Vortex Media FGFS7 Overview

Filmmakers who use a Sony PXW-FS7 camcorder will benefit from Doug Jensen's Sony PXW-FS7 Field Guide from Vortex Media. This portable guide is loaded with essential information and step-by-step instructions that save you the trouble of figuring out things on your own or searching online for answers that are often wrong or incomplete.

With a no-nonsense style, Jensen demystifies the camera and explains its major functions, then gives you step-by-step guidance on its use, along with plenty of tips, warnings, and practical advice. His suggestions and advanced techniques will help you improve the quality of your footage and streamline your workflow for greater efficiency and productivity. No matter how well you think you know your camera, you're likely to discover new things and learn how to avoid pitfalls.

While not intended as an A to Z examination of the FS7's every aspect, this guide covers the camera's most important features and functions. Each chapter stands on its own, so you can learn a specific function or perform a new task as quickly as possible. The book also serves as a hard-copy companion to "Doug Jensen's Sony PXW-FS7 Master Class," a 6-hour instructional video from Vortex Media.

and I'd rather have a book I can hold forever than a Vimeo-streaming version for a 6 month pass.

Great Overview

This book is a must have if you own an FS7. I keep it in the bag with the camera for now. It got me started with an understanding of SLog and the various matrix settings and what operations weren't compatible with each other. Plan on signing on to his online video series to further my knowledge of this great camera to get the most out of it.

question

Good for info on shooting flat and MLUTS? I'm looking at this book and Doug Jensen's Master Class on Vimeo. I'm basically trying to figure out which one to buy as I don't need or want both. I'd rather buy the less expensive book if it has the info I need. What I'm really looking for is some clarification on Cine EI and S-Log and it's function, MLUTs and Look Profiles and scene files and how they operate. I've been working with Sony cameras for a long time. Most of the operation is all very familiar to me, but I'm new to shooting flat and I don't really understand how one thing affects another when it comes to MLUTS and s-log, etc. Any help in making a decision would be greatly appreciated.

We bought the book after watching Doug Jensen's Master Class on video. The book we find is very helpful to refer to after you've watched the video segments. Do you need both? We felt that we did and the book is a handy reference to take with you, even on location in case you need to refer to something. Much easier to carry around than the video.

question

Is this book the second edition that covers v.2 update for the camera?
Asked by: Robert S.
As far as I know, there is not updated version, just like his series of FS7 instructional videos on YouTube, he say there may be minor updates from Sony, however the basics are still in effect. You can write to Doug himself by googling his address via Vortex Media.
