Canon G3 X overview

  • 1Description

Reach out and capture distant scenes and subjects without compromise thanks to the large 20.2-megapixel 1.0" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and 25x optical zoom lens present on the PowerShot G3 X Digital Camera from Canon. The Canon lens offers a fast maximum aperture range of f/2.8-5.6 for operation in a range of conditions while the zoom range extends from a wide angle 24mm equivalent to a super telephoto 600mm equivalent. Also, operating at odd angles, or when taking a selfie, is benefitted by the inclusion of a 3.2" 1.62m-dot multi-angle tilting touchscreen LCD.

When combining the High-Sensitivity Sensor with the DIGIC 6 processor, the Canon HS System is created, providing excellent low-light performance up to ISO 12,800 as well as a plethora of other capabilities. Continuous shooting at up to 5.9 fps is possible with no buffer time to slow you down, and the High-Speed AF System will lock focus in as fast as 0.14 seconds. Focusing is also accurate through the implementation of 31 points across the frame. Another feature of this combo is Full HD video recording at up to 60p and the ability to output the video live over an HDMI cable.

Body design is critical when it comes to compact long zoom cameras, and the G3 X delivers with multiple physical control points. A continuous ring is available on the lens barrel while an exposure compensation dial, mode dial, front dial, and controller wheel are also present to make adjustments. Additionally, it has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC (Near Field Communication) for direct connection with smartphones, tablets, and the CS100 Connect Station.

20.2MP High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6 Image Processor
The 20.2-megapixel High-Sensitivity 1" CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor work in concert to produce high resolution still imagery and Full HD video recording with notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 12,800. The combination of these two technologies creates the Canon HS SYSTEM, which provides effective low-light sensitivity with minimal noise and enhanced clarity to truly benefit impressive image making in dimly-lit situations. The processor also contributes to overall speed throughout the camera, including High-Speed AF, Full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps, and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5.9 fps with no buffer limit.

The redeveloped sensor and processor also combine to enable RAW imaging with 14-bit signal processing, the same used in Canon's EOS DSLRs, to provide high image quality with expanded post-processing capabilities.
Canon 25x Optical Zoom Lens
With a wide 24-600mm equivalent focal length, the G3 X can capture wide vistas and distant subjects without issue. It has a bright f/2.8-5.6 maximum aperture range that will benefit capture in low-light conditions. Also, Intelligent Image Stabilization is built-in to ensure sharp imagery during long shutter speeds and telephoto focal lengths.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording
Record Full HD 1920 x 1080p video at up to 60 fps with the G3 X. Advanced features include an external microphone, a headphone jack, and manual controls during recording. This all works together for capturing brilliant images in a wide variety of shooting conditions. Also, it has HDMI output for quick playback on an HDTV or recording using an external device.
High-Speed AF System & Continuous Shooting
Lock focus in just 0.14 seconds with the High-Speed AF System. Thirty-one AF points ensure sharp imagery throughout the frame. When combined with the fast 5.9 fps continuous shooting rate, which has no buffer time, users can be sure they capture the decisive moment.
3.2" 1.62m-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
Take selfies or work at odd angles with the multi-angle capacitive 3.2" touchscreen LCD on the rear of the G3 X. This screen also has a resolution of 1.62m-dots which display sharp, clear imagery for video or composition.
Physical Controls & Design
With a physical control ring on the lens, an exposure compensation dial, mode dial, front dial, and controller wheel, photographers looking for tactile operation will be very satisfied. This provides users fast, intuitive access to commonly adjusted settings as well as the ability to dial in certain movements through muscle memory. The body is also compact while still featuring a contoured grip and a long zoom range.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables seamless and instant transferring of photos and videos to mobile devices, home computers, and to select social networking sites. Linking Android devices to the camera is aided through the incorporation of NFC, which facilitates connection simply by tapping the two devices. A dedicated Mobile Device Connect Button is available too, to further establish a simplified means for linking both iOS and Android devices. Additionally, Automatic Switching via the Image Sync function works to automatically sync images with any discovered and linked PC within a designated network or, alternatively, images are temporarily sent to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY for later transferring.

When connected, the mobile device can also be used to remotely control and release the camera's shutter, self-timer, flash, and zoom from a distance, as well as display a live view image on the linked device's screen. This connectivity also enables compatibility with the CS100 Connect Station for transferring files for backup and remote access.
Other Features
  • Star Mode optimizes settings for capturing stills and video of the night sky.
  • Dust- and water-resistant construction.
  • Accepts optional Electronic Viewfinder through hot shoe.

