Rotolight RL -NEO overview

  • 1Description

The Rotolight NEO is a compact and versatile on-camera, bi-color LED light that delivers a 50-degree beam angle, soft light output, and Rotolight's signature ring-light effect. The color temperature of the light is adjustable from 3150K to 6300K in ten-degree Kelvin steps using a rear rotary knob. A second rotary knob lets you dim the light from 100% to 0% output with no color shift or flicker at any frame rate. An electronic display on the back is provided for fast and confident color tuning. At full output, the 120 LEDs produce a peak brightness of 1077 lux at 3' yet draw only 9W of power.

The light is powered by six AA batteries, providing up to 5 hours of continuous use (or 3 hours at 100% power). It can also be powered using the included AC adapter or an optional D-Tap power cable. The light has a 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole and includes a cold-shoe mount.

True Aperture Dimming
The NEO uses exposure information from the camera (shutter speed and ISO) plus distance to the subject and data from the light to accurately calculate the correct aperture (f-stop), whilst also compensating for skin tone contrast. This allows the photographer or cinematographer to work intuitively with the light, and no longer need to meter every shot. As you adjust the distance from your subject or the brightness of the NEO, you would simply re-enter the relevant settings and the NEO displays the updated recommended aperture accordingly.
Designer Fade Mode
Broadcast Video cameras typically feature an auto-fade button, whereas DSLR cameras do not. NEO allows DSLR cinematographers to create and design unique custom fade up / fade down production effects for your video or to seamlessly transition between scenes.
Cinematographic Special FX provides customizable creative visual lighting effects, for use on set or location (Strobe, Lightning, Fire, Cycle, Throb, Police & TV). They are fully customizable and include adjustable rolling shutter compensation for the stroboscopic effects. An optional, 10-piece, add-on color FX Pack is also available to compliment NEO's CineSFX mode.

