Olympus Tough TG-860 overview

  • 1Description

The orange Stylus Tough TG-860 Digital Camera from Olympus is a compact, versatile and most notably, ultra-durable digital camera. Updating its predecessor, the TG-860 provides a waterproof depth rating of 50' while retaining its shockproof capacity to a drop from 7', its 220lbf crushproof capability, an operating functionality to 14°F and dustproof protection. In adition, the TG-860 now offers built-in Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity and a Front Face Button, which is a customizable shutter button for easier snapping of selfies and other control options.

The TG-860 features a 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor and the TruePic VII Image Processor for high resolution stills and full HD 1080p video at 60 fps. ISO sensitivity runs to 6400 and offers a High ISO mode that automatically sets ISO to minimize blur in low lighting. In addition, an image stabilization system reduces the blur caused by camera shake, which is clearly beneficial when using this camera during the adventurous activities for which it was designed. The 5x optical zoom lens provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 21-105mm for wide-angle to telephoto perspectives and the 180° Flip LCD display adjusts for easier low-angle shooting and lifts up completely for effective composition when creating selfies. For this reason, the secondary shutter release button is placed conveniently on the front of the camera near the pronounced and sturdy hand grip.

Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables easy transfer of your images to computers or smart devices and built-in GPS allows you to establish and record the exact location where you took individual images. Sportcam Mode affords controls that are ideal for capturing fast-paced activities including Full HD video at 60 fps, super slow motion video capures, time-lapse imaging and Sport Burst Shooting for fast sequential shooting with interval shooting.

For better control of specific types of shots, the TG-860 provides unique settings for Sweep Panorama, Self-Portrait mode, Super Macro mode for extreme close-ups, and Art Filters to add creative touches to your images. Also, two image stabilization modes improve the shake reduction capability when tracking moving subjects. In addition to its compact yet robust physical form and fine optics, the camera's specialized features are geared to capture the type of action imaging and group fun for which the Olympus "tough" cameras are built.

16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS Sensor
The 16MP sensor in the TG-860 provides richly colored, detailed images with fine low-light performance and fast autofocus capability. ISO sensitivity runs from 125 to 6400.
TruePic VII Image Processor
The image processing engine on the TG-860 offers fast transfer and performance speeds and allows the camera to shoot both high resolution photos and Full HD video with accurate colors and minimal noise.
Improved Waterproof Design and Damage Resistant
The TG-860 is designed to be used in inclement weather and is able to shoot underwater and withstand the bumps and drops that other cameras cannot. It is waterproof to 50', shockproof to 7', crushproof to 220 lb, freezeproof to 14°F, and dustproof.
5x Optical Zoom Lens
With a focal range that runs from 21-105mm in the 35mm format along with a maximum aperture of f/3.5-5.7, the lens on the TG-860 provides great image quality at shooting lengths from wide-angle to telephoto. The wide-angle allows for expansive vistas and the telephoto lengths can bring distant subjects closer. Because this camera is meant to be used in all weather conditions, the lens is provided with a water-repellent coating to keep rain drops and condensation from clouding-up the image.
1080p Full HD Video at 60 Frames Per Second
Record full high definition 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second due to the combination of processing power and image sensor technology. Also possible is slow motion and super slow motion video recording in lower resolution.
3.0" 180° Tilting LCD Display
The 460k-dot 3.0" tilting LCD display allows you to easily see when shooting from low angles and makes framing self-portraits and other difficult to shoot scenes much simpler.
Built-In Wi-Fi and GPS
Wirelessly transfer your images to a smart device or Wi-Fi enabled computer for storage and easy sharing on social media. Remote camera control is also possible from a smart device and integrated GPS allows you to tag the geographic location of every shot you take.
Customizable Front Face Button
An customizable alternate shutter release button is located on the front of the camera to make it even easier to shoot selfies. The button can be set to perform several functions including video start, monitor brightness boost, AF Illumination Light, Super Macro Mode activation.
Dual Image Stabilization
Dual Image Stabilization combines Lens-Shift Image Stabilization with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds to capture crisp, clear images even in low-light situations. OI Tracking is a stabilization mode designed specifically to reduce the shake and blur that often accompanies tracking shots. In video mode a hybrid 5-axis stabilization system combines lens shift and digital stabilization systems.
Built-In Flash
A built-in flash unit is available for additional lighting in Auto, Redeye, Fill modes and even as a constant LED light for video.
Super Macro Mode
Super Macro mode enables extreme close focus on small items and sharp details.
Sportcam Mode
Sportcam Mode provides features effective for capturing heart-racing action and bundles them together in one mode for easy access. Full HD at 60 fps, movies in slow motion and super slow motion, time-lapse movies and burst shooting are supported.
Sport Burst and Interval Shooting
The TG-860's interval shooting feature allows you capture each step of an action sequence, or you can set the camera for longer intervals and stitch the images together into a time-lapse movie.
Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture panoramic vistas all in one frame with the touch of one button, by simply panning the camera across the scene.
Intelligent Auto and Scene Modes
In iAuto mode, the camera automatically detects the subject, lighting and situation to identify the scene you're shooting and adjusts the settings for ideal results. Scene Modes include Portrait, e-Portrait, Landscape, Night, Night + Portrait, Hand-Held Starlight, Sport, Indoor, Self Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Beach & Snow, Documents, Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2, Underwater Macro, and others.
Art Filters
Art filters provide creative options for your images, letting you add colors and styles such as Pop Art and Pin Hole to your shots.

