Canon SX530 HS Overview

Combining an expansive zoom lens, high-resolution imaging sensor, and extensive sharing capabilities, the PowerShot SX530 HS is a versatile and convenient point-and-shoot digital camera from Canon. A 16MP High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4+ image processor pair to form the HS SYSTEM, to achieve notable image clarity, especially in dim and difficult lighting conditions, sensitivity to ISO 3200, and a high speed burst rate of 10 fps. Complementing working in a wide variety of situations, a 50x zoom lens provides a 24-1200mm equivalent focal length range, which is further benefitted by Intelligent IS image stabilization to ensure sharp and clear imaging. Beyond shooting capabilities, the SX530 HS is also wirelessly adept, with the ability to transfer imagery directly to mobile devices via Wi-Fi, connect using NFC, and remotely control the camera from linked smartphones or tablets.

Full HD 1080/30p video recording is also supported in addition to still shooting, and easily accessible via a dedicated movie button. Benefitting working with distant moving subjects, Zoom Framing Assist helps to maintain focus and composition when working at longer focal lengths. Hybrid Auto, Smart AUTO, and Creative Shot modes are all available to refine the look of imagery, and a 3.0" 461k-dot LCD screen is incorporated into the ergonomic design for live view monitoring and image playback. Additionally, the SX530 HS is compatible with the optional Connect Station CS100 for automated wireless backing-up, storing, and sharing imagery.

16MP CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 4+ Image Processor
The 16MP High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor produces high-resolution imagery that, when paired with the DIGIC 4+ image processor, exhibits notable clarity and sensitivity to ISO 3200, as well as a top continuous shooting rate of 10 fps. The sensor and processor work together to create Canon's HS SYSTEM, which is able to produce clear, rich imagery in dimly-lit situations with minimal noise and vivid detail.

Beyond still image recording, the SX530 is also capable of recording full HD 1080p video at 30 fps, which is easily accessible via a dedicated movie button.
50x Optical Zoom Lens
Covering wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, the 50x optical zoom lens provides a 24-1200mm equivalent focal length range to suite working in nearly any situation. Intelligent IS image stabilization benefits this extensive reach, as well as when working in difficult lighting conditions, by compensating for camera shake for sharper, clearer imagery. Eight distinct stabilization modes are available to best suit different types of shooting:

Stills:
  • Normal IS corrects for a wide range of common camera movements.
  • Panning IS detects deliberate panning movements and does not compensate for lateral movements to permit desired camera movements.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS corrects for shift-type camera shake that commonly occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Tripod is a dedicated setting that automatically deactivates IS when the use of a tripod is detected since camera-based stabilization is not needed.

Video:
  • Dynamic IS is well-suited to recording at wide-angle focal lengths and reduces unwanted shaking that typically occurs when walking while recording.
  • Powered IS compensates for hand movements that become more visually discernable when working at the telephoto end of the zoom range.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS minimizes the appearance of shake when walking as well as compensates for shift-type shake that occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Active Tripod IS minimizes the slight amount of shake that can happen when recording video while using a tripod.
Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC and CS100 Compatibility
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables seamless and instant transferring of photos and videos to mobile devices, home computers, and to select social networking sites. Linking Android devices to the camera is aided through the incorporation of NFC (Near Field Communication), which facilitates connection simply by tapping the two devices together. Additionally, linked mobile devices can also be used to remotely control and release the camera's shutter and display a live view image on the linked device's screen when using the Canon CameraWindow app.

Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity further provide compatibility with the optional Connect Station CS100 for automated wireless transferring and sharing of files.
Other Camera Features
  • A 3.0" 461k-dot LCD monitor is available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation.
  • High Speed AF utilizes updated algorithms and technologies to benefit subject tracking and overall focusing accuracy and speed.
  • Zoom Framing Assist automatically zooms in or out to keep a subject within the frame and in focus when using longer telephoto focal lengths.
  • Creative Shot modes help to transform your original imagery into creative and unique works using a system of 46 in-camera filters, which are grouped within Retro, Monochrome, Special, and Natural categories Once the original image has been taken, the camera will automatically produce five additional variations using this series of filters.
  • Hybrid Auto will record short video clips prior to recording a still image, and then automatically compile them into one file to produce a highlight reel of a shooting session.
  • Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper camera settings based on recognized shooting situations.

