Arturia BeatStep Pro Overview

Create and perform electronic music with the white Arturia BeatStep Pro , an analog and MIDI controller / sequencer for software instruments, analog and digital hardware synthesizers, drum machines, drum kits, and iPad applications. The unit features 16 projects, each with two melodic sequencers offering up to 64 steps per sequence, and 16 sequences per project. Additionally, the drum sequencer allows for 16 separate tracks of sequencing and allows for real-time recording via pads or step buttons for a classic drum machine workflow.

Use controller mode to control drum software on an iPad (with camera connector kit) or a computer such as BFD, Kontakt, Ableton Live's Drum Rack, EZ Drummer, Addictive Drums, Reason Kong, or Geist. The controller can also be used to trigger clips or tracks in production and DJ software such as Ableton Live, Traktor, and Serato. The rotary encoders can be MIDI mapped to control filters, EQs, delays, and other effects.

When placed into sequencer mode, each of the melodic sequences offer note, velocity, and gate time settings with the ability to tie notes. Record note pitch, length, and velocity in real-time with the pads or an external keyboard and the sequence will playback quantized at the step resolution. The unit includes scale modes to quantize the pitch of the encoders to specific pitches within a given scale. Not only does the drum sequencer record 16 MIDI tracks, but will also sends 8 gate outputs for triggering drum modules in the analog domain.

The BeatStep Pro offers multiple synchronization sources, including internal clock, USB, external MIDI clock, or analog/DIN sync. The USB port allows for standard class-compliant bus-powered operation. Use a USB power adapter to use the BeatStep Pro in standalone mode. The BeatStep Pro ships with a micro-USB cable and three 3.5mm to 5-pin DIN adapters.

Arturia BeatStep Pro Reviews

This could be good, with a serious redesign. But as it is, it's really clumsy to work with. 1) MIDI implementation too difficult to set up. And the adapters are very poorly made, with the DIN connectors not being sized right, so they're really hard to insert MIDI cables into. It feels like they're about to break when you try to connect. 2) The note assignments for the pads are just silly. A rotary knob to set notes? Are they kidding? Plus, they are positioned such that it's hard to remember which is which. 3) The support at their web site is almost useless, with terrible instructional videos. They really need someone who knows how to rework them. Overall, it's just not very fun to work with.

Arturia's BeatStep Pro is a very welcome addition to my hardware. I have been able to use it in place of keys in a lot more situations that I expected. With this in my collection, I was also able to grow the confidence to let go of a drum machine I had held onto for too long. I had looked at a couple of sequencers because my main synthesizer did not have one built in. It is a nice piece, and I looked at a lot of nice sequencers. The BeatStep Pro kept getting good reviews, so I picked one up expecting to sell it when I purchased another. Well, I kept using it and ended up setting a couple of other pieces free. It is really nice to work with. My biggest issue is one that runs across a lot of pieces. Arturia has created an extensive .pdf manual. At times the page count reminds me of Devarahi's textbook (length more than raw info). I think Arturia could distill this information into a 30 page manual included with the BSP. We could then have it for easy reference.

Can it control 2 midi synths at a time, each with distinct, but synced patterns? If so, what to know when setting this up? THanks!
Asked by: Paolo
Yes. You can control up to three devices with the Beatstep. Here is a forum post from Arturia on how to do it. https://forum.arturia.com/index.php?topic=89269.0