Canon G3 X reviews

PowerShot G3 X Digital Camera is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Camera (with some irritation) Excellent photographs in all light conditions; highly flexible support of specialized shots (e.g., fisheye, night photography); perfect single camera for travel and shots of wildlife, landscapes, people. Excellent electronic viewfinder (don't buy without it if you do alot of outdoor work, impossible to see anything in daylight with rear screen). Near impossible to protect - any case must be removed to access battery, card. Purchasing lens hood requires new lens cap and filter. Doesn't fit in most protective bags. Electronic viewfinder eats battery - but 2+ back-ups.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon G3x 'Bridge' Camera with 600 mm zoom and large 20 mp sensor. I thought the G3x would be an incremental improvement over the Canon SX700, since the G3x's larger sensor would make up for the G3x's 600 mm zoom range compared to the longer 750 mm zoom range of the SX700. But no, it wasn't merely an incremental improvement - the G3x is a whole different world. We are getting all kinds of images that we thought were gotten only by professional photographers - whether action shots on a field or photos of birds and other animals. My last 'bridge' camera was the Panasonic FZ50, and it seems like something from the early days of photography compared to the G3x. The G3x's image stabilization is perfect, the 'Auto' mode performance is amazing, and I can't recommend it enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally Finally! Canon fulfilled my dreams to have a fast camera with a large sensor with a long focal length. G3X has 25X OPTICAL zoom! I have 2 G12's great cameras with small sensors and short focal lengths. I have a G1X large sensor again short focal length. Now out comes the G3X with large sensor (1) long focal length. 25X i.e. 24 to 600 zoom. I no longer need to carry 2 cameras! I spent the last 2 weeks in South Dakota at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally so this baby got a workout. It's a great camera the one I've been waiting for. Thanks Canon. PS I added the electronic viewfinder to the G1X Made my day best accessory money an buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice camera I bought this simply because it's the first of the 1-inch bridge cameras to offer a 600mm telephoto. It takes exceptional pictures, and in most cases the noise improvement over the 1/2.3 inch sensors is noticeable. The only negative I have noted so far is a false focus indicator when using the telephoto at close range. I do a lot of insect photography and have run into two situations where the focus indicator box turned green when the insect was too close for the lens setting. The good news is that the monitor is good enough that you can see the insect is nowhere near in focus, and you can back out a bit. Overall it's a good camera. It won't replace my Nikon D800s or my Pentax K-3, but it has replaced one of my earlier bridge cameras!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I expected a lot and the G3X delivered I could easily shoot grandkids volleyball from top of bleachers and great football action from the back row but shooting craters on the moon hand held was the topping on the cake. I have just received the eyepiece but think it will become a well used item. I needed to shoot a lot of action shots at ISO 6400 and even several at 12800. I expected them to be almost unusable but they were quite usable. I love the way it fits your hand. Picture quality on my G1X II and 6D are better but this will be my only camera on most of my travels.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid investment for high resolution zoom The main reason to purchase this camera is for the high resolution on the zoom; and a good comparative investment to get that. The most important addition is a tripod, given the zoom and quality of lens. My main use is wild life, plus pictures of family from a distance so that they are not posed. Very nice to have video at the touch of a button to turn stills into movement. Strangely, the light weight makes it harder to steady, though easy to carry all day.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good all around Camera I am a professional architectural photographer and wanted something to take on vacations/hiking/etc that would have a varied use with high quality. So far I am pleased with the images at both ends of the focal plane. I do recommend a tripod at the long focal lengths. Please with everything except the fact that it did not come with lens hood and view finder. Also not appreciative that it does not come with manual zoom. I will be taking it to Costa Rica in Jan instead of a giant camera bag. I will post more then.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I want when travelling light. I'm used to hauling lots of heavy gear, and my lightweight alternative was a small-sensor superzoom. Well, I pampered myself, and got the G3 X. Not a beginner's camera, but very comfortable to operate. I like the zoom-power, the manual-focus button handy on the barrel, the LCD, and the very-intuitive interface. Yes, there's a nice, big exposure-compensation knob. I ran it through the paces - flowers near and far, far-distant telephone pole shimmering in the summer heat, manually focusing through a heavy metal screen. Aperture wide open, etc. Nice lens, nice sensor. Tips: Like with any fine camera, run it through its paces when you're not in a hurry. Train up the reflexes, then go on the real shoot. Because it zooms to effective 600mm, I would have monopod, ballhead and quickrelease set and ready to go. Then, sharp pix everywhere.