    Olympus Tough TG-860 reviews

Stylus Tough TG-860 Digital Camera (Orange) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Adventure Camera Having trashed a couple of cameras on polar zodiac trips, it was time for a water resistant pocket camera. Dry bags work for fancy gear, but are not handy for impromptu shots. The TG-860 has great on-screen menus and takes surprisingly good snapshots. It has a flip-up LCD viewing screen and a front shutter button which enables neat selfies. A 16 megapixel sensor supports flexible cropping while editing photos. While pocket size, this sturdy camera feels heavier than most and it is somewhat slippery in the hand. I recommend always using the wrist strap. Recommend buying a stand-alone charger for battery charging.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Should have saved my money I have a Tough TG-610 that is 8 years old. Camera has been great but getting long in the tooth so I thought I would upgrade. Took on a float trip down the Little River in the Smokys and it fogged up after 3 shots. The water was cold (58 degrees) but that never bothered the older model. The camera had not been shocked in any way. Had not been submerged below 2 feet. The older camera has been on rafts down the Colorado and New River in addition to hundreds of canoe and waterski outings and had never had a problem. Sent the camera back to B & H for a replacement. I like the unit and its controls and features and will give a new one another chance. If I still have problems, I will be asking for a refund.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not as good as my Galaxy Note4 I like how there are little cues as your go through the scene selections, it helps as I can't remember all this stuff. Pictures taken at the same time as my Note4 showed the 860 to be more grainy, not nearly as crisp. But then I can't leave the note4 in the rain or underwater. I haven't tried that yet with the 860 The WiFi control is great, I really like that. Battery life is poor, it may get better if I turn the GPS off, but I bought a couple more on FleaBay for 10 bucks. I sold a GoPro3 Black thinking I would like this better, and for ease of use and I do, but the resolution was better with the GoPro

