Helping to improve and maintain consistent power when shooting tethered, the TetherBoost Core Controller regulates a USB 3.0 connection between a digital camera or back and a computer. Particularly adept at improving connections when working over distanced tethered configurations, this controller serves as a camera- or computer-powered intermediary to boost signal strength in order to achieve true USB 3.0 transfer speeds with cameras and backs. Further helping to reduce power strain on cameras and computers, this controller is also compatible with optional AC and battery power sources to maintain a reliable connection at tethered working distances greater than 15'. Additionally, for monitoring the stability of each port in use, a TrueConnect LED panel displays indicator lights to confirm a constant connection.

question
The USB to D/C cable needed for this, what is the diameter of the D/C power?, trying to buy the USB to D/C cable separately but can't find the specs of it anywhere
Just in case you're not aware, the tetherboost functions without the DC power. If you're using to expand USB ports for hard drives or tethering, it still provides more power than the normal USB port is capable of providing. We use it on towers and MacBooks to tether, and even when the MacBook is not on a charger there is no problem. Just a heads up!

question
I have a Nikon D7100 tethered to a Macbook pro with usb 3 ports, will this help us maintain better connections even if our camera only has usb 2 ports?
Albert, the TetherBoost is designed to help with USB 3.0 connectivity issues. We're not aware of any USB 2.0 issues that would cause unreliable tethering. You could give it a try and find out or contact us directly to discuss any issues you may be having.

question
I use a 5D iii. It has no USB 3.0 port. How do I use this product with my camera?
The cord that connects to the camera is probably a Micro B to USB 3. The Micro B side plugs in the camera and the USB side plugs into the TetherBoost. From the TetherBoost to the computer you will have the same type of cord up to 15', the Micro B side will plug into the TetherBoost and the USB side will plug into the computer. If you only need a distance of 3'-4' you can bypass the TetherBoost and plug directly into the computer. Cords longer than 3'-4' you will need the Tetherboost. With all of that, tethering is sometimes temperamental and needs to be played with to work properly.

question
What is the purpose of the 5v adapter? It says it is optional and another review indicates it does not save battery on the camera as indicated on the video. Thanks!
External power is recommended for any distances longer than 15ft (4.6m). Also, if you intend to use any of the other three ports while simultaneously shooting, external power is highly recommended.

question
How well does this work. Often during tethering with LR my D800's battery would drain down within 2 hours. This device says it addresses that problem, however what is the real time battery saving time. How long does it go for? Can someone give me reviews on this.
This device won't really save your camera battery. Essentially this device powers and regulates the power for your USB cable. It provides consistent power which gives a stable connection from the computer to the camera. You might see slight power savings on your computer, and very small savings (probably not enough to notice) on your D800. I would highly recommend this for tethering with a DSLR. You will have fewer connectivity issues, and more than likely you will have a faster transfer rate.More than likely your battery drain is due to your camera being on and active while you're tethered. Try not to use live view so often, maybe set your camera to turn off after 2 minutes of inactivity. 2 hours is very short though, especially with 2 batteries-might be time to replace with a new set?
