Leica M-P (Typ 240) Overview

  • 1Description

Inspired by the first olive-colored Leica, the M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera Safari Set combines the distinctly colored M-P camera body with a Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. lens with classic round lens hood, a cowhide carrying strap, and matching leather SD and business card holders. The set is delivered in a unique presentation box and is part of a limited edition of 1500 units.

The M-P camera itself pairs a full-frame image sensor with the quality and tradition Leica's reputation was founded upon. Featuring a MAX 24MP CMOS sensor and Maestro image processor, the M-P realizes rich image quality with low noise levels and smooth color and tonal gradations. The sensor and processor combine to also avail a top sensitivity of ISO 6400, full HD 1080p movie recording and 3 fps shooting for up to 24 consecutive frames. Unique among digital cameras, this camera maintains Leica's preference for a rangefinder design and incorporates a 0.68x optical viewfinder with split and superimposed manual focusing, automatic parallax correction, and manual image field selection. Conversely, the camera also features a 3.0" 920k-dot LCD with sapphire glass covering to maintain the overall durability of the magnesium alloy and brass body. Distinguishing itself through unobtrusiveness, the M-P also carries the select designation of no front-facing Leica logos in favor of an engraved Leica script on the top plate.

As with past M-series cameras, the M-P retains the ability to utilize the vast network of M-mount lenses and is also compatible with Leica R-mount lenses via an optional adapter. When working in live view, and since focusing operation is entirely manual, focus peaking and 10x live view zoom can be utilized to ensure critical focus. An ergonomic body design places all of the necessary camera controls within reach during shooting, including top shutter speed and drive mode dials, as well as rear menu navigation buttons and selection dial located atop the thumb rest. The rugged metal body also integrated rubber seals throughout its design to render the M-P dust- and weather-resistant for sustained use in trying conditions.

The included Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. lens is a compact, wide-angle prime that is ideal for everyday shooting. Its optical design incorporates one aspherical element which helps to eliminate nearly all distortions and chromatic aberrations for enhanced edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity.

Leica M-P (Typ 240) Safari Set
Reminiscent of the classic Leica M1 Olive from 1960, this Safari edition of the M-P features an olive color scheme comprised of a distinctly-colored lacquered top cover, leatherette, and bottom cover, along with a silver shutter speed dial, on/off switch, shutter release button, and hot shoe. The top plate's engraving also recalls the first Safari camera and features a simple Leica logo on one line and WETZLAR GERMANY on the second line.

Included with the unique body design is a Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. lens, which is finished in silver chrome to complement the hardware accents of the body. It comes with a matching classic round lens hood. Also included in the set is a full grain cowhide carrying strap and matching SD and business card holders.

Delivered in unique packaging, which includes a dedicated presentation box, this Safari Set is limited to 1500 pieces worldwide.
MAX 24MP CMOS Sensor and Maestro Image Processor
Featuring a full-frame Leica MAX 24MP CMOS sensor, this camera is able to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD video with marked image quality and low noise levels. When combined with the Maestro image processor, a sensitivity range of ISO 200-6400 is available, which can further be expanded to ISO 100 for working in brighter conditions.

This image processor also facilitates faster overall performance, and works in conjunction with a 2GB image buffer for longer sustained shooting sequences of 3 fps for up to 24 consecutive frames.
Optical Viewfinder and Rangefinder
The optical viewfinder is a large, bright-line 0.68x-magnification rangefinder with automatic parallax compensation and LED-illuminated frame lines, which are set to match the image sensor size at a focusing distance of 6.6'. On the front of the camera, a viewfinder frame selector can also be used to manually change the apparent image field to help visualize the scene with varying focal lengths.

