PortaBrace WPC-1DSLRB Reviews

Poorly Made and Expensive

I bought the Porta Brace Wheeled Rigid Frame DSLR Case in 2018. Here is my two year review and experiences with this case. I had wanted to invest in a long-life rolling case because I didn't want to throw out my back from carrying heavy gear. Previously I had purchased the excellently designed and made HIP-3LENS Hip-Pack Lens Case on sale on B&H. I was impressed by that product and also liked that Porta Brace is made in the USA. Supporting American manufacturing is important to me. Because my previous experience was positive, having a peer who loves their tripod bag, and general reviews regarding quality echoed my experience, I felt confident in purchasing this new case online without ever seeing one in person. When the Wheeled Rigid Frame DSLR Case arrived, I noticed it had a strange drill hole in the burnt orange coverings inside. It was like the factory worker drilled there by accident, but didn't bother fixing the mistake or starting again. I complained to B&H and they offered me a $100 discount. I have discovered many additional quality-control and design related issues since. While the case is made from a very durable 1000 denier cordura nylon fabric, it is only single-stitched and there is no stitching to the interior frame offering additional support. Carrying the case by the grab handles is worrisome as all of the weight is drawn to these single-stitches. The suede leather grab handles are also not padded like they are on Porta Brace's shoulder straps or tripod bags. The frame itself is made from bright white corflute sheets, which expose themselves when you extend the three-stage retractable locking handle to wheel the case. The white corflute is not sealed from weather and is also frequently visible wherever the fabric intersects. I have used black duct tape on the exposed corflute to help weather-seal it and enhance the appearance of quality. It is questionable that black corflute wasn't used for the inside of the case to match the exterior. As the included black dividers are made from black corflute, I suspect this case was made with whatever leftover materials happened to be at hand on the day. Though the bag comes with dividers, only a single long black corflute divider and twelve smaller padded dividers are included. In order to recreate the case's layout in the stock photographs, you must cut up the long divider and use the supplied surehook velcro to affix them inside the case. The long black corflute divider is very strong and placing it down the center of the case (as opposed to cutting it to match the stock photos) adds a significant amount of support. While Porta Brace's DIY approach to customize the internal layout is a plus for the longevity of the case, by cutting up the dividers you lose the flexibility to make alternative case configurations. Only a small strip of surehook velco is supplied and I found myself cutting very small strips so that I wasn't wasting a single millimeter. Eventually I purchased the divider kit to get more long black corflute sheet dividers and surehook velcro. The off-road ball-bearing wheels have considerable room to roam on their axles and continuously drift inward and outward as they roll. This unusual movement looks odd to onlookers unfamiliar with the wheel design. Once a client stopped me in my tracks just to confirm the case was functioning as it should. While you can easily remove wheels, beyond airline travel this feature is of very little use as the primary function of this case is for use with the three-stage retractable locking handle. The thick metal mounting points for the wheels appear durable, however the black plastic screw covers often fall off and I have lost one. With age, I have noticed the black plastic screw covers fall off more frequently. On my HIP-3LENS Hip-Pack Lens Case, in the top compartment there is a small tag with the product description and the worker's name handwritten in blue biro on it. There is no tag like this on my Wheeled Rigid Frame DSLR Case and I think I know why. The worker's heart was clearly not invested in this case and rushed it off the assembly line. I suspect my case was the last with the burnt orange interior made before the company switched to the grey interiors most commonly seen today as I was unable to purchase an accompanying burnt orange tripod bag. I would not recommend purchasing larger Porta Brace products without seeing them in real life after this experience. There are clearly quality control issues at the factory. Overall a disappointing experience.

Don't buy this case!

I really wanted to like this case. I have PortaBrace tripod bags that I LOVE. I worked past all the little issues but in the end I would advise against buying at ANY price. Not a good deal at $200 never mind $400!!! Here is the failure list. GRAB HANDLES: Not the normal Porta Brace handles. They are 1/2 as thick and are flat and they not attached to the frame so they pucker the fabric and generally do terrible job for carrying. ATTACHMENT POINTS: There are none. No way to attach a shoulder strap. FRONT POCKETS: Case top is thin plastic and not rigid enough and bend/folds too easily. PULL HANDLE: This is the really big problem. With poor grab handles and no way to use a strap the pull handle is the ONLY way to move this bag around. The problem is that Porta Brace uses a cheap aluminum extension handle held together with plastic. The handle broke the FIRST time I used the bag loaded. I wish I could make it work because the case/box is classic Porta Brace quality but there is literally no way to use this bag without a STRONG pull handle. Forced to return for refund. :-(

Has anyone tried this with the Canon C100/200/300 cinema cameras? Did it work well?

As long as any of those cameras are laying on their sides they will fit.

question

Are all the dividers featured in the 4th picture included? It's a confusing listing because on the specs page it says it only comes with 2 dividers - could someone please clarify for me?
Asked by: Jacob
You put this in the ad for a different case. Having said that, the Ape case comes with all pictured dividers. I have removed at least two to make room for my MKIII with a lens attached, my flash, and my 70-200 and still have room for 3 other lenses, batteries, chargers, etc.
