Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA Overview

Flagship Professional Open-Back Reference Headphones
The Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa represents the pinnacle of the company's professional open-back reference headphones, offering an unparalleled combination of accuracy, transparency, and comfort tailored for discerning audio engineers, producers, and musicians. Designed for mixing, mastering, and creative workflows, this upgraded version of the renowned ATH-R70x retains its predecessor's natural and balanced sound while enhancing accuracy and detail. The result is a superior listening experience with precise imaging and depth, ideal for stereo, surround, and immersive audio formats.

The fully open-back design ensures unrestricted airflow, minimizing internal resonance for accurate natural sound and expansive, realistic soundstage. Weighing just 7 ounces, the featherlight construction incorporates a streamlined, metal-reinforced build, a reimagined headband for optimal fit, and replaceable velour earpads, ensuring exceptional comfort during extended sessions. Additionally, the dual-sided, detachable locking cable is L/R-signal independent to maintain accurate stereo orientation. Every pair of ATH-R70xa headphones is meticulously assembled with precision-engineered in-house components and subjected to rigorous testing at Audio-Technica's Tokyo facility, ensuring the highest standard of quality and performance.

Fully Open-Back Design—Made for Critical Listening
  • The fully open-back design relies entirely on the performance of the driver, with each diaphragm movement translating directly into sound, free from the influence of acoustic cavities or resonances that enhance certain frequencies.
  • While the ATH-R70x employed damping and acoustic design to emphasize low frequencies, the ATH-R70xa delivers pure unaltered sound directly from its transducer, providing a truly authentic open-back listening experience with minimal distortion. With an extended frequency range of 5 Hz to 40 kHz, the ATH-R70xa ensures every detail of a mix is reproduced with stunning transparency.
  • Constructed with carbon composite resin for improved structural rigidity, the ATH-R70xa combines unrestricted airflow and the elimination of internal resonance to achieve an exceptionally fast transient response. This ensures the clarity, separation, and precision required to handle even the most intricate and demanding contemporary mixes.

Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA Reviews

My New Favorites

I have a number of good quality headphones, and it often seems like the more high end you go, the larger and heavier they get. I find myself gravitating toward using things like the Koss Porta-Pros, because they are simple and super light, with low clamping pressure. When I pulled these headphones out of the box I was immediately struck by just how small and light they are, while still having ear cups large enough to truly go around my ears. They have very low clamping pressure, but are so light, they still feel totally secure on my head. And since the headband is just a simple strap of metal, you could bend it to adjust the clamping pressure as desired. There is also suspension strap, which distributes what little weight is there. They are very comfortable. I've barely even evaluated the sound, lol. I'm too enamored by the simple, lightweight, super comfortable design. They do sound good. The highs are just subdued enough to be smooth and easy to listen to for a long time without fatigue. I'm sensitive to high-frequency sounds and can't listen too long to headphones with too much hype in the high end. I like some air and sparkle, but some headphones are just too piercing to listen to for very long. These strike a good balance. Smooth and comfortable for me, without sounding too dark. They also have relatively punchy lows for open back headphones. It really feels like Audio-Technica designed these headphones specifically for me. Super light weight, simple metal band, low clamping pressure, non-fatiguing high end. These are my new favorite headphones. They may or may not be the best sounding (I'll have to do some more listening to decide). But I still imagine I'll be reaching for these most of the time from now on.

I do love these new headphones. Female vocals really shine. So detailed, articulate.

Does this set of headphones require a headphone amplifier or can I plug it into my computer's headphone jack?
Asked by: Louis
Plugged directly into a laptop/computer headphone jack they may not get super loud and you may get slightly more "full" sound with a good headphone amp (depending on how good your computer's headphone output is). But I'm listening to them right now plugged directly into my laptop's headphone jack and they work just fine and get plenty loud. They are fairly sensitive headphones, so they don't take a ton of power to reach listenable levels.
