Eizo CG318-4K overview

  • 1Description

The ColorEdge CG318-4K 31.1" 17:9 IPS Monitor from EIZO features a 4096 x 2160 resolution along with an enhanced pixel density for even greater clarity. The built-in color sensor ensures the monitor maintains your settings by adjusting various aspects of the display at pre-determined intervals. The display itself reproduces 99% of the Adobe RGB color space for enhanced color accuracy while remaining uniform from corner to corner thanks to EIZO's DUE equalizer technology. Within 3 minutes of the time you turn on your CG318-4K monitor the display will be warmed up and ready to use.

The EIZO CG318-4K comes equipped with DisplayPort, and HDMI inputs, making it easy to plug this monitor into a variety of computer configurations. The IPS display comes with a max resolution of 4096 x 2160, a 1500:1 contrast ratio, a 9 ms response time, a brightness rating of 350 cd/m² and support for up to 1.07 billion colors. Whether mounting this VESA-compatible monitor to the wall or viewing it from the stand, you can see the display from nearly any point of view as it supports 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles.

Enhanced Resolution
The ColorEdge CG318-4K display features a 4096 x 2160 resolution surpassing the clarity offered by Full HD 1920 x 1080. It's ideal for creating, editing, and referencing with 2D and 3D CGI, VFX, compositing, and color grading.
Large 31.1" Screen
Whether you are creating, editing, or checking your work, this screen offers ample space to focus on 4K content. The enhanced pixel density ensures this monitor is suited for both photo retouching and printing.
Reproduces 98% of DCI-P3
This wide-gamut monitor reproduces almost the entire DCI-P3 standard used in digital cinema. It also covers 100% of the Rec. 709, EBU, and SMPTE-C standards, and 99% of Adobe RGB. What's more, it reproduces the sky blues and lush greens that standard sRGB monitors cannot.
SelfCalibration Sensor
Automate your calibration with the SelfCalibration sensor that is housed within the monitor's top bezel and swings down onto the screen only when calibrating. This sensor eliminates the need for a third-party calibration device and works with EIZO's ColorNavigator 6 and ColorNavigator NX software.
Color Navigator 6 Color Management Software
For individual users such as photographers that require multiple options for monitor profiling and print matching.
ColorNavigator NX Color Management Software
For organizations that want to conduct color management from one location.
True Blacks with 1500:1 Contrast Ratio
In compliance with the DCI standard, the contrast ratio is a high 1500:1. This produces true blacks that are otherwise difficult to display on a typical LCD monitor. Even when viewing the screen from an angle in a dimly-lit studio the dark tones retain their depth. Also, you can prioritize a high brightness and contrast ratio over the screen brightness uniformity by pressing a button on the front of the monitor.
Multiple Inputs
With a single cable, the DCI 4K resolution at 60 Hz is supported by both DisplayPort 1.2 inputs and at 30 Hz by both HDMI inputs.
Consistent Color Display with IPS Panel
A large screen monitor often exhibits color shift when viewed from an angle. With an IPS panel, more than one person can view the screen at once with little change in color or contrast.
Uniformity from Corner to Corner
Fluctuations in brightness and chromaticity on different parts of the screen are a common trait of LCD monitors. To counteract this, EIZO's patented digital uniformity equalizer (DUE) technology ensures a Delta-E difference of 3 or less across the screen when the monitor leaves the factory. DUE also counterbalances the influences that a fluctuating ambient temperature may have on color temperature and brightness to ensure stable image display.
10-Bit Simultaneous Display
With 10-bit simultaneous color display from a 16-bit look-up table, the CG318-4K can show more than one billion colors simultaneously. This is 64 times as many colors as you get with 8-bit display which results in even smoother color gradations and reduced Delta-E between two adjacent colors.

