Hands-On Review: Seitz Roundshot VR Drive Metric Panoramic Head

Included with the head is the 20 MP Canon EOS 6D DSLR with the EF 20mm f/2.8 USM lens, that enable the Roundshot VR Drive Metric's fully automated image capture. To operate the VR Drive Metric you simply select an HDR, non-HDR, or customized program, and then press start. The capture software's simple touchscreen interface has a program selection button and a start/stop/pause/resume button. An external light meter provides fully automated exposure control.

FOVEX PanoMaker stitching software creates high-resolution 180 x 360° spheres and 194 MP HDR panoramas, removing the need for post-production or manual intervention, as all panoramas are stitched with sub-pixel accuracy. A waterproof Explorer case with a custom fitted foam interior is included to protect the VR Drive Metric when not in use.

A high-resolution HDR panorama (with bracketing of 3 images) is stitched and rendered in approximately 2 minutes.

When receiving the images, the software automatically groups them into projects and batch processes all panoramas. No need for post-production or manual intervention - the panoramas are stitched with sub-pixel accuracy.

With 9,856 x 19,712 pixels the rendered panoramas have an impressive resolution of 194MP. Instead of a fisheye lens, the VR Drive Metric system uses a high quality wide-angle lens with optomized optical qualities.

Canon EOS 6D DSLR and EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Lens

The full-frame Canon EOS 6D pairs a 20.2 MP DSLR with a powerful DIGIC 5+ image processor and 14-bit A/D conversion to record vivid imagery with expanded sensitivity up to ISO 102400. The processing power also affords intelligent noise reduction techniques and the ability to record continuous still images at a rate up to 4.5 fps at full resolution. The includes lens is an ultra-wide-angle lens with a fast maximum aperture and a floating rear focusing system to provide sharp images at all subject distances. An ultrasonic motor (USM) enables fast, smooth and quiet autofocus. Full-time manual focus override allows for precise manual focus even when in AF mode.

Remote Control

The VR Drive transmits its screen content to any mobile device or computer equipped with Wi-Fi. This is ideal to control VR Drive program sequences remotely, but can also be used to create new programs or to edit the settings of a program.

How are focus stacking and multi-row panoramas accomplished with this rig?

There is no need to adjust focus as the Metric is calibrated in factory for maximum depth of field. The stitching software is fully automated as well, no need for any input except to copy the images from SD card to desktop.
