Oben MFR4-5 overview

  • 1Description

The MFR4-5 Macro Focusing Rail from Oben is a lightweight macro stage designed for precise 4-way camera alignment. Its ability to make small incremental adjustments is ideal for close-up work, tilt-shift or macro-photography.

The MFR4-5 provides 2.75" of maximum front to back movement and 1.25" of maximum left to right movement controlled by dual-level adjustment knobs. The two angles of movement are controlled by independent top and bottom rails which may be separated using the included Allen key. This allows the top rail to be used alone as a front-to-back macro rail.

The rail is also equipped with an integrated Arca-type compatible quick release clamp and an included Arca-type plate. The plate uses a 1/4"-20 screw mount compatible with most cameras. The rail can also be mounted on most tripods by utilizing the built-in 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 tripod mounting threads. A durable aluminum construction provides smooth operation for extended use and keeps the unit lightweight at only 1.3 lb.

    Oben MFR4-5 reviews

MFR4-5 Macro Focusing Rail is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great macro rail for money, but..... The bad ... When I received the Oben Macro Rail I found that some of the slide rails were loose causing the movement to be unstable. The rails are held in place by 8 tamper resistant screw caps for which I have yet to find a wrench anywhere to tighten them. Using some needle nose pliers I eventually tightened all 8 caps The good .... With the rails now tight the movement is very smooth and stable allowing fine tuning of focus and horizontal alignment at 1:1 with my 60mm macro mounted to an Olympus em1. If it had not been for the loose rails and no tool to tighten them I would have given the Oben Macro Rail 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Giot my money's worth on this one I've always shot macro handheld & MF, but my back, knees, etc., just can't handle it any more. Not to mention my eyes. This rail gives me a lot more control than I ever had and just makes life easier.. The build quality seems very good, nice and solid. Although there were some loose screws, etc, right out of the box. This kind of unit provides extra control, but with that comes a loss of mobility. Since this unit has adjustment in 2 dimensions it minimizes that a bit. Overall I'm quite pleased with my purchase. I'm using it with a Sony A99 II body with full time live view and focus peaking, so it's fairly easy to nail focus. And a good tripod/head is a must, obviously.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value at this Price I just received this macro rail and I am very happy with it. It is identical to another brand except that this one uses an Arca-Swiss plate (Yes, my other Arca-Swiss plates fit well in the clamp.)while the other one uses just a screw, and its retail price is about $ less! The upper and lower parts can be separated, and the lower (screw-actuated, more precise) stage can be easily adapted to an Arca type clamp. This gives me a choice of two different single stages or one X-Y stage for the price of one. Like a lot of macro shooters, I am a bit of a tinkerer, so I see lots of possibilities. This rail does not appear to use oil, so that potential mess is avoided. It appears to be very well made. While there may be more precise, stronger, and more durable macro rails available, I have found them to be a LOT more expensive. I believe this is an excellent rail, and very well worth the price. The only feature I would add is an Arca-Swiss adapted base.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor workmanship in manufacture The short cross slide works as expected, but the longer dimension slide is difficult to position due to the poorly manufactured plastic helical gears inside the unit. Each 360 degree rotation of the control knob has about 1/3 of the rotation where the gears are not meshing properly and they bind up. This makes it almost unusable and will lead to its early failure due to unneeded wear of the helical gears. Apparently , one or both of the helical gears have high eccentricity, which can only be addressed by installing gears that do not. I plan to request a return on this item. Other than the issue with the gears, the item is well made. This problem should have been detected and addressed in quality control.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for the price I tried to use this as it came out of the box with no luck at all. I removed the side-to-side adjustment and it became much more stable, I also tightened up all the bushings and rails. It has helped to remove the spare battery grip from my camera just to lighten the load. It works well for use with a camera lens by its self and not bad for the lens with a Raynox magnifier installed on the front. At extreme magnifications with a microscope objective on the front of a 200mm micro Nikkor, it does not move in small enough increments nor is it any where close to stable enough. Works well for normal macro though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good gear for the price This is a basic, and useful tool for macro photography. While it may not be as polished as some other ones out there, it is a huge bang for the buck. The fore/aft rail has almost 3 inches of movement with about 360 click of the knob to cycle through the entire range. The left/right rail has about 2 inches of movement. The ability to use standard arca-swiss plates with one included is a huge plus. The mostly metal construction is a very nice feature for the price point. I ended up recommending this to a friend, and he promptly got one for him to use, and has been happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great well made bargain I have wanted a Macro Focus rail for quite some time, so when I saw this one on sale, I figured I would give it a try. I plan to use it to enhance my macro work and to also try focus stacking. After reading other reviews about the device having a tripod screw interface rather than an Arca Swiss interface I was a bit unsure it that would work for me. But I had a spare plate that easily attached to the rail, so it would mount right to my Markin's @)L ball head. But it got even better, because I was able to use the supplied plate on the top of the unit on my bellows focusing attachment that did not have a plate. All my other phot gear already has attached plates. So no additional money had to be spent. The rail adjustments work smoothly and the unit is well made. The ability to move the rail in 2 planes is a big plus. The unit comes with a tool set for adjusting and disassembling the rail into 2 pieces, a nice touch. In summary this is an affordable, well made focusing rail, that I have no problem recommending.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not the quality I was hoping for. The build quality on the one I received one was poor. The knob to adjust forward movement is very loose and jiggly and is placed awkwardly making it difficult to turn. The forward movement was not smooth. The horizontal knob and movement worked fine. Returned to B&H
