FiiO E17K overview

  • 1Description

The FiiO Alpen 2 E17K is a compact portable USB and coaxial digital to analog converter as well as an analog headphone amplifier for driving your favorite headphones at work and on the road.

Using the unit's SA9027 USB receiver chip, the device can be used as an external sound card for computers with support for up to 96 kHz 32 bit files and DSD decoding (with ASIO driver and SACD plug-in). It features the Texas Instruments PCM5102 digital to analog converter for improved S/N ratio, lower distortion, and more linear digital-analog conversion characteristics than previous generations. It also uses Texas Instruments' flagship OPA1622 low-pass filter, and the OPA1642+LMH6643 chips in an OP+BUF architecture that is often found in higher-end conversion systems.

For I/O the unit features a Micro-USB socket for charging, data exchange, and the option of docking with future desktop products. It also features a coaxial digital input with support up to 192 kHz/24-bit PCM input (via the included 3.5mm to coaxial converter plug), as well as a dual-function line in / line out for maximum convenience.

Two front panel buttons allow you to power on the unit, navigate menus on the OLED display, select the input, and lock the device. All other controls such as bass adjustment, gain level, and volume control are provided by a side mounted multifunction control wheel. The device's internal rechargeable battery provides more than 15 hours of operation on an approximately 3 hour and 40 minute charge.

    FiiO E17K reviews

Alpen 2 E17K Portable USB DAC and Headphone Amplifier is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compact and Portable I use this product with my Macbook Pro Via USB. I can bump up the output to 96Khz at 2cc-24bit output using the midi control in OSX. I am also using the Marshall Audio Monitor headsets to listen to the music and I tell you .. for this price, I think, this product is worth investing. This came with the scratch guard already installed on it and they also gave tow extra ones in case you want to replace the existing ones. The overall build quality is superb and feels amazing when you hold it. The Menu is easy to control and there are not many options to begin with that will confuse you. There are better DAC convertors out there but are at least triple the cost and they are bulky.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best money I've spent on audio in awhile I use this for headphone listening at the office with either a pair of Shure SE215 ear buds or Audio Technica ATH-900x over-the-ear phones. This thing absolutely makes the Shures much louder and bassier. For the bigger headphones, it also improves the sound greatly in terms of volume and overall clarity. I also use this to boost the signal in my car thru the auxiliary input and it sounds way better than just playing through the bluetooth. Also, I plug this into my Arcam miniBlink both in the car and office to get high quality wireless DAC and use this FiiO as an amp only. This shows how different the two DAC chips sound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality device! The amp is really well made. Feels solid. Simple operation. Comes with all accessories that you'll would ask. The sound is awesome, Ive tried with some in ear audio technica cheap phones and you can notice the difference, but when you try in a good quality! I have a AKG 702 not moded... what a improvement in the bass... you can hear every detail, and get an even better sound stage. I really love that combination an I'm really happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a decent DAC and Amp for the price range I use this for portable use with my JVC DX1000 phones and it does pretty good. I have had Fiio EO7K before and seems they have changed the bass response on the E17K, it has less mid bass hump and more sub bass boost, the mids are more neutral in line with highs. Sounds is more neutral leaning on Warm side.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FiiO E17k USB DAC and Headphone Amp. I was able to compare my FiiO E17 (first edition), and the new FiiO E17k that I purchased from B&H. Using the amps only, driven from my iPhone's LOD port to the E17 'Aux' port, they sound very similar, with the new E17k having slightly more 'presence' and 'air'. So the sound alone is very much the same, but the controls and interface are somewhat different. The most important difference is the volume wheel that doubles as a controller when changing modes or bass, treble etc. Although this wheel changes volume digitally as does the buttons on the E17, the wheel is a more positive control and a welcome change for the new E17k. The E17k DAC does not support the iPhone, but it may support some non-Apple portable devices. As a USB DAC for computers, the E17k as well as the E17 provide their best sound quality. Comparing the E17 and E17k directly, the E17k has a better soundstage and sense of depth, but it's not something that will stand out for users who haven't compared a lot of headphone amps - it does sound extremely good however. The E17k does not have the old mini-USB jack - it has the new micro-USB jack. The only other connectors are the headphone jack, the analog in/out jack, and a coax input jack. The E17k size is like a very thin deck of playing cards, with a solidly strong aluminum outer case. All in all, a good value and highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fiio USB DAC & Headphone Amp The Fiio Alpen 2E17K portable USB DAC & Headphone amp is a useful & versatile piece of audio equipment. Initially, I owned a Cambridge DAC Magic that I used with my laptop USB port because the headphone out jack was malfunctioning. Boy was I glad that the outlet jack was broken because the USB DAC gave me at least 5x greater fidelity with the same headphones. Anyways, after the Magic was stolen I went a different route with the Fiio Alpen 2. It too sounds great through my pc's USB but it can also be used with smartphones or MP3 players. The multi-use flexibility and added portability with a built-in battery make it a treat. What's more is that is costs less than many USB (only) DAC headphone amps. The only Con I have is with Fiio's nonstandard product warrantee registration for which I never navigated. Oh well it is solidly built and I have no doubt I'll get more than the 1 year it is guaranteed for

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent I use this with very sensitive headphones (Grado 625e) so all my sources can easily drive them. However, when used as a DAC on my MacBook Pro the sound stage clearly improves. The instruments are more balanced on the stage and subtle details like hall reverb comes through more clearly. When used as an amp I like the easy control this gives you even the quality improvement is not as obvious. I recommend this unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First venture into hi-hi and loving it My music sounds better than when just plugged direct to the laptop's jack, definitely a big improvement. I mainly use this connected to my laptop but I like it for its portability, just in case I feel a need to bring it with me to connect to my phone. It's small and weighs next to nothing yet feels solid and sturdy.
