Panasonic HC-V770 overview

  • 1Description

By pairing the HC-V770 Full HD Camcorder from Panasonic with your smartphone you can record two camera angles at once. A main image from the HC-V770's sensor in full HD and a secondary picture-in-picture image from your phone's camera. But the HC-V770 works by itself, too. It features a 20x optical zoom lens with a 29.5 to 612mm equivalent focal length - giving you a wide angle when zoomed out, and a substantial amount of telephoto when zoomed in. Able to record slow-motion in Full HD at up to 120 fps, it can also perform in-camera interpolation to bring the final frame rate up to 240 fps

Through their lens design partnership with Leica, Panasonic incorporated a Leica Dicomar 20x optical zoom lens with four separate optical groups and a maximum aperture of f/1.8. To keep excessive image vibration to a minimum, for steadier handheld shooting, the HC-V770K features Panasonic's HYBRID O.I.S.+, which combines optical and digital image stabilization to provide 5-axis correction. Adjustable settings allow you to find a stabilization mode most appropriate for the kind of shooting you are doing. From OFF for tripod work, to Normal for regular handheld work, all the way up to Strong for those times when things really get shaky.

The HC-V770's Wi-Fi does more than let you capture video from your phone's camera as a secondary camera angle. You can preview a live image on your mobile device using the Panasonic Image App and change camera settings. If the camera has Internet access, you can even upload web-friendly copies of videos and photos directly to social media websites. Plus, there's a Baby Monitor function which lets you use the camera like an IP surveillance camera, viewing a remote feed across the Internet.

Twin Camera Operation
The HC-V770 you can connect to your smartphone via Wi-Fi and use that as the secondary camera. With this functionality you can shoot from alternate distances or angles for a variety of picture-in-picture images.
HDR (High Dynamic Range) Movie Mode
By combining two images taken with different exposure times, the HDR Movie function suppresses blown highlights and blocked shadows for crisper, clearer videos. With HDR you can maintain gradation in your images in difficult shooting situations, like when your subject is back-lit.
Baby Calendar / Stop-Motion Animation Assist
Set the baby's name and birthday to display thumbnail images of scenes recorded on and around that date, making it easy to find the scenes you want. By moving the subject slightly and shooting still images, you can create a unique animated slideshow. Previously taken photos are displayed with an onion skin effect for easy layering.
Creative Control
Built-in filter effects including Miniature, 8mm Movie, Silent Movie, and Time Lapse Recording let you match your video recordings to the shooting situation.
Full-HD Slow Motion Video
The HC-V770K records Full-HD (1920 x 1080) video at 120 fps. For a more dramatic slow motion effect the of the Crystal Engine's Intelligent Frame Creation interpolates frames to achieve an equivalent of 240 fps. You can easily switch to slow motion while recording with a simple touch on the LCD screen.
High-Speed Precision Autofocus
The image sensor has a 60 fps readout enabling quick focusing speed, stability, and tracking performance.
Level Shot Function
Level Shot automatically detects and corrects tilting in images. It can be adjusted to three different levels-OFF, Normal or Strong-depending on shooting conditions.
Stabilized on 5 axes (pan, tilt, and roll axes, plus horizontal and vertical directions), the HYBRID OIS suppresses blurring in your videos when not using a tripod or other stabilizer.
Multi-Manual Dial
Several in-camera functions can be controlled by the Multi-Manual Dial these features include:
  • Focus
  • White Balance
  • Shutter Speed
  • Iris
  • Sharpness
  • Color Saturation
  • Brightness
Wi-Fi Functionality
  • One-touch Connection - NFC lets you instantly connect a smartphone or tablet to the camcorder with just one touch. Even without an NFC phone, QR codes are provided to make Wi-Fi settings.
  • Remote Shooting / Remote View - The "Panasonic Image App" lets you use a smartphone or tablet as a real-time remote to control the camcorder from a distance. View photos and video directly from the camcorder on a smartphone or tablet, and upload to a social networking site.

