Samyang 50mm f/1.4 Overview

Utilizing a "normal" field of view and a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, the 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Sony E from Samyang is optimized for effective low light shooting, fast shutter speed capture and shallow depth of field control. It is compatible with full frame cameras and when used on cameras with an APS-C format sensor its 35mm focal length equivalence is 75mm.

The optical design of the lens consists of 9 elements in 6 groups including one hybrid aspherical element and one aspherical element to reduce chromatic aberrations. Also, lens elements are coated with an Ultra Multi-Coating to improve light transmission and minimize flare and ghosting. Eight diaphragm blades create a circular aperture for more attractive out-of-focus highlights.

As a manual focus and manual aperture lens, it provides a rubberized focus ring and clear aperture, distance and depth of field markings. Additionally, an included petal shape lens hood blocks unwanted light and protects the lens.

question

What's the difference between this lens and the Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC Lens? Since Rokinon is just another name for Samyang... same company.
Asked by: George
Rokinon and Samyang are almost identical companies, but very rarely their items can be different. It looks like Rokinon has released a new 50mm f/1.4 lens for Sony FE mount and Samyang has not yet. The Samyang lens is an older design the will still work for Sony FE cameras like the a7. But the Rokinon lens is newer and better quality. Samyang has a longer aperture range, from f/1.4 to 22, while Rokinon has f/1.4 to 16. Rokinon has three aspherical lens elements, Samyang only has one. And finally, Rokinon has a better-looking 9-blade aperture for background blur while Samyang has only 8 blades. Samyang may come out with the same lens in the future but for now Rokinon has it first.

question

What is the difference between this Samyang 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Sony E an the same one but it is AF?
Asked by: Different Perspective I.
These are both manual focus lenses and are essentially identical for they are made by the same company in the same factory. The Rokinon is a little nicer finished and probably has a better brand name resale value.

question

difference between The Samyang 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC and the Samyang VSLR II 50mm T1.5 Full Frame Cine Lens besides the un-clicked iris?
Asked by: Dave
The lenses are pretty much the same optically. In addition to the de-clicked focus and aperture control ring difference the other differences in the VDSLR lenses are the same alignment of their geared focus and aperture rings so that follow focus and other rig accessories won't need re-adjustment when swapping lenses. Also, each lens is tested to be color matched with the other lenses in the series and provide the same color and contrast when shooting video. Lastly, the lenses are marked with focusing scales on each side of the barrel for easier adjustment from both sides of the camera.