Note a graphics board and software which support 10-bit output are also necessary for 10-bit display. Equipment that supports Deep Color is necessary with the HDMI inputs.
3D LUT for Accurate Color Display
A 3D LUT is included which adjusts colors individually on an RGB cubic table. With the emulation function of ColorNavigator 6 and ColorNavigator NX, the 3D LUT applies a film look to the image so creators can check how it will be seen by their audience.
Stable Color in Just Three Minutes
A typical monitor takes 30 minutes or more for its brightness, chromaticity, and tone characteristics to stabilize. EIZO has shortened the warm-up time to a mere three minutes. Whether you are working in a studio or taking the monitor with you on location, you get reliable color display soon after turning the monitor on.
Individually Adjusted at the Factory
EIZO adjusts the RGB color characteristics of each monitor at its factory to eliminate variation and ensure smooth tonal display.
ColorNavigator Network Software
With ColorNavigator Network software, an administrator can centralize management of all CG318-4K and other ColorEdge monitors on a network. For example the administrator can self-calibrate, set color modes, register or edit asset management settings and other tasks whether the monitors are local or remote. This ensures that monitors always have the proper settings and saves hundreds or even thousands of hours in annual maintenance time.
Broadcast and Cinema Presets
Preset modes for EBU, Rec. 709, SMPTE-C, and DCI ensure you can work in the appropriate color spaces and gamma values. To switch between the presets just push a button on the front of the monitor. With the built-in calibration sensor, you can adjust or maintain the brightness setting for each preset.
Safe Area Marker
A safe area marker designates the area of the screen that will be displayed on any display device. This allows you to confirm that subtitles and other text will be visible.

Note available with HDMI inputs only.
Flicker-Free for Reduced Eye Fatigue
The ColorEdge CG318-4K offers flicker-free viewing at all brightness levels. Now you can work without worrying about eye fatigue caused by viewing a flickering screen for long periods of time.
Shading Hood Included
To prevent ambient light from reflecting off the screen, a shading hood that surrounds the top and left and right sides is bundled with the monitor.