The rangefinder mechanism displays split or superimposed bright field images within the center of the viewfinder to benefit accurate manual focusing control. The effective rangefinder metering basis is 47.1mm (mechanical metering basis 69.25 mm x viewfinder magnification of 0.68x).
3.0" LCD Monitor and Sapphire Crystal Cover
Complementing the optical viewfinder is a 3.0" 920k-dot LCD monitor, which permits live view monitoring with the ability to utilize focus peaking and 10x zoom features to better ensure critical sharpness. Focus peaking highlights bright edges of contrast, in red, green, or blue colors, when they are in sharp focus, while the zoom control allows you to home in on fine details within the scene.

This monitor features a scratch-resistant protective cover made from sapphire crystal glass for added durability and protection. Furthermore, anti-reflective coatings are used on both sides of the covering glass for greater visibility in bright light conditions.
Full HD 1080p Video
Full HD 1080p video recording is supported, in both 24 and 25 fps frame rates. HD 720p recording is also available, as well as VGA 480p at 30 fps. A monaural microphone is incorporated into the body's design and features manual audio level control during recording.
Body Design
Reminiscent of classic Leica designs, the M-P features a metal body design with a magnesium-alloy chassis and brass top plate, which is accentuated by a synthetic leather wrap. Rubber seals are placed throughout the body to protect it from dust and use during inclement weather. Furthermore, the pared-down, ergonomic design allows direct access to necessary camera controls, including top shutter speed and drive mode dials and rear menu navigation controls.
Other Camera Features