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little tough camera I picked this camera up for things that I wasn't comfortable toting my DSLR to... river floats, pub crawls, etc. It's performs fantastically for what it is. Some perks include (obviously) the tough nature of the camera, decent quality images, and lots of shooting options (i.e. over a phone, which is what I would otherwise use when out adventuring with friends.) The only con is not having direct control over the aperture and shutter speed. While I wouldn't often need that control for what I bought the camera for, the rare times I do want that control, it would be nice to have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good So Far So far I have only taken this camera out for one outing. I think that there could be a different camera for every occasion but this one would cover a few. This is perfect for the family time around and in the water. Works under water which is a nice feature. I like the selfie screen as it give me the chance to take pictures with my daughter without always finding someone to take the pic. I will say that the tough does not mean indestructible. I already scratched my screen and don't even remember doing anything serious. All still works but pretty disappointed. Other than that it is a great camera.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from pretty decent...photo quality need improvement I had TG-850 for the flip LCD (for selfie) but had 2 major gripes;1. I could only use my left hand to take selfies2. photo quality was below average (too much processing - lack of detail)but it died (LCD failure) after 1.5 yrs. Instead of paying $ to have it repaired, I decided to try the newer version when it was on sale & also decided to pay another $40 for 4 yr warranty..1. they added a selfie-button on the front (GREAT!). I can now use either hands to take a selfie2. photo quality is STILL the same (BAD!!!)3. WI-FI (GREAT!) for quick photo transfer4. GPS (GREAT!) for geo-tagging on vacationsthe next, newer model TG-870 only got a newer LCD. IMHO, it's not worth the extra $$$.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 17 year old loves it We have had sony waterproof cameras for 2 years and loved them. My son is hard on cameras, so I decided to try this one for his trip to Nepal. He loves it. Love the wider shot, the selfie screen, the images. Colors seem true and the action shots are really impressive. He has taken it in the pool several times without problems. He likes the artistic filters also. Definitely a winner so far. It is larger than the Sony but a very good size for holding, still fits in a pocket and will probably be easier to spot with the orange color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first underwater camera, and I love it so far! I was worried that I wouldn't like the image quality or the operational speed of this camera, because I normally shoot with a 24 MP DSLR style camera (Sony A65), which is the best camera I have ever used. (I've had a lot of DSLR style cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Sigma.) I LOVE the fold-out screen on this Olympus Tough TG-860. I also like how quickly the camera responds. I thoguht it would be slower. It's not as fast as my Sony, and of course the image quality isn't as good, but it's not bad. I get suprisingly more detail than I thought I would. The image stabilization seems good too. (My Sony has in-body image stabilization, which works well.) B&H didn't have this camera in stock, and it showed that it would be in stock in a few days, so I bought it at a place local to me in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Today I took it to the beach to test it, and I shot lots of wave photos. It worked great, and of course it is fine after I submerged it many times. I haven't taken it deep yet. The movie mode works well (with video quality similar to a GoPro, but this camera has a zoom lens). I love the wide-angle view. Its widest angle of view is equivalent to my Tamron 10-24mm lens set at 14mm on my Sony A65 (APS-C size sensor). That's pretty wide, and that makes this camera the best all-around, waterproof back-up camera for my kit - a DSLR style camera with two lenses. Looking at the photos on my MacBook Air, the quality is what I would expect from a 16 MP point-and-shoot camera (but maybe a little better than what you might expect from a waterproof camera). This camera is not small, but it is not big either. I've used the Sony waterproof camera, and this camera is significantly larger. I don't mind. It's easily pocketable. In fact, I had it in my jeans pocket yesterday (not a back pocket) with a garage door opener. I was surprised they both fit. The jeans I was wearing don't have huge pockets, and I'm not a larger person (size 29 waist and 30 legs). The jeans are from the kids section of the Goodwill store, where I bought them for $3 (like new - what a steal!). Anyway, I haven't run this camera through all its paces yet, because I only got it yesterday, but I've tried the super-macro feature, which works GREAT, the fold-out screen feature, which I find that I've used a lot already, the video capability, and the high-speed shooting capability (shooting waves at the beach). All work great. I'm totally happy with my purchase. This camera requires you charge with the battery door open. A separate charger does not come with it, just the power adapter. No cable to connect to a TV is included either, like some other point-and-shoot cameras I've bought before. Another thing to note is the fact that this camera has two tripod mounts - one on the bottom and one on the left side (when looking at the screen from the back). I like that, little extra. It means I'll be able to mount it on a tripod while using an external flash that mounts on a tripod mount.