    Eizo CG318-4K reviews

ColorEdge CG318-4K 31.1" Widescreen LED Backlit IPS Monitor (Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Monitor, Calibration Fool-proof After looking for a high end monitor for months, I decided on the ColorEdge. I am an armature photographer (with pro equipment). At 4K the detail is amazing, editing photos has moved to a new level. Also have a Dell 30 inch monitor sitting right next to this one, the difference is considerable. Calibration is a simple as a few key strokes. The hardware to read the screen is build into the monitor, it deploys and retracts automatically. I calibrate now as the light environment changes because its so easy. The hood allows grater flexibility in positioning he monitor. Bottom line, better color, better detail, easy to calibrate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible. After extensive research it appeared that this monitor is up there with the best there is. Very pricey but I suspect the longer I work with it, the more I will appreciate the value. As a photographer, color accuracy and image details are very important to me. As I look back at images I've processed on the old monitor, I'm realizing that I'll have to re-process many of them now that I can see much more with this monitor. I also shoot a great deal of black & white with a Leica Monochrom, seeing those images on this monitor takes my breath away as I look at the rich tones and details in the shadows. If you want the best and you have the money for this guy, spend it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I winced at the price, but I LOVE the results! I'm an amateur photographer doing this as a retirement pastime. I was going NUTS trying to use a reasonably good HDTV as a monitor for my photo files. I decided 4K UHD and 10-bit color was what I wanted to take my post processing to a much higher level. I researched several monitors in my quest, from about $1,000 to this model (the Eizo.) My wife (a.k.a., 'She who must be obeyed!') convinced me I should spend what it took and get the best monitor I could. Sooooo ... My son helped me run a 'torture test' once we set everything up. This consisted of a 1 week, 24/7 run of random full screen images of pure tones ... primary colors, secondary colors, shades of gray, white and black. The idea was to not give the monitor a rest and see if any of the pixels would fail during that period. To our surprise and delight we could not find a single pixel or sub-pixel failure at the end of that period! Image quality ... To try and compare the Eizo to my old HDTV just isn't fair. There simply is no comparison. I expected an outstanding image ... What I saw seemed to be the personification of perfection. I am still learning the intricacies and fine art of color balancing and color management with this unit, but the built-in sensor and automated self-calibration features are incredible! Caveats: 1 - If you want to take advantage of 10-bit color in Photoshop you MUST have the proper GPU to support it. Before I made my purchase I confirmed with a very helpful tech at Eizo that my GeForce 950 would NOT do what I wanted. I therefore upgraded that to a Quadro M4000 series at the same time. Do your homework here for your system so you won't be disappointed later! 2 - Be prepared to have to squint from time-to-time. I suspect this is a function of ANY 4K monitor, but SOME programs simply won't let you (or I haven't as yet discovered how to) make their selection menus large enough to be easily read. You CAN read it, you just have to look closely!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is it. Not much to say really. This is a big self-calibrating 4K Eizo. Everyone would own one if not for the cost. Image quality? Again - its a 4K Eizo. My 5K iMac has more resolution but not the color. The self-calibration aspect is wonderful. I used to be a little lazy calibrating my old Eizo but here it gets done with the push of a button. Sweet. Text and sliders are quite small in programs like Lightroom. That took some adjusting to. I may move to one of those controllers being sold now. In short - If you can afford it; buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You will have to see it to believe it Expensive is the only con generally reported in reviews of this monitor. But that's relative. Is it expensive for the best color display you've ever seen with your photos? For sharpness so clear that curved figures and diagonals have no saw toothing, even up close? For a self-calibrator that gives you 99% of Adobe RGB? I find that you get what you pay for, and this Eizo is a case in point. I had a Dell 30 for six years and it finally hit its limit. I'd been salivating over reviews of Eizo products and decided to give this bad boy a try. I had to wait 4 months for delivery, but I've been really impressed. Colors pop, sharpness is incredible - you need a 5X loupe to see any pixels on the screen. Calibration no longer requires a Spyder 4 Pro as I used to use, and ten minutes each time to do it. Now, a built-in arm swoops down and calibrates the screen in a minute, easy enough to do once a week or any time you sit down. Overall with the hood, the monitor is lighter than my old Dell, important if you put it on an arm instead of the stand. It comes with a full set of 6' connection wires, a firm stand with easy adjustment, a glare-reducing screen and a custom hood to further reduce glare, complete documentation, and a spray bottle of plasma cleaner, just in case you are still wondering what you're paying all that money for. Photoshop looks like a new application, you will think you're looking at real life on the screen. One admonition - you will need a powerful video card to drive this monitor, unless you already have a 4K monitor. Perhaps another expense. A number of people must have bought this monitor, as B&H seems to have sold out the first delivery, which says something. Don't believe me or them. Read the web reviews of this Eizo, only those by techs who actually tested the monitor rather than those sites just rehashing the press release from the company. But with a 5 year warranty and all the bells and whistles, you won't have to rationalize the expenditure of funds on this monitor - at least not much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING Everything is on point with this monitor! It is pricey but worth every penny. My favorite thing about this monitor is the matte finish, NO GLARE, makes life and my processing so much easier! I highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You have to see this to believe it I've had a Dell 30 monitor for about 5 years and it finally was on its last legs, I had to turn the brightness up to 100% and work under very dim ambient light to edit photos. So I decided to spring for this Eizo, a company whose monitors I've been salivating over for the past few years, and a monitor which has had read glowing reviews on the web . No one had given it less than 5 stars. The only downside was the expense. I will tell you at the outset that it is worth every penny. The screen is amazingly sharp and clear, diagonal lines and the curve of R's in every font are clean without sawtoothing on magnification. Details pop, colors are brilliant, and Photoshop looks like a new application again. The built-in calibrator is almost worth the extra dough. I had used a Spyder 4 Pro, and it took about ten minutes to calibrate my monitor every few weeks. The little arm on this one swings down and in a minute, all is within 99% of Adobe RGB. It's just fun to watch! The CD provides complete, clear documentation as do the diagrams included. Full array of connecting cables come with the unit, and a versatile stand. They even send you a bottle of plasma cleaner and a cloth, in case you're not clear what you're paying for. The monitor and light shield together weigh less than the old Dell, and I've got the Eizo on an arm suspended above my desk. There is no real downside at all here, only the hassle of enlarging type in Outlook, Word and I.E. so that it's readable on this 4K expanse. One admonition - be sure to have a video card that will drive this bad boy, the least is the equivalent of the Nvidia Quadro 5200K. If you love detail and colors, if you need a monitor for professional work, if you want to see your photos as if they are real life, look no further. Don't take my word for it, read the tech reviews on the web, from reviewers who have tried it, not just looked at the specs and press release from Eizo. And with a five year warranty, you won't have to rationalize the purchase...much.
