Savage Translum Reviews

TRANSLUM - heavy weight - worked best for my use

I wanted a material that would maintain a flat surface in the many orientations that it would be used, my sense was that the thicker the material the better for my purpose. I used sections of the TRANSLUM to cover two 24 by 36 inch flag scrims, and one 48 by 48 inch Mathews Road Rags scrim. Mostly, I am lighting the surfaces of the smaller 24 by 36 inch, scrims at a very acute angles to create even gradient lights which is reflected by the glossy subject products placed between the two scrims. The 48 by 48 inch scrim is held horizontally, and doesn't sag in this position (which was a key consideration in choosing the HEAVY Weight material. I recommend the product should you have a similar need.

This is probably the most useful tool for a product photographer, although portrait photographers will also find use for this bit of kit. You can suspend the cardboard tube from background stands or robust C-stands with robust boom arms and then roll out the length of diffusion material you need and use A clamps to clamp the rolled material to the crossbar so it doesn't unwind. When you are finished just roll it back up for next time. You can also cut pieces out of this roll for mounting in any number of frames which can then be held in various angles by using C-stands + boom arms or double super clamps + poles. This is high quality stuff.

Selling old products. Extremely yellow

I was always purchasing this product and this time it came almost orange. It's because they are selling very old products. If you look in the picture you will see the difference. The one on the front is the new one. And the one in the back is the same product I purchased a year ago.

Lasts for years

I started using Savage translum vellum almost 18 years ago. Recently I tried other cheaper products from online mega “Prime” shopping sites and was terribly disappointed. Savage translum vellum has many uses in a studio environment. It is my go to material for multiple projects. I use it primarily on a white table to produce flawless shadows under jewelry and other retail products as well as to diffuse lighting on the fly without having to setup a bulky soft box.

Which Translum weight would work best to diffuse the narrow beam of light produced by Rotolight Neo 2 LEDs when using them for tabletop photography?
Asked by: Michael
I wish I was familiar with the lights you are using, but I'm not. The diffusion of the medium weight I have used was very acceptable to me. It would depend on the area you are trying to illuminate.

how does this compare to vellum as far as transparency is concerned?

Not sure although it produces spooky soft effects when you stand behind it

question

How thick is this material?
Asked by: Adam C.
This is the one you want for product photography. it won't show double reflection on your glossy subject. It means the reflection is uniformed. If the diffuser material is not strong enough. when you put softbox behind it. you will see double reflection on the glossy subject and that is no no.