My mother bought this camera for me a few years ago, still working great! Everyone loves my photos, I love the simplicity of Operation, I'm an amateur, but my photos look professional. Highly recommend this camera.

The SX530 HS seems to be an easy to use camera, but I'm having trouble getting the camera to talk to my smart phone to download pictures to the phone. Also, a little disappointed there isn't a cable included in the package!

This camera is like a random number generator as far as focus is concerned. Boxes come and go and move around. The focus comes and goes. The scene actually comes and goes during macro shots.

An good camera for the first time buyer. Been using mine for 2 years now. I am by no means a photographer, and only purchased one as a Road-Trip/Vacation/Birthday/Everyday Use kinda camera. Pros: Good to use and learn on as a person new to photography. Great in conditions where there is a lot of light. 50X magnification can come in handy. Easy to pick up and understand with minimal googleing. Very little if not any audible noise from focusing or zooming while in video mode. Some welcomed built in features such as auto-stabilization. Cons: A tad over priced for build quality and sensor, as it is a small sensor it lacks a lot of dynamic range in low light conditions, and will appear grainy. Video is especially noticeable. Lack of features that were included on older and cheaper cameras such as time lapse and single color highlighting. LCD screen, while crisp and clear, will show images brighter than what the camera actually takes. Images will come out slightly darker than what the screen portrays. TLDR: Good beginner camera. Takes decent photos in well lit areas. Video is bad in low lit areas. A tad over-priced for the quality. Missing some features from older, cheaper cameras.

This was my first ever camera and I've used it consistently for three years. The zoom power is really good and I've definitely gotten some pretty good shots. Of course, it takes time to learn how to use the camera in order to get the best quality. It does well with auto focus and is great for both close and far images. The only limitations I've struggled with is color aberration and fringing. When use the max zoom or if the lighting is too bright/too dark, the colors and quality of the image get a little weird and sometimes grainy. These are some of my favorite photos that I've taken. I highly recommend as a beginners camera, as it was my first camera too and I've loved learning with it.

Worse camera I have ever owned in my life

I have had this camera for about 5 years now and it no longer works and really never did but waited too long to return it Camera would not focus for video or still shots and could take up to 10 minutes to get it to focus on the subject instead of dust on the lens No kidding it would focus on dust on the lens every time without fail if I did not look really close to see that was what it was doing Entire videos 20 minutes long nothing but blur beside the dust on the lens that was in sharp focus no problem No not a dirty lens I'm talking about it would focus on one speck of any dust on the lens and never focus on the subjects Buttons on camera were too easy to push would turn camera on in bag and run down the battery so when I got to my destination and wanted photos forget it as it had to be charged again Spare batteries not available for this camera so once the battery starts going your camera will no longer work anymore and that was what was happening also as battery started discharging fast after about 2 videos and had to charge again for an hour Many many photos and videos worthless because of camera problems I have never seen with any other camera I have ever owned Anytime I worked using the canon camera it meant it would take 2-3 times longer to set up because of all the problems it would have not even including then finding out it focused on dust on the lens and have to redo the entire shot for twice the cost In short after all the problems I had with this camera I will never buy any Canon products ever again knowing I would just be paying for worthless junk Tried to add photos of how crummy the picture are but site would not upload a picture no doubt more problems with canon products again so I tell you what, I will build a website showing just how crummy canon cameras really are and I have thousands of videos and photos to prove it

Love it!

question

What mode setting would be used to capture action/sports' shots? Our current SX230 has a sports mode.
Asked by: Mark
Sorry for the delay - went to NYC to visit a granddaughter in college. The trip included an in-person visit to B&H. Wow, what an experience. For sports/action photography you should use the Tv mode. Just make sure you set a shutter speed commensurate with the action you are trying to capture. High speed action = faster shutter speed. Just an aside, I bought this camera for another granddaughter and experimented with her photos on her birthday weekend. I was impressed with the camera and think that you will enjoy it.
