3DR X8+ Overview

Use the X8+ Octocopter from 3D Robotics to capture aerial video from a compact camera such as a GoPro (available separately). This version of the octocopter comes in a ready-to-fly (RTF) bundle, meaning a transmitter (radio controller), flight battery, and battery charger are all included and that no major assembly is required. With a 1.7 pound payload, the X8+ provides up to 15 minutes flying time.

To provide the autonomy the complexity of a multi-rotor requires, the X8+ features 3D Robotic's Pixhawk flight control system. This programmable system uses GPS and other data to provide varying degrees of autopilot redundancy, from full autopilot using the Ground Station to near manual. The Ground Station 433 MHz telemetry link is included so that you can update auto pilot courses in-flight, and view flight stats from a computer or Android mobile device. A USB cable and and Android OTG (On the Go) cable are included for connecting the ground-end module.

Note: This version of the X8+ features a 433 MHz telemetry radio for use in Europe. Aircraft used in the U.S. will require the 915 MHz radio instead. Users from other regions should consult local regulations to ensure compliance before purchasing.

Pixhawk Autopilot System
Based on technilogy desiged for the PX4 open-hardware project and with ST Microelectronics sensors and a NuttX real-time operating system, Pixhawk provides the computerized brains that give the Aero-M its autonomy. The software it uses provides a Unix/Linux-like programming environment, and offers support for a range of autopilot functions such as Lua scripting of missions and flight behavior. Notable features include:
  • A 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 processor running NuttX RTOS
  • 14 PWM/servo outputs; 8 with failsafe and manual override, 6 auxiliary, high-power compatible
  • Abundant connectivity options for additional peripherals (UART, I2C, CAN)
  • Integrated backup system for in-flight recovery and manual override with dedicated processor and stand-alone power supply
  • Backup system integrates mixing, providing consistent autopilot and manual override mixing modes
  • Redundant power supply inputs and automatic failover
  • External safety button for easy motor activation
  • Multicolor LED indicator
  • Multi-tone piezo audio indicator
Support for Aerial Photography
Compatible with Tarot T-2D Gimbal for GoPro
The X8+ Octocopter comes ready for Tarot T-2D gimbal installation (gimbal available separately). The two-axis gimbal will hold the GoPro HERO3 camera and serves to stabilize the image against motor-incurred vibration as well as keep the horizon of your shots level

Note: There are two version of the Tarot T-2D gimbal, one for the IRIS/IRIS+ and one for the 2014 Quad, Y6, and X8/X8+. Be sure to use the later version as this includes the require mounting bracket for the X8+
3DR Telemetry Radio
The included 3DR telemetry radio features two transceiver units - one for the air end and one for the ground end - that allow the flight computer to communicate with an Android tablet that supports OTG (on the go) USB device hosting. Using the app you can view flight data in real time, update settings, and access the Auto Mission Planning feature

In addition to the two radios, the system includes an Android OTG USB cable, a standard USB cable for connecting to a computer, and communication cables required to connect the air end transceiver to the flight controller
