Samyang 12mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The 12mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye Lens for Nikon F Mount with AE Chip from Samyang provides a 180º diagonal angle of view on full-frame cameras for an ultra-wide angle, distorted perspective that is useful for architectural interiors, landscapes and creative experimentation in any photographic application. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low-light situations and enables some measure of shallow depth of field control.

The lens's sophisticated optical design consists of 12 lens elements arranged in 8 groups including three elements made of low dispersion ED glass and two aspherical lens elements to minimize coma and chromatic aberrations. The Nano Coating System (NCS) lowers reflections to provide increased contrast. Its internal focus system enables its compact design and keeps the front element from extending during focus.

As a manual focus, manual aperture lens, it offers a wide, easy to grip focus ring and bright aperture, distance and depth of field markings. A removable petal-shaped lens hood and a carrying pouch are included.

An ultra wide-angle fisheye lens with a 12mm focal length on full-frame cameras and an 18mm equivalency when used on APS-C format cameras. Its distorted perspective is useful for interiors, landscapes, group shots and many creative wide-angle applications.
AE chip capabilities include focus confirmation with fine tuning, exposure modes Auto/P/A/S/M and EXIF data.
Extra low dispersion and aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations for sharp, color-accurate imaging.
Manual focus lens with an internal focus system and wide, rubberized focus ring.
Manual aperture control with bright markings for aperture, distance and depth of field.
Sturdy metal barrel with removable petal-shaped lens hood.

    Samyang 12mm f/2.8 reviews

12mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye Lens for Nikon F Mount with AE Chip is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from fully satisfied! This lens is truly amazing. It is sharp and the color is superb. I am a fussy lens buyer, too. Do not let the low price put you off. It is well made. Although a fisheye, the aspherical aspect makes the distortion manageable. The only fisheye distortion is in the vertical plane when shooting horizontally and vice versa. We will certainly be seeing more great products from Samyang (using various names around the world including Rokinon). Focus confirmation and camera-controlled aperture make this a truly modern lens. How often do you need autofocus with a lens this wide? I love looking for artistic uses for this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good lens for the price I purchased this lens to take photographs inside of caves and to take photographs to be stitched together to make virtual tours for our local history museum. The image quality was good. I did not have any problems mounting the lens on my Nikon D810, even when I was holding the lens by the removable lens shade. The spring loaded lens cap was more secure that a simple push on lens cap. I just have to remember to keep the f-stop ring set at the maximum of F22 for the auto exposure to work correctly. It was good to see a metal lens mount. There is free software that can be downloaded from the internet to straighten out the curved lines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Sweet Lens! I had not owned a fisheye lens before. Finding the 180 degree field of view intriguing, I ordered one from B&H. Wow! This lens is so much fun to shoot that often it is the first lens pulled out of the bag during scenic shoots! It takes the plain into the realm of the imaginary. Manual focus, no problem! Oodles of depth of field. This lens is a must for any serious camera bag! Buy it! you'll love it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I do recommend this Lens The only reason it receives a 4.5 star is because the detachable lens hood has a loose fit, it does not snap in place. I will look at making a small modification so that it has a snugger fit. The lens itself is outstanding. great glass, nice weight. As for the pictures, well what can I say that hasn't been said yet. Take your time, look around, be open to sometimes taking 50 or more stills at different pitches at the same distance from the subject. Keeping the subject in the frame watch the back ground more, you will be surprise at the results. I have a lot more to learn. Sometime you just have to be in the right place at the right time, but remember, it's what you have captured that makes a good conversation piece while going through your snap shots. Even what you considered to be a bad snap shot could very well be what others may see as a great photo. This lens will give you all that and more. I'm having fun with this Fisheye Lens, I think you will also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creative tool I always wanted The Samyang 12mm f2.8 is amazing. I got this last week along with the Nikon D810. B&H staff helped me figure out the difference between this and my older ai Nikkor manual focus lenses. The difference is: the Samyang 12mm has a chip which interacts with the Nikon, using the camera aperture wheel to adjust iris. When mounting the 12mm (set front camera switch to MF) set aperture ring on lens to f-22. When mounting non-cpu, older ai F mount MF lenses, go to Menu/setup/Non CPU Lenses and enter the max f stop and focal length. Up to 9 lenses can be entered. Iris ring on lens used to change F stop visible in VF readout. Focus (beep) and in-focus match arrows in VF with all MF lenses. Terrific. The 12mm Samyang is very sharp, contrasty. The 180 degree view is a must experience. I have been having a blast with wildflower landscapes in the desert. I'm very glad I got this and the Tokina 24-70 f2.8 AF and not the 16-28. The combination, along with my older MF lenses is very nice package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressively sharp I was happy with how the images turned out, they are quite sharp and for a price tag less than $500, it's definitely a good buy. It doesn't auto focus, and manual focusing is easy to get used to, The AE chip works well when the lighting is good; under low light it doesn't work well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens offering a new view This is my first non-Nikon, manual focus lens. While certainly not as point&shoot as Nikon, it forms excellent images. This is also my first fish-eye lens which offers its own challenges. With 180 capture, I had several images with my own feet or hands in the images. Overall, I am very please with this lens and would recommend to more advanced users interested in adding new creativity to their photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read the reviews and didn't believe they were true. This product out delivered on any and all expectations. It is fun and easy to use, and for the money a great deal. I normally would never buy a brand that was not specific to my camera body, this was worth it.
