Oben MFR4-5 Overview

The MFR4-5 Macro Focusing Rail from Oben is a lightweight macro stage designed for precise 4-way camera alignment. Its ability to make small incremental adjustments is ideal for close-up work, tilt-shift or macro-photography.

The MFR4-5 provides 2.75" of maximum front to back movement and 1.25" of maximum left to right movement controlled by dual-level adjustment knobs. The two angles of movement are controlled by independent top and bottom rails which may be separated using the included Allen key. This allows the top rail to be used alone as a front-to-back macro rail.

The rail is also equipped with an integrated Arca-type compatible quick release clamp and an included Arca-type plate. The plate uses a 1/4"-20 screw mount compatible with most cameras. The rail can also be mounted on most tripods by utilizing the built-in 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 tripod mounting threads. A durable aluminum construction provides smooth operation for extended use and keeps the unit lightweight at only 1.3 lb.

Is the maximum load really 1.6 pounds as stated in the manual? That would be only for compact cameras, wouldn't it?

It works just fine with a Canon 5DIII and a 700-200 f2.8. No problems at all. Also, it works with my Arca-Swiss QR plates.

can I attach to a RRS BH-40 ball head?

I assume the ball head has Arca Swiss clamps. If you add a Arca Swiss adapter like you would to a camera body yes you can. I mount mine to a Manfroto 410 geared head all with Arca Swiss style mounting. Or as others have said mount directly with 1/4-20. Focusing rail has female thread

You could try putting it on a table top. But it was designed to be used on a tripod. (Maybe a tabletop tripod would do the trick, as Jeremy suggested.)

Does this come with an Oben (or Arca) quick release plate?

It comes with a QRP but will accept some other plates but it doesn't seem to fit the Arca plates I have. The plate that it comes with works quite well and will allow moving the camera side to side with screws that stop it from sliding off.

It can be mounted on any device that has a 1/4-20 mounting screw. If you remove the adapter from the underside of the rail mount, a standard 3/8-16 mounting screw will also work.

Can the top plate (ARCA) be turned 90 degrees to support lens mount foot?

I contacted Oben Gear concerning your inquiry. According to the manufacturer, they state that "Unfortunately, you are not able to turn the quick release on this 90°; the reason being is the notches on the bottom are a bit to short going the other way, so they don’t fully match the protruding part on the head."
