The Audio-Technica ATH-R70x Pro Reference Headphones are a professional-grade open-back reference design that feature specially designed 45mm drivers in acoustically transparent housings fashioned from aluminum honeycomb mesh to provide an accurate and natural sound. The carbon composite resin in the design improves structural rigidity to provide a detailed transient response. For comfort, they feature the company's 3D wing support system and breathable fabric earpads. The featherlight design weighs only 210 grams without the cable, and the robust construction of the headphones make them suitable for long-term studio use. The unique dual-sided detachable locking cable is L/R signal independent to ensure proper stereo orientation. The headphones come with a protective carrying pouch.

Comfort is king

I read reviews on different headphones, made a choice, went to the store to listen and make a final choice. Some were just eliminated right away, like the Sennheiser 620s that supposed to have space quality for a closed back... No, it doesn't. Some were eliminated because of comfort, like the Sennheiser 660s2. At the end I was going back and forth between the Grado RS2X and these ATH-R70x. The Grado may sound a little bit better but that's going back and forth between the two. One thing I notice right away tough was that the high frequencies were stronger on the Grado and I'm sensitive to that, I don't like went it's too present. But going back and forth like that, one thing became clear, the comfort of those is just out of this world. There's no way I would wear something else for hours. The sound is really pleasant to my ears, things are detach, it's soft on high frequencies, the mids are clear and the bass is just perfect, it's there, it's obvious, but it's not taking the whole place like some cheap headphones. Yes, I will use them with a DAC, it sounded a bit better and it makes sense, a computer doesn't have the inner space for a proper treatment of audio files... I guess...

I LOVE my pair of ATH-R70x headphones!

Several months ago I bought a pair of the ATH-R70x headphones because I was going to spend 2 months traveling India and I wanted to be able to mix while I was traveling without dragging my Genelec 8020s all over the country. The clarity and frequency response of these headphones is incredible. They are so comfortable that I can spend 3-8 hours mixing music without getting any symptoms of ear fatigue. I initially thought when I opened them up and held them for the first time that they were going to break because the swivel joints looked so frail - but lo and behold they are constructed of such strong and light materials that after 2 months of deserts, dangerous bus rides, and other perils they are the same now as they were when I bought them - so the build quality is top notch. There are only 2 things buyers need to be aware of when purchasing a pair of ATH-R70x headphones: 1) The ohm impedance is such that these headphones are quiet if you are just plugging them into your laptop's headphone jack and if you are somewhere with some ambient noise (like a cafe) they may be too quiet to work with so you'll want have some kind of audio interface or DAC that will amplify them to a more appropriate level (and no, putting a utility on your master channel and cranking it isn't going to give you the clarity you need with the amplification you've achieved - use a sound card or a DAC). 2) These need to be used with Sonarworks Reference 4 to "truly" achieve a flat frequency response. Before I used Reference 4 I was finding that when I would mix on the R70x's and then check them on the Genelecs the high frequencies would be too harsh and the low end would be lacking - after mixing with Reference 4 I have no problems when I jump on the Genelecs - everything sounds as good on the Genelecs as they do on the R70x's! Long story short: These are great, I recommend them to everyone who needs to do critical mixing on the road. These will last a LONG time and oh my, they sound great

Can these ATH-R70x headphones be properly powered by an iphone or do they need to be connected to an amplifier?

You wouldn't need an external amplifier these headphones. You could get better performance out of them if you did however.
