Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f/1.6 Lens for Sony A (Black)
Key Features
  • A-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.6 to f/16
  • Singlet-Doublet-Singlet Optical Design
  • Soft Glowing Effect at Wide Apertures
Reminiscent of classic 20th century lenses, the Sony A mount Velvet 56mm f/1.6 Lens from Lensbaby produces a uniquely soft, glowing image quality that is well-suited to making expressive and ethereal portraits. The overall softness can be controlled by stopping down the lens while still retaining the smooth tonality of a soft focus lens. Compatible with full-frame image sensors, this slightly longer-than-normal focal length pairs with the fast f/1.6 maximum aperture to excel in difficult lighting and achieve a shallow depth of field with controllable sharpness. Additionally, for increased creative versatility, the lens also offers a 1:2 maximum magnification and a minimum working distance of 5" for macro shooting. Housed within a black metal barrel, this lens also features smooth, dampened manual focus control to further benefit creative flexibility. Consistent with Lensbaby's aim of purveying selective focus capabilities and a unique velvety image quality, the Velvet 56mm f/1.6 is a versatile tool that marries classical looks with contemporary control.

I shoot a Nikon F2AS, the last fully mechanical F series film camera Nikon made. Since this is a manual lens with an F mount, would it work on this camera? (The camera does have a built-in light meter which obviously would not couple with this lens, but I seldom use that anyway and it is not a consideration for me.)
Asked by: Ted
As the Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f/1.6 Lens for Nikon F is a fully manual lens and has a built-in aperture ring, it would be compatible for use with the Nikon F2AS 35mm film SLR camera.

How will this lens work with Nikon FTZ adapter on the Z7 camera?
Asked by: John
The lens IS an “F” Mount and will fit into the F2Z adapter. This lens has NO CHIP and there is no communication to the camera. All settings are old school manual. You set the Fstop and focus. I use this on my D750 with no issues

question

Will this lens work on the Nikon D500 and D7100? Is it difficult to use?
Asked by: Gracene
I use the Lensbaby Velvet 56 on my Nikon D750 and I love it. It’s fun and easy to get great Bokeh. It’s not heavy and fits in a pocket if needed. On the D750 I went into menu and added it to the NON AI lenses. ( lenses without chips to talk to camera) so the only exif data you get will be what you enter into the settings. Well made and well marked.. you just need to roll back the focus barrel so the lens cap stays on.

question

I'd like to know how this meters on higher end Nikons. For it to work in any mode other than stop-down metering, it needs to have an AI nub, so the camera knows what aperture is set. None of the product photos show that, but maybe they're not actually the Nikon version. Can anyone confirm the Nikon version does work with the camera's AI?
Asked by: John R R.
I use the lens almost exclusively with my D3 in manual mode. The metering works just fine. I have had no issues with the camera adjusting when in aperture priority setting, either. The lens is entirely manual, so it's just like shooting in the old days. Hope this helps.

Not sure if Lynn's baby makes a version that goes directly to Sony M Mount. This version is for Canon EF mount, so you would need an adapter for your Sony.

question

I understand this lens is totally manual. How does one obtain aperture settings?
Asked by: Van
This is a manual lens. You select the f stop on the ring closest to the camera body on the lens and the focus on the larger ring. The camera needs to be set on Manual or Aperture priority mode (M or Av on Canon). As the camera has no control on the aperture, the viewer will get darker as you increase the f stop (decrease the size of the aperture). I would suggest to focus at the lowest f stop (brightest) and then increase the f stop to the desired effect. The shutter speed and ISO will need to be adjusted to allow proper exposure (would be automatic on Aperture mode and Manual on the M mode). Do not use Shutter speed priority (Tv mode on Canon) as the camera will not be able to control the Aperture.
