solid, reliable product. Have had my Wimberly for over 5 years and have used it in rugged and unfavorable conditions, but have never been disappointed in performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Gimbal I am a prof photographer and i have to admit i am very impressed with Oben Gimbal head. very sturdy, seamless movement, very good overall construction. Easy to install and operate. i have mounted 300mm on it and tested. It's performance is impressive. very good alternative to Wimberley's and costs less.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good solid unit, reasonably priced, difficult at high angle I purchased the Oben GH-50 Gimbal Head and tried it. It is well made, very sturdy and impressive. Butit had a difficult time tracking birds at a high angles (greater than 65 - 70 degrees). The GH-50 worked flawlessly rotating left-to-right and up and down until you got to high angles. At the lower angles it only required 1 finger to move the lens; again impressive. At the high angles this low force requirement was no longer the case and I was very uncomfortable applying the type of force required to move the lens at these high angles. I then ordered and tested side by side the Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head. I now know why the Wimberley is the gold standard. I own a Sigma 150 600 Sport and find it too heavy for hand-held photos. I feel a heavy lens like this should be supported with a strong tripod head, and a gimbal head would be ideal. I'm a Photo Enthusiast not a professional (note the telephoto zoom and not 600 or 800 prime lens); and was willing to exceed my budget and get the Oben. But now having tried the GH-50 and not finding it fully satisfactory I went with the Wimberley. I should not be spending this type of money on a tripod headbut figure this is a once in a lifetime purchase and I'm unwilling to spend $ on something I'm not fully happy with. The extra $ allowed me to reach that. I wonder if my GH-50 unit was defective, as I feel it should have performed better than it did. All and all the GH-50 is goodjust not good enough for that amount of money.ProsPriceSturdy / QualityEase to install, set-up and balanceConsUse at high angles

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it! Great build, strong, smooth, indexing marks Precise, clean, no slop. Tilt and pan motion both feel viscous; the faster you try to change tilt or pan, the harder it resists, like a video head, but not much. A luxurious, effortless, and confidence-inspiring feel with a Nikon D7200 and Tamron 150-600mm mounted. Lock knobs turn less than a quarter turn from full lock to full free; max rotation less than a half turn. Setup and balance: With pan locked, attachment to tripod is positive, tight. Assembly of mounting stage to tilt arm is trivial and precise. Mount point is far enough from vertical support to accomodate a balanced Tamron 150-600mm mounted on a Nikon D7200 with all lens and camera controls accesible and plenty of room to spare. IMO, any lens costing less than $2000, should be no problem. If the gimbal is positioned with the vertical support on the right, open on the left, lens controls for any mountable lens are unobstructed. Vertical position adjustment of mount point is more than enough to balance for vertical center of gravity for any attached dSLR with added battery grip or not. Simply put, this Oben head is an unexpected pleasure to use, especially considering it's more than $100 less than the top brand names. My pictures are already better. I pay attention to the subject. The equipment almost disappears. Disclaimer: I have no vested interest, financial or otherwise in either Oben or B&H, but I highly recomend either based on my experience.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for the big lens Bought this gimbal head after considering several others and decided to give it a try. I give it a 4 star only because the first one I purchased had a defective quick release plate. Not a problem with B&H. The head is perfect for the Sigma 150-600mm I also got from B&H. Together, Head and the lens work smoothly and effortlessly. All in all, I think Oben makes find photo gear. Their tripods are also very well made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rock Solid The quality of this gimbal is superb! I was tempted to by another less expensive brand, but I'm glad I didn't. You'll know you made the right choice the moment you take it out of the box.
