  • 1Description

This AX103S Refractor Telescope bundle from Vixen Optics includes four main components, a telescope, a tripod, a mount, and an electronic hand controller. These items are combined to create a capable and user-friendly rig for celestial object viewing.

The AX103S Refractor Telescope is an apochromatic f/8.0 refractor with a focal length of 825mm, an aperture of 103mm, and a Quad Element Design. Its three-element objective is complemented by a central fourth lens made from "Super Low Dispersion" glass. This optical design helps reduce chromatic aberration while delivering high-contrast imagery. Precision Multi-Coating is applied to the lenses in order to enhance light transmission and reduce internal reflections that could otherwise reduce overall image quality. A rear field corrector lens is also installed to help further ensure a crisp, high-contrast field of view that is virtually free of false color.

The AX103S weighs 10.0 lb and is fitted with 115mm mounting rings. A dovetail plate is provided, as well as a carry handle. This bundle includes Vixen's 20mm SLV Series 1.25" Eyepiece, a 5mm SLV Series 1.25" Eyepiece, plus a flip mirror diagonal to enable accurate, visual framing and focusing for astrophotography. The flip mirror diagonal can be configured with one of the included eyepieces and a camera. On the AX103S, the 20mm eyepiece provides 41.25x magnification, while the 5mm eyepiece provides 165x magnification.

Vixen's Sphinx SXD2 Equatorial Mount provides a precise and stable motorized mount for long observation sessions, or long-exposure astrophotography. Dual stepper motors provide smooth and virtually vibration-free tracking that run at up to 250pps. Its full-circle brass wheel gear allows the mount to track over extremely long periods with little tracking error.

This Sphinx comes with the Star Book Ten (SB10) computerized hand controller that is loaded with a database of 272,342 celestial objects such as the Moon, Sun, and planets, plus astronomical catalogs including SAO, NGC, and Messier. The SB10 has a 5" 800x400 resolution LED backlit TFT LCD screen that displays star charts, maps, as well as menu options. To aid set-up, there is a built-in 6x20 polar alignment scope that is set inside the mount. It has an 8° wide angle field of view and an illuminated reticle. The Polaris guide scale, for use in the Northern hemisphere, is accurate through the year 2025. An Octant 4-star pattern is also set on the reticle for use in the Southern hemisphere.

The provided tripod on which to rest the telescope, mount, and hand controller is Vixen's HAL 130 tripod. Its adjustable height allows the user to set the position of the telescope to their liking for easy and comfortable viewing. The top of the tripod is powder-coated with a durable finish that resists chipping, flaking, and fading. The tripod is collapsible for convenient storage and portability.

Also included in this bundle is Vixen's 7x50 Illuminated Finderscope to aid in centering observed objects, and a half pillar which contributes approximately 8.0" of additional height to the mount. This pillar provides clearance when attaching a DSLR to the rear or the telescope, and increases comfort for taller observers as well.

  • Sphinx SXD2 Equatorial Mount with Star Book 10

Designed to handle larger optical tube assemblies and heavy imaging rigs, Vixen's Sphinx SXD2 Equatorial Mount provides a precise and stable motorized mount for long observation sessions, or long-exposure astrophotography. Dual stepper motors provide smooth and virtually vibration-free tracking that run at up to 250pps. Its full-circle brass wheel gear allows the mount to track over extremely long periods with little tracking error.

The Sphinx comes with the Star Book Ten (SB10) computerized hand controller that is loaded with a database of 272,342 celestial objects such as the Moon, Sun, and planets, plus astronomical catalogs including SAO, NGC, and Messier. The SB10 has a 5" 800x400 resolution LED backlit TFT LCD screen that displays star charts, maps, as well as menu options. The Polaris guide scale, for use in the Northern hemisphere, is accurate through the year 2025. An Octant 4-star pattern is also set on the reticle for use in the Southern hemisphere.

The Sphinx is offered here without an optical tube assembly, tripod, or pier.

The top of the tripod, where the mount attaches, is powder-coated for a durable finish that resists flaking and fading. The tripod is also collapsible for convenient storage and portability.

  • eSG Half Pillar

The eSG Half Pillar from Vixen Optics quickly adds over eight inches of height to Sphinx, SKYPOD, and GP series mounts, without any permanent modification. This extra height allows longer optical tube assemblies (OTA) to be used with these mounts, plus it can make viewing more comfortable.

  • 5mm SLV Series 1.25" Eyepiece

The 5mm SLV Series 1.25" Eyepiece from Vixen Optics features a 20mm eye relief with a twist-up eyecup for comfortable viewing with or without eyeglasses. Designed with seven elements in four groups, the fully multicoated optics minimizes light reflection for bright and sharp images. Its all-metal body has a 1.25" aluminum barrel, with an anti-roll rubberized grip.

