Pentax K-S2 overview

  • 1Description

Blending form and function, the black Pentax K-S2 is a sleek DSLR featuring a 20.12MP APS-C CMOS sensor and PRIME M II image processor to produce high-resolution stills and Full HD 1080p video, along with a sensitivity range up to ISO 51200 to suit working in a variety of conditions. The sensor's design omits an anti-aliasing filter, too, in order to achieve a high degree of sharpness and resolution, and sensor-shift type Shake Reduction further benefits making sharp imagery by minimizing the appearance of camera shake.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the K-S2 also sports a SAFOX X autofocus system, which employs 11 focusing points, including 9 cross-type points, for quick and accurate focusing performance in a variety of lighting conditions. Also benefitting the image-making process, the physical design of the camera incorporates a 3.0" 921k-dot LCD with a vari-angle mechanism to support working from high and low angles, and a front-facing second shutter release button affords an easier means for holding the camera when taking selfies. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to remotely control the camera from a linked mobile device, as well as wirelessly share images to a smartphone or tablet for sharing online.

20.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and PRIME M II Image Processor
Benefitting both speed and image quality, the K-S2 uses both an APS-C-format 20.12MP CMOS sensor and PRIME M II image processor to realize a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200, as well as fast continuous shooting up to 5.5 fps and Full HD 1080p/30 video recording. The sensor's design also lacks a conventional anti-aliasing filter in order to generate imagery with improved resolution and clarity.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and AA Filter Simulator
Helping to produce sharper imagery, in-body sensor-shift Shake Reduction compensates for up to three stops of camera shake with any lens attached, enabling you to work with slower shutter speeds or longer lenses when shooting handheld. Additionally, this sensor-shift mechanism can also be used to simulate the effects of an anti-aliasing filter in order to reduce the appearance of moiré when needed.
SAFOX X Autofocus System
When working with the optical viewfinder and shooting stills, the 11-point phase-detection SAFOX X autofocus system provides quick and accurate focusing performance. Nine of the points have a cross-type design, too, to better support working in mixed and low-light conditions, and also aid working with moving subjects.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • A large 0.95x-magnification pentaprism viewfinder is featured, and offers 100% frame coverage.
  • Rear 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor features a vari-angle design to better support working from high and low angles.

Pentax K-S2 reviews

K-S2 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Setup My primary camera is a Pentax K-50 with the 60-250 f4 lens for sports and wildlife. I bought the KS-2 and the 70 f2.4 limited lens for candid portraits. The KS-2 feels more compact than the K-50 but has the same menus and button arrangement. For candid photography, its the perfect setup. Image quality with the 70mm limited lens is excellent and the lens and camera are small enough to not be a distraction in family settings and street photography. Its easy to switch between the K-50 and the KS-2 because the controls are so similar and I can setup each camera for different settings such as B&W and brilliant color without having to mess with the menus at a critical moment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tilt Screen is a blessing!!!! As I downsize my DSLR's to a lighter weight,it was between this and the Olympus (mirror-less).I really didn't want to invest in another system's lenses. I also use a Canon SL1 and have a Pentax K-5IIs,after playing around with Olympus menu and found a little more confusing than it should be. I went with the Pentax K-S2,light weight, durable, tilt screen is a blessing and the auto-focus is actually better than the K-5IIs.I haven't done any serious sports shooting yet since we are in the dead of winter but just the street photographs I've taken is impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Competent, Compact and Versatile - Take it Everywhere Moved up to the K-S2 from a Pentax K-01, to gain the viewfinder and swivel screen. Out West where I live, a viewfinder is a necessity for the sunny days. I am extremely happy with the camera - Pentax menus and control choices are so easy to work with. Especially the Focus Peaking function, which is worth it's weight in gold. Auto focus is not the world's fastest, but I can accept that. I took the focus assist light off, to conserve battery life. Battery life seems shorter then on the K-01, due to added functions probably. Have not tried the Wi-Fi yet. Haven't tried action shots, so I will add to the review later. The Auto and Program are sure things, but taking the camera to Manual is a rewarding experience - Pentax makes this easy. So many features like the cool digital filters - you can filter for just one color, and the rest goes to a very nicely rendered black and white. Takes an ordinary shot to the art level. For the modest price, and the ability to use all the K Mount lenses, this camera is the bomb!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little camera I use the K-S2 for general photography. Most of my photos are a mix of landscapes and close ups. I'm very impressed with the noise levels of the photos and sharpness out of the camera. The metering is consistent as is flash metering. What I like: Image quality, Weight, Size, Water resistance, Tilt screen (great for getting down low shots or up high. User modes, The green button, button customization, Selfie mode! -I thought it was a gimmick but it really is useful for those moments when no one is around to take the camera and shoot you works best with a wider prime lens though, The wireless control is nice too. What I don't like Battery life- not bad but I keep forgetting to get additional batteries. I am also missing wireless flash abilities. Over all it does what i expected its smaller and lighter than my K5. has great image quality and tilt screen. my new travel camera, quickly becoming my new always used camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bought the K-S2 sight unseen.... Two thumbs up I've only had the camera for a few weeks, but it's exceeding my expectations. In Oregon, I could not even find one to hold and check out, but being a Pentax Fan, I gambled on it and things are working out. Build quality is fantastic, weather proofing, tilting view screen, a very capable but easy menu system to use, its just what I expected and got.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from aperture block failure Pentax cameras have a well known aperture block failure problem -- which means all of your pictures come out black regardless of the settings. And, of course, this happens after your warranty expires. Pentax refuses to do a recall or fix it free of charge --- and Its a problem across multiple Pentax lines. I had already spent $130 to fix it, it worked for a while, and now it happened again. I am not a professional photographer and shoot may be 4-5 times a year -- and to have it fail the one time I need it -- its really upsetting. So, ignore all the wonderful reviews here -- there are worthless. Everything works when its nice and shiny out of the box Thanks, Alex Lerner

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice little camera I've only had it on a couple of hikes so far, but I've had other Pentax cameras and this has a very good solid (well-built) feel. I was especially impressed with the lack of noise. I expected a little with a 20 MP sensor, but I've encountered none at any setting I'd be likely to use. It seems to have image quality comparable to what I get with my K-3. Also, it is the first camera I've had in a long time that looks gorgeous. I've already had it in some rain on a very dark day with a not very suitable lens for the rain, a 55-300 and played a bit with the settings. I expected some bad shots, but they all came out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what I needed I moved up from a K100D 6mp to the K-S2 20mp. Auto Focus and time between photos is much faster. Best thing was I could use my existing lenses. They just snapped in and I was ready to go.
