Pentax 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

A truly long-reaching telephoto zoom for Pentax DSLRs, the HD PENTAX D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 DC AW Lens pairs advanced optical and mechanical design elements with an extensive 225-675mm-equivalent focal length range when used on APS-C cameras. Extra-low dispersion glass elements are incorporated within the construction to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions, as well as produce a high degree of sharpness throughout the zoom range. HD coatings have also been applied to lens elements to reduce reflections and flare and a Super Protect coating also helps to shield the front and rear elements from dust, water, and oils. In regard to focusing, a DC autofocus motor realizes fast and quiet performance and is accentuated by the Quick-Shift Focus System for changing between AF and MF control by simply turning the focusing ring. Designed for wildlife, nature, and sports shooters, this long lens pairs sophisticated optical traits with fast-paced focusing controls for intuitive handling.

Further complementing the focusing system is the inclusion of both focus preset and focus range limiter settings for faster handling. Additionally, benefitting its use in trying conditions, the lens features a weather-resistant construction, with 21 integrated seals, to prevent dust and moisture from entering the lens.

A long telephoto zoom, this lens provides a 225-675mm equivalent focal length range when used with Pentax APS-C-format DSLRs.
Extra-low dispersion glass elements are incorporated within the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and produce high image clarity with edge-to-edge sharpness.
A High Definition (HD) coating has been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting in order to deliver greater contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, a Super Protect (SP) coating is designed to defend the surface of exposed elements from fingerprints, water, dust, and oils while making the front and rear elements easier to clean.
A Direct Current (DC) autofocus motor benefits from an internal focusing design and delivers fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance.
The Quick-Shift Focus System allows you to first use autofocus to acquire general focus on a subject, then instantly refine your focus position manually without the need for an AF/MF selector.
Four dedicated AF buttons pair with focus preset modes and a focus range limiter for greater control over your focusing position.
The weather-resistant construction utilizes 21 distinct seals to prevent moisture or dust from entering the lens.
A lock button can be engaged to hold the zoom position in place while transporting the lens.
A removable, rotating tripod collar is included with the lens for better balance when shooting atop a tripod.

    Pentax 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 reviews

HD PENTAX D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 DC AW Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Zoom Lens that will Work with the Pentax K-1 I have only had it a few weeks and am happy with the quality of images. I have basically only used it so far to catch an eagle nearby. I am just an amateur photographer, not a professional, so I will not have a technical criticism of the lens. I think it focuses pretty well on an object such as an eagle that flies fairly quickly around his nest. It is a heavy lens. I had trouble holding it up for a longer length of time the first day I used it. My arm muscles hurt for days afterwards. I think if you plan on standing around waiting for something like an eagle to come back to its nest a tripod or monopod is a must. So far so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first lens. Up until I purchased this lens I had been using my Pentax K3 for dig-scoping. I wanted a little more versatility so I decided to purchase a zoom lens. This is my first lens and like all things manufactured by Pentax the build quality is superb. As soon as I removed it from the box I knew that I was holding a quality piece of workmanship. I haven't had much of chance to use it (its been raining all but one day since I received the lens) but I hope to get out again soon. Its heavy but its easily hand held, the autofocus is right on, and I'm pleased with the few images that I've managed to take so far. I'm glad that I made this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lONG RANGE BEAUTY I bought this lens for long range photography. I am semi mobile so I depend on my glass to get me close enough for some decent images. Longest range to date, approximately 2 miles from my porch to the Caballo Mts, NM. I have been amazed at the detail of a series of antennas on the peaks. The lens is clear at both ends of the zoom range and aperture range. When I compare the performance of this lens to a similar .sigma lens, I am glad I bought the Pentax. I definitely reccomend the D FA 150-450mm lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! I bought this lens mid last year for wildlife and birds and am very happy with its performance. (See I often use it with the 1.4x converter on my K-5IIs and have experienced no problems with the combination. Sharp, good focus, excellent contrast. Is heavy but that is expected. I accidentally knocked off the Zoom-lock but this was fixed free of charge by Pentax in Germany, via the South African agent, even though it was bought from @ in USA.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excelent Lens - This lens is my replace to my trusty Sigma 50-500- I have to say the is much better optically and functionally. I am really happy with the purchase. I am a Professional nature photographer, and this lens is perfect for wildlife and close up of nature. I highly recommend it. The autofocus is more accurate than the Pentax DA* 300 and more fast too. And the differences in quality are negligible. At 450 mm wide open the results are awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pentax D FA 150-450mm lens This lens is not only capable of capturing quality images, it's much brighter and easier to focus than my old Tamron 500mm mirror lens. I've made limited use of the lens so far, but the images taken from my tripod are impressive. It's not a featherweight, but none of the lenses that max out at the 450 to 500mm focal length are much different. When set at 450mm, the sharpest images are of course from a tripod, with the camera's mirror lifted (live view works for this).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, decent autofocus I use this lens for bird photography. This lens is heavy and bulky. I also use the da 300mm lens, and out of the two, the 150-450 is more specialized in the sense that you can't hand-hold it effectively, and it's harder to bring it along with a kit. The 300mm is small enough (without hood attached), that I can bring it along with two other lens and use it if the need arises. In contrast, the 150-540mm lens takes up the whole bag :-), even with hood detached. I've used the 1.4 da teleconverter and find it gives good results, but you need good light. (not sure how this combination would work in full frame) When planning to go out with it, I bring the Sirui P-326 Carbon Fiber Monopod, as it's flexible enough to allow me to follow the action, and to keep a hand free to control the zoom. A proper tripod would be better if you want to minimize vibration, but for me, the monopod does the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice lens I wanted a larger telephoto lens than my * 300 and DA* 60-250. I use this currently with a K3. Potential with a FF in the future. Very impressive lens and very bright in the viewfinder. My initial non-technical impression is that it provides really good photos effortlessly. Built like a tank. Hand heldable at 150 but needs a tripod for longer lengths. Took full moon shots effortlessly. ie: low light conditions.
