Stevo- Hot shoe and Vivitar 283 Flash

I bought a couple of these, because i have 2 Vivitar 283. I've used these flashes on my Canon F-1's, and my Hasselblad 500 CM without any problems. I've tested the flash and never had a discharge higher than 5.5 volts. I bought the flashes in the later half of the 80's and I hear that the later ones didn't have a discharge problem, only the year early models, but no one can give you a serial number when when the problem was solved. But I still won't use the 283's on my Canon 5d Mk2, have a canon 430EX2 for it. I bought one of the Vello Flash Triggers and will use it if I attach a 283 on it.

Hoping not to have to buy again.

Great service from B&H Photo as always, one of their techs that I chatted with recommend this because I was going to use an older Osram BCS44 studio flash on my Nikon D750. It works very well and I am really glad I got the old Osram flash doing it's job again. Great product and great service.

I have a real variety of older studio strobes with varying trigger voltages. Using this gives me some flexibility in grabbing whatever lights I need for a situation without worrying about frying some modern camera gear.

question

This unit runs on a battery. My question is, if the battery fails in the middle of a shoot, will it make it impossible to fire the flash from an older power pack? Or will it still fire with potential damage to the camera?
Asked by: Nick
According to Vello, they state that if the battery dies, the HSA-PVU Hot Shoe Adapter would still provide voltage protection for your camera. However, the PC sync terminal may lose the ability to trigger the flash or power pack connected to the adapter, depending on the voltage needed to trigger the unit. So the short answer is if the battery dies, your camera remains protected, but the flash connected to the adapter may not fire.

question

I have an OLYMPUS T 10 Ring flash with an OLYMPUS T Power Control from my Film SLR days (OLYMPUS OM2 Camera). Would the Vello HSA-PVU Hot Shoe adapter with safe voltage conversion allow me to use this ring flash on my Nikon D800, D750 & D7000 DSLR Cameras without risk to the camera electronics? I realise that this would probably only work in Manual and not TTL metering modes
Asked by: Anonymous
That flash is on the older side and it might be a bit safer to use a safe voltage hotshoe adapter that is rated for more like the Wein Safe-Sync.

question

I have a Vivitar 283 strobe, which I realize can be fired on my Nikon D700 using this Hot shoe adapter. Can my TTL quenching work with this system in the same way it does with Nikon strobes?
Asked by: Stanley
No, the 283 should be shot in manual, E-TTL will not work with this strobe.