    Panasonic HC-V770 reviews

HC-V770K Full HD Camcorder is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleased I bought this camera to tape high school soccer games. It shoots clear, high quality video. I tried a less expensive camera but it seemed to be unable to focus clearly beyond, say, 50 feet. Uploading 90' minutes of video to my computer takes less than 10 minutes when the card is loaded into SDHC card slot. Mac users should explore the software manuals -- some of the video editing software from Panasonic appears to work only for Windows machines.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WARNING: Faulty camcorder, poor warranty I have had two of these camcorders. Both quit working properly after only a few uses. The screen displayed Error. Please turn unit off and turn back on. and the unit would not record. It would freeze with the only way to power down being to remove the battery. I was able to return one unit because it was within the stores return window. I contacted Panasonic about the other unit. They asked me to send the unit to their repair center as it was under a 1 year warranty. After I mailed it to them and paid for shipping, they contacted me stating the labor had only a 90 day warranty, and I would need to pay close to $200 for repairs. I searched the internet and found others had this same problem; however, I do not see it mentioned in the reviews. Therefore, I wanted to warn others so they do not have the same problem I had. Too many other brands to take a chance on this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good camera for pirice I think that this is a good camera for the price. My prior Panasonic camcorder was a bit more but I enjoyed the extra zoom, smooth panning and focus. the biggest issue with this camera is that it does not always hold the focus and the image (without me moving or zooming etc.) can go out of focus for a couple seconds or so. It will add a lot to my editing of the video and is frustrating when the camera is suppose to be automatic focusing at all times. I can see when you first start a video sequence, but while your are shooting a video and in the middle -- not good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HC-V770 Full HD Camcorder by Panasonic Been in photography for at least 30 years. Had a Sony and 2 Pany's now. The size of these cameras is phenomenal. There is really no weight to it either. Just videoed a sporting event in San Diego and the unit performed very well. Used tripod no issues, the SanDisk Extreme 64GB gave me 12 hours of recording time. the larger battery B&H# PAVWVBT380 size gave me almost 4 hours of recording time. The manual reports that leaving the battery on the camcorder will discharge the battery even in the switched off position. So I pulled it off whenever I could. I've had 3 prosumer camcorders and the while there isn't much to manually do with this one the end result was very good anyway. I also bought a Raynox .66 Wide angle lens. works well, bought same lens for last camcorder its half cost than Pany. The Iframe record set up will spit out short clips of what you record. The HD will record in sections. Haven't used the Pany write software HD writer yet. I would presume it will stitch them together to upload. Seems to do what I need it to do and very well I recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Incredibly stable videos I haven't tested all of the bells and whistles, but this s a great little camcorder that takes excellent 60p videos. The stability is phenomenal even at great magnification. I though I would miss the viewfinder, but the screen is perfectly viewable in the sun light. The 6M jpegs are also perfectly usable. Looks like my DSLR is staying home this vacation. My only concern is that the wrist strap is similar to another Pan Camcorder I used to own. That one broke early.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High Dynamic Range A good buy at the sale price. The LCD is readable at any angle. The camera turns on/off by opening/closing the LCD door. It's ready to record in the most recent configuration by opening the LCD door--Just press the record button; press again to stop; close the door to turn off. Good wide-angle horizontal field of view, about 74 degrees. Larger sensor than most newer camcorders in this range, 1/2.3. Not many people are talking about the High Dynamic Range (HDR). This is a great feature not found in other cameras. Read about it. At first there were several disappointments about the 720 MP4 setting: The file size is big, larger than most, because of the 9 Mbps rate; and, the HDR mode does not work on that setting. I ended up using the lowest AVCHD instead, which is the HE-1080 setting, to get the HDR function and reasonable file sizes for cloud transfers, doing public access TV submittals. Then, I had trouble finding any software to make and join comaptible video files from photos or images. The file format is AVCHD-HE-1080, BDAV m2ts or mts, 29.970 fps, with AC3 audio. It's the AC3 audio that was the biggest problem. It took awhile to figure out that the free Panasonic HD Writer AE software download will generate video from photos, but you need to include a video clip from the camera for it to join to. The software will only work with clips from the camera, because there are extra files from the camera that it uses. You can transfer only the mts files with the USB, like a USB external drive; or, you can use the AE software to transfer m2ts files and all of the associated files if you want to use the AE software for editing. I ordered a 49mm lens cap to keep the automatic cover clean. The USB power cord is very short, if using the power supply for long recordings with a tripod, such as public meetings. The internal mic is decent. I'm not sure how they do the directional mic function (cancellation?) but it does work. I use an external Audio-Technica AT897 short condenser shotgun microphone, adapted to 1/8 (3.5mm) mini-jack. All in all, I'm very happy with this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Camcorder !!! I've had this camcorder for less than 2 weeks. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing it. I'm upgrading from my previous camcorder (Canon HG10), which I've had for many years and never failed me. However, after so many years, the zoom button blew a spring and it was constantly on zoom. Still works, but I have a tape holding the zoom button. Time to get something newer. I got the Panny HC-V770 on sale from B&H. Great price. Still, I was a bit skeptical just by looking at the size of this camera. I read the instructions in less than an hour and I was up and running. This camcorder is solid. I'm still learning all of the features, but I have shot a couple of basketball games and the quality is awesome. I ordered an extra battery and the SanDisk Extreme Pro 64gb SD Card. My previous Canon cam had a 40gb internal harddrive. The batteries are amazing. Now I can shoot an entire HS Varsity basketball game on just one battery and there's plenty left. The quality of the video is quite impressive. I also like the way the zoom button is designed. You can also zoom from the touch screen. The photos that it takes are also quite good and it is very simple to be taking video and them stop and take photos by pressing the photo button. I'm going to experiment with the wifi feature, which allows me to use my phone as a second camcorder to record another angle simultaneously. The touch screen is very user-friendly. All the connections are protected by lids (ac and headphone inputs). The only thing that a bit lightweight is the strap, but I hardly use it because I use tripods most of the time. The cam is very light even with the battery on and you can fit it anywhere. The Basic Owner's Manual is very limited. I highly recommend that you go to Panasonic website and download the Owner's Manual and the Operating Instructions Manual. For this price, I can't think of a better camcorder with very useful features. It even has a video light when shooting in extreme darkness. I'm still learning an enjoying this cam.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good!!!! This is my second Panasonic camcorder. It's a little larger in size than my earlier version but I am very excited by its features and ease of operation. I love how seamlessly it moves between film settings and scenes and the quality of the video and picture is excellent! As a golfer, I have already used the slow motion feature to great effect and have amplified it in post production during editing. It has features that I rely on: mic and headphone jacks and excellent still pictures.
