Samyang 12mm f/2.8 Fisheye Overview

The 12mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye Lens for Nikon F Mount with AE Chip from Samyang provides a 180º diagonal angle of view on full-frame cameras for an ultra-wide angle, distorted perspective that is useful for architectural interiors, landscapes and creative experimentation in any photographic application. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low-light situations and enables some measure of shallow depth of field control.

The lens's sophisticated optical design consists of 12 lens elements arranged in 8 groups including three elements made of low dispersion ED glass and two aspherical lens elements to minimize coma and chromatic aberrations. The Nano Coating System (NCS) lowers reflections to provide increased contrast. Its internal focus system enables its compact design and keeps the front element from extending during focus.

As a manual focus, manual aperture lens, it offers a wide, easy to grip focus ring and bright aperture, distance and depth of field markings. A removable petal-shaped lens hood and a carrying pouch are included.

An ultra wide-angle fisheye lens with a 12mm focal length on full-frame cameras and an 18mm equivalency when used on APS-C format cameras. Its distorted perspective is useful for interiors, landscapes, group shots and many creative wide-angle applications.
AE chip capabilities include focus confirmation with fine tuning, exposure modes Auto/P/A/S/M and EXIF data.
Extra low dispersion and aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations for sharp, color-accurate imaging.
Manual focus lens with an internal focus system and wide, rubberized focus ring.
Manual aperture control with bright markings for aperture, distance and depth of field.
Sturdy metal barrel with removable petal-shaped lens hood.

I bought the Samyang 12mm fisheye because I wanted a full frame fisheye for creative work and it fulfilled all my expectations. It has just the right amount of distortion for creative work and yet can be used for conventional photos and scenes. It works with all exposure modes on my Nikon and the price was right.

Absolutely worth the purchase!

This lens is SO affordable, high quality and has captured spaces and people exactly how I wanted it to and imagined it would. If you're on the fence about this lens I say you should definitely go for it. You won't be disappointed.

I had doubts about how sharp this less expensive lens might be but to my delight its as sharp as can be from edge to edge! And talk about wide....180 degrees! I've used it for night shots downtown and was blown away by the great color and contrast.

I'm so glad I bought this lens because it has opened up new photographic opportunities for me and will enable me to take pictures I had previously wondered how they could have been done. The price is right and the AE chip allows me to use all of the exposure modes on my Nikon D610. Additionally, it features full frame coverage that enables me to produce superior compositions. You do have to be careful when using this lens because of the protruding front element and must take care not to damage it and to keep the provided front lens cover on when not using it. The amount of distortion produced is just right and can be a valuable compositional tool.

Great Addition

Yes, the Samyang 12mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye Lens for Nikon F Mount with AE Chip would be compatible for use with the Nikon D500 DSLR camera. Do note that the above lens is designed for the full-frame sensor, so when used on the APS-C sensor in the Nikon D500, the lens would have an equivalent focal length of an 18mm lens used on a full-frame camera. Also, do note this is a fully manual lens, so you will have to focus the lens manually and set the aperture using the aperture ring built onto the lens, and not the control dials built onto the camera. That being said, manual focus confirmation, automatic exposure information and EXIF data should still be transmitted when using this lens.

I'm still curious as to why the aperture ring has to be turned all the way to f/22 for the Nikon F mount lens to work. Won't the image quality be compromised due to the smaller physical iris set in the lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
If you want AE on a Nikon, set the aperture to f/22. Then the camera will open to whatever stop is needed. That is how things work in Nikon land.