  • 7x50 Illuminated Finderscope

Finderscopes are monoculars attached atop or aside of a telescope, with lower magnification and a wider viewing field to help hunt down the general neighborhood of the object of interest.

This 7x50 Illuminated Finderscope, like the entire lineup from Vixen, uses a bracket that attaches to a matching shoe on the telescope.  With its larger exit pupil, it is both brighter and wider of field than Vixen's 10x50mm version, though there will be devotees to both varietals because some observers prefer a bit more magnification.

Additionally, if you are an "experienced" enough observer to have a maximum pupil diameter of ~5.0mm, you will not observe any more brightness with the 7x50 than the 10x50.

This model features a floating illumination 'dot' in the center of its field of view, to help align the finderscope to the main scope.

Achromatic objective lens with Kellner-type eyepiece system
Internally illuminated dot helps alignment to main scope
  • Finder Bracket Shoe

Vixen Finder Bracket Shoe - Many telescopes have a quick release base (finder shoe) that is compatible with the finder brackets. This item provides a quick release base for the bracket.

  • 50mm SX Finder Bracket - Short

The Vixen 50mm Finder Bracket is intended to hold your telescope's view finder. It has three adjustment screws to manually fine tune the finder scope on the selected target. It only weighs 195 grams.

  • Tube Rings with 115mm Inner Diameter

Vixen Tube Rings and accessory mount rings clamp onto telescope tubes to provide mounting points for accessories and mount heads.   They are designated by their inside diameter.  Both types can be joined by dovetail tube plates on the bottom for attachment to Porta, GP-Series and SPHINX mounts.

Tube Rings are sold in pairs and have 1/4"-20 threaded tripod holes on the top and bottom.  The optional Tube Ring Accessory Plate (#AM-AD-3548, B&H code "VITRAP") fits across the top of the rings for additional mounting options and greater stability.

Accessory Mount Rings are sold singly and have a 1/4"-20 threaded hole on bottom and 1/4"-20 tripod screw on top.

    Weighs 0.77 lb (350 g)
  • Flip Mirror System

The Vixen Flip Mirror System has a conventional 1.25" eyepiece adapter in the vertical position, and a second straight-through attachment which lets you directly screw upon an SLR camera T-mount.  Also included in the package which adapts the straight-through path to 1.25", so that you can have an eyepiece on both sides or you can shoot perform eyepiece projection adapter with the #3931 SX Camera Adapter.

The flip mirror allows speedy switching between viewing from the vertical position or allowing the light to pass straight through the flip mirror to your SLR camera (with or without an eyepiece in the path) attached to the rear.  When using the flip mirror for photography, users commonly insert illuminated reticle eyepieces in the vertical position so they can periodically flip the mirror to check that the image isn't drifting during the exposure, and correct for such drift if necessary.

2" Focuser barrel accepts 49mm filters (use a 49mm to 48mm step-down ring to employ conventional astronomical 48mm filters)
Each output of flip mirror has 42mm T-mount threading for prime focus photography with SLR cameras (camera-specific T-mount adapter is required)
Add optional #3931 SX Camera Adapter to straight through path for eyepiece projection photography with SLR cameras (camera-specific T-mount adapter is required)
  • Metal Carry Handle

This Metal Carry Handle from Vixen Optics is an accessory handle for transporting, setting up and handling compatible refractor-style telescopes. Made of aluminum, it mounts on the tube ring using an included M6 bolt.

    Compatibility
    A80M, A105M, ED81S, ED103S, ED115S, NA140SS, ED80Sf, AX103S, VC200L, VMC200L
  • Dovetail Tube Plate

The Vixen Dovetail Tube Plate attaches to the Vixen Great Polaris, Great Polaris DX, GP2, GPD2, Porta, Sphinx, and SXD telescope mounts, as well as the Great Polaris' many 'copies' on the market such as the Celestron CG-5 & Meade LXD75 mounts.  This is the plate to choose for most situations where you're just mounting a scope and perhaps a camera atop the scope.  If you wish to mount a more complex arrangement of guide scope aside a main scope, or a scope and a large camera setup aside one another, then instead use the #2576 DX Accessory Plate.

The Vixen #2661 dovetail plate's drilled to carry Vixen's tube rings, which hold the telescopes themselves.  Atop the tube rings which you would attach to this plate, you can attach Vixen's #3548 Tube Ring Accessory Plate to mount a small camera, finderscope, etc.
