Fstoppers FLASHDISC overview

  • 1Description

For soft lighting while on-the-go you can easily take the Flash Disc Portable Speedlight Softbox from Fstoppers. The softbox measures about 12" in diameter and uses silver lining in order to more efficiently direct light. It works with most shoe-mounted flash units and uses an elastic band on the base to hold it secure. Also, it has a patch on the face that will prevent hot spots from the speedlight.

For additional functionality while shooting, the reverse side of the Flash Dish features a gray card with white, 18% gray and black panels for simpler color correction in post. And, for convenience, it folds down to about 4" and packs into an included carrying case.

    Fstoppers FLASHDISC reviews

Flash Disc Portable Speedlight Softbox is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have This flash disc is one of the best things I bought, it's super easy to use and the results are amazing! Pros: Has two sides for either a graduated filter on the back and on the front, it has a normal diffusing light. Cons: Basically no cons at all I have to get used to the system on how it holds onto the flash, I'm using the Yongnuo flash and the way that it holds onto it is a flexible grip that wraps around it tightly, the issue is that it's hard to get on the flash quickly but for studio use it's fairly easy. Also since it's very lightweight the wind can take it right off. Overall I give this a 5 star rating due to its build quality and performance quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT Product!!! I have several other portable / small soft box units. But THIS one outdoes all the others. I was a little if-ee about the price point - and I still think it's just a wee bit high. But after buying my first one of these, I'll easily suck up the price. The light dispersion is very noticeably better than my other units (which are of good quality etc...). The portability - folding it up like a reflector into a 4-5 inch case that fits in any camera bag is wonderful. At times I now use these on my wireless speed lights on a stand provided I don't NEED the larger size / full size soft boxes and I get unbelievable results!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Handy for special needs I shoot model homes and sometimes have a need to place a flash in a tight area, like behind a kitchen island, or I want a diffused light coming from a really low position, but in a tight space. In the past I used my smallest umbrella with the light stand laying on the floor. But that didn't work all the well and it was a little rough on the umbrella. Thus when I spotted this mini-softbox I wanted to give it a try. It has filled my need pretty well. I just slip my flash into the opening. It diffuses the light, but just barely, due to it's small size. It is only 12 across. But for what it is supposed to do, and what I bought it for, I'm happy with my purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great product horrible price. This softbox is great, does it's job and quite durable. Fantastic for people who can't set up an umbrella. I ordered it as I am on the Fstoppers site almost every day and I like the results they got with this product. What I did not like at all was the price. $50 for something like this is way overpriced. After ordering it, I found the exact same item(minus the Fstoppers logos) $ So I guess I am paying $$for a logo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flexible and compact. I found this product to be handy on the go. I recently folded it and was able to put it in one coat pocket and my flash in the other while my camera was on my neck and I carried a monopod. We hiked through the tree farm for about a half hour searching for a tree. When we finally found one It was dusk and needed the extra light. Hubby held the flash set up on the monopod with the flash disk using Nikon's CLS. It worked out well for us to have the extra light and it provided a softer light than the flash alone. I will not replace a beauty dish, but so very portable and useful for the price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I don't get it?! Poorly made and harsh lighting. Cannon 6D, 24-105 mm, f.4, Canon 600ex-rt flash set on ETTL I returned the Flash Disc Portable Speedlight Softbox after 20 exposures that were not that much better than using direct flash. I was hoping to see a 20% - 40% improvement and softer light. I guess you need to be really close to your subject, or the unit is good for small product photography, where the softbox is on top of the subject. The Gary Fong light modifier seems to work much better (far from perfect) in low light situations, where bouncing is not an option. The cost is very high for what it is. I know there's research and development built into the cost, but this has to cost under $7 to make. Thanks to B&H for allowing me to return the unit. Not worth $50, maybe $20, but it's still throws harsh light at normal portrait distances.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I've been looking for I've been struggling to find a light modifier for my in-the-field reptile photography. It had to be fairly small, easy to set-up, easy to carry in a backpack, durable, and soften the shadows from my Canon Speedlite flash. I've tried and used a number of small softboxes, flash add-ons, reflectors, and so on looking for what suits my needs and requirements. They were either difficult to set up, would fall apart under the workload of field use, or would not soften the shadows any more than my Sto-fen Omnibounce would. This item fills them all. The shadows are so smooth and the light is very even. It sets up very easily and quickly, and then breaks down even faster. I photograph a lot of rattlesnakes at night, so having a flash modifier that does just what I want it to do, and without a lot of fiddling and distracting me, is very important. The only 'con' I have with it, and it's minimal, is that it does not expand fully when mounted on the flash. I've had to cut three plastic pieces from a ball point pen to hold the modifier open in its full position. The pieces are small enough to fit into the case and only take about 15 seconds to put on when needed. I used the Flash Disc Portable Speedlite exclusively on a recent trip to Arizona to photograph reptiles during the monsoon season. I was blown away by how well it worked for me after the very first snake I shot with it. It is now my only choice when photographing reptiles and amphibians in the field.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Could be a 10 but still a good buy Like all things the Flash Disc has good points and bad but overall it's something you should get if you use a speedlight. It isn't terribly overpriced but if it was $ or more cheaper it would make sense to buy two of them. The quality of the light is pretty good for a compact gadget you can even put in your pocket if you have cargo pants. It works well but it would be better if they reduced the open space where the speedlight goes, used fabric that prevented light from coming out the side panel and put a small piece of plastic at the top of the disc to keep the two sides separated. I cut an old credit card in half and wedged in the top and it's a big improvement. I have a few other modifiers that I don't even bother to bring along anymore since I got this.
