What does the 40 dB Pad option mean?

The built-in pad on the Remote Audio Unbalanced Adapter Cable 3.5mm RA TS Jack to 3-Pin XLR Male with 40 dB Pad reduces the level of the output signal from the device it is connected to by 40 dB. This is often used when connecting a device with line level output signal to a microphone input on a camera or recorder.

When line-in is plugged into Sony FX30 (1/8" plug), volume control has no bearing. Does this cable help in any way?
Asked by: Nesanel
No. The Remote Audio Unbalanced Adapter Cable 3.5mm RA TS Jack to 3-Pin XLR Male with 40 dB Pad (18") would typically not be used for connection to a camera's 3.5mm mic input since it has a male XLR connector, not a female XLR connector. A cable with a female XLR connector would be used when going out of an XLR output. This cable would be used to connect from a 3.5mm TRS line output to an XLR mic input.
