Rode RODELink Filmmaker Overview

  • 1Description

The Rode RODELink Filmmaker Kit brings vloggers, DIY videographers, and content creators a cost-effective digital wireless microphone system with simple, plug-and-record operation, clean and reliable sound, and extended battery life.

The kit features an omnidirectional lavalier microphone for hands-free speech and dialog, along with a bodypack transmitter, and a camera-mount receiver. It operates anywhere in the world in the 2.4 GHz spectrum—well away from potential TV and radio interference.

For ease of use, the transmitter and receiver are paired at the factory. Just power up and you're good to go. The system plugs into your DSLR or mirrorless camera, allowing you to capture audio for projects ranging from YouTube vlogs and wedding videos to corporate spots and interviews.

The Filmmaker Kit boasts a remarkable battery life, routinely operating for over 30 hours (and up to 50 hours in ideal environments) on two AA batteries. Up to eight systems can operate on set.

Transmitter with Lavalier Mic
  • Made of lightweight plastic, the bodypack transmitter clips to the talent’s waist and features a locking 3.5mm connection for the lavalier, ensuring the mic doesn’t detach while in use.
  • A 3-stage gain adjustment lets you set the input to accommodate mic levels ranging from a soft whisper to loud speech.
  • The transmitter features a single mute/mute lock/power button and a status-indicator LED—displaying battery life, and mute status.
Receiver with OLED Display
  • The equally lightweight (at 6.7 oz) receiver also features easy, one-button operation for basic controls, and a detachable shoemount with a rounded base that lets you conveniently angle the unit on top of your camera.
  • The included cable connects the receiver's output to the 3.5mm audio input of any DSLR or mirrorless camera. Alternatively, the VXLR 3.5mm to XLR adapter (available separately) allows you plug your system into the XLR input of a camcorder or recording device.
  • The receiver features a high-output level with three-stage gain adjustment, which lets you turn down the camera gain for cleaner recordings with less hiss.
  • Conveniently, the receiver’s OLED display shows critical information for the receiver as well as the transmitter, including battery status, signal level, mute status, and channel selection for both units.
Simple and Flexible Operation
  • The transmitter and the receiver arrive pre-paired, and automatically seek out a clean frequency when you turn them on—saving you the hassle of scanning and syncing before a shoot.
  • The system uses an intuitive, single-button interface for frequently used basic functions including power, muting, and the mute lock function (which prevents the talent from muting the mic).
  • The mute-lock function on the transmitter can be wirelessly activated from the receiver.
  • Additional buttons offer more advanced controls—without elaborate menu diving—over audio levels, additional pairing, and channel selection (if you’re using multiple systems).
Clean and Reliable Sound
  • RODELink employs Series II 2.4 GHz digital transmission, which constantly monitors and hops between frequencies to maintain a clean transmission, at a range of up to 330’.
  • To ensure clear communication, the system sends the audio on two separate frequencies (frequency diversity) and uses the cleanest signal.
  • The system transmits a strong signal at the selected frequency to overcome interference even in busy 2.4 GHz (Wi-Fi) environments. For optimal performance, users are encouraged to maintain as direct a line of sight as possible between the transmitter and receiver.
  • To deliver high-quality wireless audio, the system offers a resolution of 24-bit / 44.1 kHz, a wide frequency response of 35 Hz to 22 kHz, and an impressive dynamic range of 112 dB.
  • Note: Each RODELink system creates a wireless peer-to-peer connection allowing the transmitter and the receiver to operate as a pair. This means that the transmitter can transmit audio to only one receiver at a time. Conversely, the receiver can only receive audio from one transmitter at a time.
Other Features
  • The transmitter’s belt clip and receiver’s shoemount adapters can be swapped, allowing either component to be belt clipped, mounted on cameras and tripods, or used in an audio bag
  • While in operation, the system can be powered via USB with a wall power source or a portable battery
  • 4 ms maximum latency
  • 128-bit encryption for security
  • Both the transmitter and receiver run on two AA batteries
  • For added flexibility, the compatible TX-XLR plug-on transmitter (available separately) lets you turn any handheld or shotgun mic into a wireless microphone for man-on-street interviews or wireless booming
  • Designed and made in Australia

