G-Technology ev RaW overview

  • 1Description

Lightweight at 0.53 lb, the rugged and portable 1TB G-DRIVE ev RaW USB 3.0 Hard Drive with Rugged Bumper from G-Technology is designed for those who require on-the-go access to their personal and/or professional files, photos, videos, music, and more. When the included removable bumper is attached to the drive, it is better protected against falls of up to 4.9' / 1.5m on a carpeted concrete floor. If the bumper is not being used and the drive sustains a fall, it still receives some protection, but only up to 3.9' / 1.2m. Moreover, the G-DRIVE ev RaW is outfitted with technologies that enable transfer speeds of up to 136 MB/s.

This drive is well suited for performing various tasks, such as backing up, editing, transferring, and general storage, as it is equipped with a 1TB capacity and 7200 rpm. The drive has two built-in interfaces - USB 3.0 and SATA. The USB 3.0 interface is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and will allow users to connect the drive directly to their desktop or laptop. For those who wish to utilize the drive's SATA interface, this may only be done using the G-DOCK ev with Thunderbolt, the G-SPEED Shuttle XL with eV Bay Adapters, or the G-SPEED Studio XL with ev Bay Adapters. It is also compatible with the ev All-Terrain Case.

While the G-DRIVE ev RaW does come preformatted for Mac 10.9 and later, it can be easily re-formatted for Windows 10, 8.1, 8. and 7. This drive is also compatible with most Evolution Series G-DRIVE ev products. The 1TB G-DRIVE ev RaW USB 3.0 Hard Drive operates solely using bus power and includes a USB 3.0 cable.

    G-Technology ev RaW reviews

1TB G-DRIVE ev RaW USB 3.1 Gen 1 Hard Drive with Rugged Bumper is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nowhere near the quality I expect from G-Tech I use G-Tech drives a lot for work, but these pale in comparison to most g-tech drives. Mini USB3 isn't the greatest connection standard, it doesn't have a lot of depth and often feels loose and stands the chance of dropping out. Port damage is a very real danger, and something this drive suffered all too easily. I can re-purpose the internal drive but the USB3 connection is kaput. The shell of the drive is also very lightweight plastic (an advantage to some I guess) and it is held together with brittle plastic clips. When removing the shell to access the USB3 port and assess damage virtually all the clips that held the drive together snapped. I wouldn't recommend this drive for professional use where any kind of 'rugged' handling is actually a possibility. The older mobile G-Tech drives with the silver casing were much more solid feeling and very easy to repair.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I love G-Technology however,... I am a Commercial Photographer and travel quite a bit. So, to finally have a rugged 1TB G-DRIVE version in a manageable travel size got me even more excited about G-Technology and their products. Naturally I purchased one and was set back a bit by the fact that the drive it's self is in a plastic casing. Not the light weight seemingly more protective aluminum casing they normally make. And, although I wanted the bumper and was really hoping it would be perfect instead, it is bulky and cumbersome.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never Worked Bought this because of the great reviews and potential reliability. I was let down badly. Won't work on my laptop running Windows 10. Will disconnect constantly while opening a project to edit video. Won't even recognize my regular editing station running Windows 7 and to cap it all off the G-Drive Format Wizard ended up formatting one of my most valueable editing drives instead of the piece of Garbage Drive. In all a VERY TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I'm sticking with Western Digital Hard Drives from here on out. Just wish they would make a cool bumper like this piece of trash. I seriously can't explain how let down I am right now, currently trying to recover my data from the format fiasco.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick and lightweight. Got a pair of these for tethered shooting in the field and a backup. I like the speed and the very light weight they are while still having plenty of capacity. The don't make a sound and the G light in the front isn't too bright or obtrusive. It flickers as the drive is being used to let you know it's working. Very simple, just plug into your computer and they light right up, ready to go. The only down side is that they are made of plastic and I prefer metal. This makes it almost mandatory to use the rubber bumper enclosures adding extra weight and taking up space in my laptop bag. Also, I wish the USB 3 ports were daisy chain-able. Still, it's a very nice lightweight drive for field or studio use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Drive, Great Performance I use this product for video editing, transferring footage and projects from one place to another. The thick rugged rubber bumper protects the drive from taking abuse and keeps it safe during any travel. I love the fact that it doesn't need a power source. Plug it right into your computer usb port and it powers right up. Easy to set up. Large capacity especially for the size and price. Not the fastest data transfer rate so it probably wouldn't be the best drive to work off of but it serves it's purpose for transferring data from place to place like a charm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hard Drive This drive is great! It is a fast drive that I can use anywhere because it's USB powered. Being USB 3, at 7200RPM, the transfers and read write times are great, and this allows me great flexibility to edit anywhere I go, which is really important. The rubber bumper also adds a level of relief when transporting the drive since it goes all of the place. The fact the the drive itself is plastic is a bit concerning, as compared to the other metal G Drives, however, since it doesn't undergo regular abuse, it has been good!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable New Standard I am a professional photographer and bring two of these on the road quite a bit for back up. Exceelent, well constructed. G drives are great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gift for College Student My son needs a mobile, external drive, for his many college projects. He wants to keep them for his portfolio and beyond, but he's running out of space on his laptop's internal drive. I bought this for him to use for his project storage and backups. I wanted a good quality drive, with a higher rpm speed, and USB 3.0 connection speeds. I've heard nothing but praise for G-Tech drives and this one seems to fit right in. He loves it.