    Leica M-P (Typ 240) Reviews

M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera Safari Set with Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best Camera you could get No need to explain how great is the M240, the M-P 240 is one further step to the masterpiece. Great performance, build, IQ. First, the design of M-P is to keep it at low profile, I walked my M-P on street couple of times, even if i got the Chrome one, nobody got caught attention by the camera itself. Second, it has the solid build by Leica, it feels like a tough guy and piece of jewelry at the same time. Third, the amazing image quality you could get from this body, I have Leica and Voigtlander glasses works great on the M-P, flat and uniform image field , great DR and color output and of course excellent high ISO performance. Finally, the quiet and sharp shutter response that you could ever get from a DSLR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing. Finally made the plunge to return to Leica after years of SLR shooting. Yes, the camera is pricey and the lenses as well. But I had just gone too long with my 5D wishing it was more portable and more enjoyable to shoot. I wanted a way to encourage my shooting, keeping the camera with me and getting into the moment to take pictures. I loved my canon L primes but just kept finding the camera's presence to be too much. Lugging around even three lenses and that body was heavy and cumborsome. When the M-P 240 was released I sold a ton of my L glass and bought the body and a single lens. It was totally worth it. I looked at other options as well. Gave the Fujis a try and even the Sony A7. Every camera has its drawbacks but the most significant was the quality of the images in both of those cameras. The Leica isn't for everybody, but it's traditional approach and minimal interface makes you enjoy photography again and really changes the way you shoot if you invest the time to learn it. The Leica lenses paired with the 240s sensor are a dream. The M-P wa s key for me as, although more expensive, offered the minimal look and the extra buffer to shoot a few more frames. If you're considering the Leica, try it out and get a feel in a store. Talk to other users. And pick a single starter lens to get going. Discipline yourself to learn how to shoot it and soon you will find that focusing with it manually is faster than autofocus because you aren't depending on the camera to catch up to you. The camera has its quirks, but nothing that interferes with the joy of shooting it. Yes it would be nicer to have a slightly more sensitive sensor for low light, but the truth is the dynamic range is incredible and this thing can really perform. The strap it comes with isn't great for comfort, but straps are very particular to the photographer, so plan on spending time to find the one that is right for you or if you need one at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera This is the great camera especially for travel I have new released Canon 5DSR with the 50mp as well but when I compare pictures of Leica M-P 240 and Canon 5DSR colors are amazing and more natural in Leica and sharpness noise level is great even in very high ISO but #1 difference of Leica with all other dslr is great performance in low light conditions I really like it and if you have money you should buy Leica !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Herr Barnack I upgraded to the Safari set after using my first digital camera of any kind (the M240) for a little over a year. I traded in my black M240 and 28 Summicron ASPH on the Safari set and after four months, I have no regrets. The upgrades in the M-P are welcome additions compared to the original M240; the 2GB buffer capacity is a must-have feature and the synthetic sapphire rear LCD screen provides the last word in scratch resistance. With the Safari set, we have the return of the frame selection lever, which is a godsend for those of us who grew to rely on this little lever when shooting with film based Leica M cameras. The olive green finish of the Safari camera is elegant and beautiful; the online photos of it do not do it justice. The olive paint is at least as durable as the traditional black panint used on M cameras and holds up well to normal use. The only thing I would change about the Safari camera would be to make the rangefinder adjustment cover screw on the front of the camera olive green rather thn chrome. This is a minor miscue on Leica's part in terms of cosmetics; the chrome screw fits in with the chrome accents on the rest of the camera body and my preference for an olive screw may be just a matter of personal taste. At the end of the day, the Safari set is an unbeatable combination IMHO. There is somewhere between $900-1000 USD savings built in to the Safari set compared to buying the regular M-P and 35 Summicron. Besides that, you get the leather strap and memory card wallet and the outstanding chrome vented lens hood which really finishes the Safari set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great I've used this camera for many portraits, landscape and street photos. The size and weight are just fantastic for carrying around so it makes my whole shooting process less complicated. I'm not saying that DSLRs are too heavy and chunky to bring with me because I used to do that a lot. I'm just saying that the minimum design and compactness of this stealthy Leica allows me to blend into the environment more quickly and concentrate more on the subject. I wish I could have showed more photos cuz I really had a lot fun shooting with this companion. Finally, I hate to say this but still... I know the price/performance ratio of Leica is probably not as good as other mainstream DSLR manufactures, but this company has been in the market for over 150 years and there must be something unique about it. It's not very common for a company that is able to survive from several tech discontinuous innovations. I am not a Leica fanboy or something, but I just like the way it makes me a better photo taker than I was before. (It's all just my personal BS, thanks for reading, peace)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb product! Have been very happy with my Leica M9-P, but this newer Leica M-P (Type 240) surpasses it in many ways. Most importantly for me as my eyes get older, it is much easier to focus. The photos are a bit sharper than with the M9-P, which is to be expected since the sensor has a higher resolution. Highly recommended to everyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great camera, lousy firmware I finally get the item I've wanted for a long time and it's everything I knew it would be. I read every text on the Leica M Typ 240 that I could get my hands on... so I was quite familiar with the cameras operation. I purchased a used but well-care-for Leica M7 so Ive had a few months of getting use to the Leica rangefinder philosophy. Almost everything has been a treat to play with... except for the Leica firmware. I'm not doing anything remotely fancy here -- just using the camera -- but I'm a bit perplexed that (after a few years) Leica still hasn't really perfected the firmware for the Typ 240. I get random lockups and at least once, I've had to remove the battery because a power-cycle wouldn't reset the camera. I know these issues will likely get fixed in time; however, how long will it take? Another minor point, which I knew going in, that Leica accessories are fairly expensive. My only gripe is the battery. $200 for a battery? Really? It's the only accessory I haven't bought. I won't rehash all of the positives here but I will say that the build construction is superb. Everything feels great. The digital M is a thicker than the M7 (which I own) but it's something you can get use to fairly quickly. Leica does amazing Fit&Finish -- just too bad it doesn't apply to the firmware. Final Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little performer This is my first leica so I was really excited to jump into the leica system. It's very stealth and extremely light compared to my dslr. Files are beautiful!! It takes a little getting used to the rangefinder system. I now cringe everytime I have to use my dslr camera for work. Worth the money if you can dish that amount out.

Manufactures do not have any written policy like that. But most do make the battery for many years after the camera has been discontinued.
