Roland TR-8 overview

  • 1Description

The AIRA TR-8 Rhythm Performer from Roland combines the legendary sound, form, and function of the vintage TR-808 and TR-909 rhythm machines with cutting-edge performance and live pattern manipulation capabilities to create a modern-day classic well-suited for stage or studio. Roland developed the "Analog Circuit Behavior" (ACB) technology, which faithfully recreates the tonality and behavior of true-analog circuits. With ACB, every detail of these original machines is captured, including the variations in tone that occur when multiple instruments are entered in accented steps.

The TR-8 features 16 kits made up of 11 instruments spanning both the 808 and 909 sound set, and each sound has dedicated tone controls such as level, tune, decay, and more. The sounds can be step recorded or recorded in real-time to a 16-step sequencer with A/B pattern variations. Additional pattern variations are available through 4 roll types (8th, 16th, VARI 1, VARI 2) and the scatter function, which can reverse, glitch, gate, truncate, and stutter sounds in perfect synchronization.

The TR-8 features built-in delay and reverb effects, each offering the ability to be programmed into the sequencer per step. Additionally, the external input allows audio to pass through the TR-8 with the ability to sequence side-chain and gate effects. The USB port connects the TR-8 to a computer, offering both MIDI and audio capabilities, as well as saving and loading of kits and patterns. The TR-8 ships with an AC power adapter.

    Roland TR-8 reviews

AIRA TR-8 Rhythm Performer is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from The new rhythmic overlord to my setup This is a wonderful device combining the best of the early machines with new technology that updates it for the 21st century and gives it greater versatility and outstanding sound quality. I've found it great for bangin' techno and dubbed out down-tempo alike. My only issues are: 1) You can't route the Audio In through the delay or reverb, and 2) it appears Roland is eager to sell us expansion packs but we can't simply load our own sounds on it like a sampler. At least, not yet. All it would take is new firmware. Or perhaps gasp a hack.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sounds good but limited Tought to beat for realistic TR808/909 sounds, but crippled by poor design decicions. One problem is the lack of footswitch or MIDI control for changing patterns in real time. Another is extrememly limited storage capacity for patterns/kits. I get that it's supposed to do only one thing well, but some additional sounds woudn't hurt either. I'd only recommend this to purists looking for old school capability to go along with the old school sounds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Latest Firmware is Life Changing! You know what it was... Now it can control external gear. It also has the ability to send 44.1, and 48 khz signals over usb in addition to the (slow computer crippling) 96K supported originally. I would say that it's finally complete! Supports both vintage and precise timing, great sounding and has wonderful real-time controllability. I don't think the new TR-08 beats it. I would add that the controls are big enough for a grown-up to drive it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 Classics under 1 hood, who could ask for more. Purchased this drum machine for a number of reasons; First: 2 drum machines in 1, TR-808 & TR-909. Second: I needed a stand alone drum machine. Third: reasonable price. Fourth: the on board effects and features are awesome!