    Rode RODELink Filmmaker Reviews

RODELink Filmmaker Kit Digital Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System (2.4 GHz) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 223.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Great, after I figured out the digital noise issue I concur with others on quality and performance. You may hear digital tone/noise in the background. I finally discovered this is actually the microphone picking up RF noise from the transmitter. This will not be an issue if you use it as intended, a lapel microphone, because the microphone is on the person's chest and the transmitter down on their beltline. But, let's say you are trying to use this as a hidden location microphone. You coil the cord around the transmitter and hide it in some flowers. Now the microphone is right next to the transmitter, and you will get the noise. The fix is easy: Don't use it that way!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent sound quality but bulky Overall, rode has done an excellent job on this mic set up. Sound quality is excellent, and the digital frequency technology is great. However, the packs are much bulkier compared to certain industry standard units, and though I do not have the evidence to support this, I believe because of the fully plastic construction of these mics, they will not stand up to the rigors of professional use when compared to the rugged and metal build of certain industry standard units. As far as sound quality, you are paying 2/3 the price for the same quality when compared to their competitors. However, I'd spent the extra for something that is tried and tested and will last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding, better than expected. I've had the Rode Wireless Filmmaker Kit for about 2 weeks and have done a few projects so far with it. I find it very easy to work with, build is good, and its easy to setup. The sound quality is awesome for this price range, and it suppresses background noise pretty well. I'm also getting NO noise with this system so far. I use an XF300 with XLR inputs so the adapter is not the problem as some other reviews suggest. Keep your gain down, and let it do the work, not your camera. The XF300 preamps are excellent, but I also hooked it up to my XA10 which does not have the 300's preamp capability, and had no issues with noise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great wireless lav set! I'm a semi-pro videographer. I shoot weddings, and interviews. So far this set has worked great! I like that the mic screws into th body pack to prevent it from coming out. I like the controls that I can mute from the receiver, see audio levels and see the battery levels. Sounds good. I can attach directly to my my camera's hot shoe mount with the included hardware. Good versatility with the micon connections. Just wish they would have included a output cable to xlr, in addition to 3.5mm. Mic clips are okay, and the windscreen for the lav mic is easy to put on, which is helpful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Quality... As long as you are in direct line of sight. Used this lav as a videographer to mic different people for different shots during different events. The quality of this mic is wonderful! Even better than some of the more expensive lavs I have used. It has a rich, full sound to it. But recently I had a groom mic'ed up that was less than 30 feet away, but around the corner in another room and the sound was in and out. Which created worry about the situation. So I turned off the TX and RX and turned them back on. They picked up better, but still, I expected them to pick up the first time given the distance away. However, it does it's job and sounds great! I've used it now for a few projects and love the sound! P.S.... It's almost as big as a brick though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use, slightly bulky, great signal Pros: - Digital signal links up very quickly and easily, no hassle. Audio quality is good. - Great battery life, and it's great that I can monitor the transmitter battery life from the LCD on the receiver. Saves me the apprehension of not knowing when the other battery is going to run out of juice. - Fantastic price for what you get. Cons: - Larger than the Sennheisers I'm used to using. The size makes it a bit harder to hide the transmitter, especially when the subject is wearing a dress or has no pockets. - This is nitpicky, but those little rubber stoppers on the back of both units (made for protecting the mount threading) keep falling out and are pretty much uselss.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome mic for DSLR/Documentary shoots. I purchased this kit to use on a low budget indy feature film I was working on. I was blown away by its performance and sound quality. The only draw back (and it is a big one) is the size of the body back. Working on a set where actors are moving in and out of frame or walking across frame, it is difficult to conceal the bodypack. I was lucky enough that most of the scenes involved winter jackets or tuxedos. But for a shoot where actors are wearing tighter fitting close or less clothing it would definitely be a problem. That being said I loved the capsule. Great mic nice and clear. I would definitely use it on shoots or scenes where the actor is stationary.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Audio and SIMPLE to Use Great wireless lav setup. There are loads of 5 minute videos on YouTube that will show you exactly how to set it up. Once you get used to the RodeLink it will take you about 30 seconds to get it up and running. Audio quality is great, even using the onboard amp in my 70d. Range is also excellent and I have never really had any issues with signal loss under normal shooting environments. The only reason I gave this product 4 stars is because the lav that is included is very expensive and seems to be very fragile. That said other lav's work, just be careful with which one you pick because not all lav's will work with it.

    question

Does the transmitter accept mic and line level signals?
    Asked by: Elaine S.
I have this system plus the SC4 iPhone adapter and can not get the microphone to recognize my voice. All videos are silence with what I believe is proper set-up. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Would this work on a Olympus Em1 Mark2 camera?
    Asked by: Keith
Hello Keith, you would need to check with Olympus to find out if the EM1 has a compatible 1/8" TRS microphone input. If it does, then there is no reason it shouldn't work.

    question

Would this be a good option for sending sound to camera from a mixer?

The RodeLink Wireless Filmmaker Kit can take a line level from a mixer, BUT with adjustments. This item can not send a full loud line level.

    question

My coldshoe for the RX broke. What is the threadsize I need to get a replacement coldshoe mount? Does Rode sell a replacement?
    Asked by: Dante G.
Rode warranty and repair service have been top notch for all my issues. If you can spare it for a little while I would go through them instead of fixing yourself and negating the warranty. They have repaired my SVM two times for various reasons then they just replaced the unit in its entirety. Its hard to find customer service these days like theirs.
