Aputure AL-H overview

  • 1Description

The Amaran AL-H198 from Aputure is an on-camera LED light that utilizes 198 LEDs with a CRI of 95+ to deliver daylight illumination with high color accuracy. The light produces a 60° beam angle with a brightness of 920 lux at a distance of 3.3'. A step-less dimming dial is provided on the back of the unit for adjusting light output. The light can be powered by either six AA batteries or an optional Sony NP-F/FM/QM/FP/FH/FV type battery, with four LED indicator lights on the back of the unit displaying the remaining battery life.

To create a larger light source, up to nine AL-H198 panels can be attached together using extension slots on all four sides of the light. The slim and frameless design of the light means that when multiple lights are connected, there are no gaps or light leaks. One extension attachment piece comes included, which also serves as a 1/4"-20 adapter. Also included are a swivel shoe mount adapter for camera mounting, a diffusion filter, and an orange warming filter.

    Aputure AL-H reviews

Amaran AL-H198 On-Camera LED Light is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 63.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Randomly Flickers I can't use this light for video, because it produces random flickering. This flickering can also be induced when setting the dimmer dial at a certain spot as well. Also worth mentioning is that this LED gets really hot when adding the diffusion or warming filters. I wouldn't use a Sony NP-FM50 battery either, the way it attaches isn't secure. Using a NP-F type battery fits more securely. I use this LED on a light stand for photography now, and adjust the dimmer when it flickers. On a positive note, the light quality is good and included accessories are rather nice, but it doesn't matter much when the light flickers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great bang for the buck. Great colour, impressive power and throw and at a great price. I'm not sure I would use this light as an on-camera light but it's perfect for assembling a basic interview lighting kit. To give an idea of performance; When I compare this to my little Manfrotto/Litepanels LED with 36 diodes - The H198 is brighter, by a factor 2+ (as you'd expect with 198 diodes) and the colour quality is comparable. This is a quality light. Drawbacks? The ability to plug into a wall socket would have been great. A slightly more heavy duty ball head would have also made me feel better... otherwise can't complain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! I rarely ever do video, but I was assigned a project at work where I needed to record an indoor interview. I used the orange cover it came with and set my Canon 5d mk3 to tungsten WB to match the existing lights......WOW! It was perfect. I purchased a pair of aftermarket NP rechargeable batteries which lasted well over an hour. Here are the pros and cons. Pros: price, value, dimming controller, case, diffusers, high quality flash mount. Cons: cheap plastic housing, light can be a little harsh, the way the diffuser attaches feels like it might break over time. Overall, I wish I bought two, highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for on the go... I use these lights for travel and in my woodshop. I own some of aputures bigger lights but I dont like setting them up all the time so these small 198's come in handy. They are super bright and the best thing about them is you can attach them to one another and make a bigger light. It does come with attachment to link more than one light together. Its plastic so be careful with it. I wish they had a wall adapter, that's the only downfall. If you know something I dont, let me know. Maybe they have a dummy adapter for the battery port. I will look into it. It's an over great light for an affordable price. I will be buying more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful quality light I put this next to my trusty Z96 (which on here is a VidPro kit), and The Amaran was A LOT brighter, AND produced a more beautiful light with no greenish tint like my z96, which I thought wasn't too bad till I saw it side by side with this. I like the 6 AA batteries, with the option for a Sony battery on the back. What I'm NOT crazy about is how the cto and diffusion plate mount to the H198. The z96 uses plates that attach magnetically, it's brilliant, it's quick, and you can stack the plates. These are kind of pushed on and snapped into place. I actually take the plate on and off especially when going from one room that's all windows, to another that has none, the color changes drastically. I wouldn't get a bi-color lED light though, because they are not nearly as powerful, since half of the leds are one color, and the other half are another, whereas with this all the leds are daylight balanced, so it's more light! this light IS heavier than my z96, I feel the difference, and the mount, although metal, is flimsy to me. As soon as you unlock it just a touch it falls over. There's no tension. That sucks. I ended up taking the z96 mount and using it on this light instead. The light starts off at like 10% when you turn it on, meaning it's already a little bright to start. I wish it dimmed more, but it's a minor issue. For the price on this light, and the quality of the light it produces, I say it's absolutely worth owning. I'm recommending it to my other shooters. We even used it to pose some photos for our photographer, he loved the look of it! See if you can find a better mount though. The light itself is plastic, so if you're not someone who takes great care handling things, get something tougher. I dropped it though and it didn't have any problems or break, so it's not SO easily destructible. Match it up with high powered Eneloop or compatible batteries, and carry spares. It loses power after a little while rather than staying bright till batteries die. Amaran, if you're listening, go with the Magnetic plates for the light, it's SO much easier!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quality Control. The unit looks good, Nice packaging, the quality of the light is amazing, but has a very unpleasant flicker!!! (It disappears for a while and then comes back after a few minutes). The unit has a hiss coming from inside very strange...I've tried with 3 different batteries type with same results, so I decided to give it a try in the field, Well, for my surprise the light turns off a few seconds before the ceremony started. I checked the battery charge in other led light was more than half. I really like this unit, but the quality control seems to be poor, with this problem the unit is just unacceptable on a professional shoot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good The Amaran AL-H198 is a great little light for the price. I used one for several hours at a reception with a single NP-F750 battery of which I have four. I found that it was often too bright at full power for my sensitive Sony mirrorless camera. This is great, meaning you can filter or diffuse the light further or bounce it for interesting looks. More power is the main reason I went with the non color adjustable light. ( I prefer using gels to adjust a light color ). Color balance - basically I don't really trust a lights ratings, but with modern equipment as long as your lights are all at the same base K you can adjust from there. And to me the most important factor is how it looks while I shoot. I had it mounted to the camera via a metal frame to help with balancing it in my hands. I found this light very convenient for small quick in out interviews by mounting it on an arm - after having worked for years mostly with hot lights then Diva Kino Flo. ( Oh and how many bulbs did we pop or florescent tubes did we break back then )

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great bargain, few cons. Picked this up a week ago. Used it to shoot an event and it works great! Really strong and great cri of 95, at less than $100 is a no brainer! The only thing that I don't like is that the light can be quite harsh and the ballhead that comes with it is either completely loose or completely stiff so no fine tune adjustments. This also makes it so that if you aren't supporting the light while making adjustments, it can come crashing dow n onto your lens barrel. Would be great if I could find a portable modifier, other than the ones provided, to make the light less harsh.