    Rotolight RL -NEO reviews

Rotolight NEO On-Camera LED Light is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 98.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from An amazing light source! The light does what the manufacturer says it does. It gives a pleasant soft light that can give you striking photos. It is not going to work well outside in the shade. Even at 100%, I had to bring in the light about a foot and a half to get any benefit. Forget about using it 6 feet away. This light works best indoors or in a dark situation where the sun is not shining. For outdoor photography you will need to use speed lights. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it doesn't work well outdoors during daylight. It's a good product for indoor work or outdoors in setting sun or later.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top 10 things you should know about the Neos The Neo's are great. Here are some things you should expect. 1. You will need to purchase barndoors or cinefoil to control the light spill. The great light spread comes with a need to control the light. 2. You wil need to have the light close to your subject to light them at lower ISOs for still photography. Shutter speeds above 1/60 of a second or images with movement you want to freeze will require higher ISO and shutter speed. 3. Buy 3. I bought 3 when B&H had them on dealzone. Sorry you missed it... but.. you're going to want 3. Not only for 3 point lighting, but using 2 or three together increases your light power. 4. Use rechargeable batteries. They last longer. 5. Remove one or all batteries when not in use. The power button is easily pressed when the light is stored as many other reviewers have indicated. They pouch the neos come with have small pockets for batteries. This is very convienient. 6. The light placement works best when you have an assistant holding the light on a boom pole or a good selfie stick close to your subject. This allows you to keep the light out of of your shot. 7. You will want the rotolight gels and diffusers. The diffusers will get rid of the led light pattern that can occur when you use barn doors or other light modifiers to control the light. The gels enhance the sfx modes provided by the light. All other gels/diffusers will either require you to cut them (into circles with a hole in the center) and mount them somehow to the light. 8. Once you really start using them you're going to look into the next step up ... the Rotolight Anova. Note: Its way more expensive. 9. The power adapter and cables dont easily fit into the pouch. Store them separately. 10. You will need a swivel mount when using the lights on a light stand. Cheap tripods work quite well for the Neos.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Light with Flaws I bought this light after watching many reviews, Bright Light, Change Color Temp, Uses AA Batteries for 6 hours of use, etc. I fell in love with this light. I shoot a lot of documentaries in areas where there is no electricity and having a very portable light with long last on power consumption with variable temperatures was ideal. It comes with a beautiful case that can be slipped on a belt to carry on waist, and a set of filters for diffusion. Light weight but very well made. But there is a definite flaw for my use. When carrying the light in the bag when not in use, you can easily without knowledge, turn on the light, since the power button is so big. It doesn't take much effort at all to turn it on, so the light is burning in the bag for hours. When I noticed it was on, it was very hot to the touch and I wasted the batteries I had in them. I will have to rig up a cage around the button some way to keep it from turning on. With all that said, it is a great light, not as bright as I need it, (Inside a dark hut with high sun beaming in small windows will not work enough, but will when the sun drops lower in the sky. And high lighting the shadow area in shaded areas, I have to get it to close to the subject to be effective) It is also just a little too easy for the filter shield to come off, I can't count how many times I pulled out the light with the cover falling to the ground. I don't want to be negative about this light, just want to give some real world experiences I have had with it, and to tell you that I still love this light even with its flaws, If they read and correct the flaws from users like us, the next version will be that much better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Light - A couple of things could be better Agree with all previous reviews - just wanted to add the reason for 4 out of 5 stars. 1) It is not that bright. Works great at or right after sunset. Next to useless in day light (which you can expect for this size light). I have a couple of MUCH cheaper LED lights that are both lighter and brighter and work off of Sony rechargeable batteries. So if you are going for brightness, this is definitely not the best bang for your back. However, color temp. accuracy may make up for the difference. 2) The included camera flash mount is metallic and WILL SCRATCH your camera's hot shoe. If you don't care, then no worries. If you do care, you might as well throw that away! Overall happy i did NOT buy that full price and too advantage of that 50% off flash sale. I am however waiting for the AEOS and will buy that light as well (for more power & output).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile and lightweight, This little light is great. And when it went on sale it was time to grab one up. I use it as fill light and highlight lighting for still photography. light weight and easy to use on the end of a monopod wth one hand and shoot with the other. Variable intensity and color of light is very nice, and easy to use. AA batteries last a good while, and the unit comes with a AC adapter and a nice carrying pouch, diffuser filters, (starter set of 4). Built very well, and feels quite durable. Heard about this from U Tube and Jason Lanier videos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The one light to own! It looked a little pricey but I thought I would give it a shot. The first thing everyone notices is the camera mount, but what you don't see in the photo is that you can screw it onto a monopod or boom pole. A very helpful feature is that you can change the white balance on the light as well as the brightness. I got this for video but I use it even more for photography and it works great. Since I have live view iI found it is better to use my rotolight instead of my flash because I can actually see the results before I take the picture. For photos and video the one light to own.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, versatile light I use this for both stills and video. I really like the adjustable color temperature to balance with ambient light. I have wanted one for sometime but felt it was overpriced when compared with several alternatives. B & H had it on a special and I couldn't resist. I mount it on camera or on a cage on camera for video. It can easily be used off camera by itself or in conjunction with other led lights or flash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best LED light i've come across This is a fantastic little light, with a really professional feeling build quality and construction. The Box says it is made in PineWood Film Studios UK, and you can tell it has been well thought through. It is very punchy, probably the most powerful i have seen, yet it has a beautiful soft output that is very flattering on the skin unlike many lights i've used before. The Colour rendering seems great, i'm getting a great result for skin tones and i particularly like that i can actually see the colour temperature i am working with on the display, and it is very easy to dial in the brightness. For me forcing customers to buy a bespoke manufacturer specific battery like Sony is very annoying but Rotolight have ingeniously made this run on rechargeable or lithium AA's (for 3 hours at 100% power), whilst also providing a DC option. You can pick up AA's from anywhere in the world, if i only have a sony option and it dies then my shoot is over!! It also has some killer extra features including showing brightness as a FStop(really useful for photography so i don't have to meter every shot) and some great special FX like fire and lighting for things like music videos. For the money(or 3-4 the budget) there is not a better light on the market.
