Tiffen advantiX IRND Filter Overview

Offering a 10-stop reduction in exposure, along with infrared attenuating abilities, this 62mm Tiffen XLE Series advantiX IRND Filter enables the use of longer exposure times with maintained color fidelity. By darkening the entire scene, this 3.0 optical density filter allows you to work with wider apertures or longer shutter speeds without overexposing your image, in order to better control depth of field or convey movement more easily.

The IRND design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors, and works to attenuate both visible and infrared light. Digital image sensors are more sensitive to a greater range of light spectra, and as such are prone to color shifts or casts when photographing darker subjects or scenes that require increased exposure times. This filter's unique design helps to suppress false colors for greater neutrality and faithful color reproduction.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and mounting to precision metal rings.

ND 3.0 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 10-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

Tiffen advantiX IRND Filter Reviews

Always good with B&H

I have never had a bad experience in my years purchasing with B&H, and this transaction was no different. Their ordering site is always easy to use the the delivery is always on time. This is a well run company. My 10-stop filter works like a charm.

Strong Green Cast

I bought this filter because the info said it eliminated infrared light. It did, but it also had a very strong green cast. I could not get decent color balance by using the color correction feature in Adobe Camera Raw (Photoshop CS6). My test shots were made with a Nikon D800E and a Nikon 24-70mm lens at 50mm and F/8. The RAW shots attached were unprocessed but converted to JPG and downsized. B&H was great in not only approving the return but also providing a prepaid shipping label. Perhaps the green cast might not be present with a different camera/sensor.

The Tiffen XLE Advantix filter is designed for shooting extreme long exposures with still cameras to capture motion (waterfalls, streams, clouds, etc). This filter is not designed for video cameras. Here is the Tiffen product description:The Tiffen XLE Series ADVANTIX filter is designed to be used on DSLR cameras in B&W or Color mode, plus APS-C sensors in these modes when used in combination with lenses approved for IR photography. Designed to take extreme long exposure photographs in manual set up, the ADVANTIX filter will allow you to blur any movement in your image. The intensity of this effect is achieved through adjustments in manual mode of aperture, shutter and ISO settings. Designed to remove the near IR polluting light waves, the ADVANTIX removes these polluting light waves by introducing an active absorbing element. This element adds a slight greenish color cast to the filter, which can be adjusted for, either in your cameras white balance settings or in your post software afterwards. If shooting stills, the reddish cast in your image can be fixed by adjusting the still cameras white balance or in post with Lightroom.
