Lomography Z230C overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its swirly bokeh and sharp central focus, the brass Petzval 85mm f/2.2 Lens from Lomography for Canon EF-mount cameras is an updated design of the first Petzval lens from 1840. Sharing much of the distinct image quality from the classic optic, as well as the unique brass exterior, this version has been updated for use on modern DSLRs and film SLRs and features Russian multi-coated glass to deliver a high degree of sharpness, contrast, and color saturation while maintaining the unique field curvature, vignetting, and shallow depth of field of the original lens. Aperture settings are controlled using seven different Waterhouse stops, ranging from f/2.2 to f/16, and a geared rack focusing mechanism affords precise manual focus control as close as 3.3' away. Harking back to the origins of photography, this optic meshes an ethereal, soft, and distinctive image quality with contemporary handling to provide a unique option for portraiture and other creative applications.

Contemporary iteration of the classic Petzval lens from 1840, this lens produces a distinctive swirly bokeh with a high degree of central sharpness, contrast, and color saturation.
A standard portrait-length lens, this Canon EF version is compatible with full-frame sensors and 35mm film, as well as APS-C sensors where it will provide a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Seven drop-in style Waterhouse stops, ranging from f/2.2 to f/16, are included for aperture and depth of field control, and are inserted into the middle of the lens prior to making an exposure. Additionally, a blank protective plate is also included for keeping in the lens during travel or storage.
Constructed from Russian multi-coated glass, this lens' optical design maintains its classical appearance with notable field curvature, inherently shallow depth of field, and vignetting towards the edges of the frame, while providing a high degree of sharpness and contrast for use with modern DSLRs and film types.
Brass outer design resembles the classic appearance of the first Petzval lens.
Manual geared rack focus control allows you to focus as closely as 3.3' away.
In addition to the lens and seven Waterhouse stops, a blank protective plate, Petzval book, leather pouch, cleaning cloth, and brass lens cap are also included.

    Lomography Z230C reviews

Petzval 85mm f/2.2 Lens for Canon EF (Brass) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful inside and out! This lens is truly beautiful! Heavy and great quality lens. I don't have to tell you how cool it looks either. If I ever tire of using this lens, it will be prominently displayed in my studio as a piece of art. I put manual focus as a pro and con, because it is for me. But when you hit the sweet spot with this lens, at a full 2.2, it is magical. Also, it's just a great 85mm art lens, all special effects aside.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unique bokeh and bonus film-y look I bought the lens primarily to use for weddings and boudoir shoots, hoping that the swirly bokeh would give my work a distinctive look. It delivers. A boost is that also achieves a film-y look that I really like. As in, even when the image is sharp, the sharpness is still soft and milky, and when I process it in Lightroom the way I like, I think it looks as film-ish as one can get using digital. I like it. I give it 4 stars, though, because for how often I've found myself using it, it's not worth the price. Also, I primarily shoot primes at 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6, so I really wish this lens opened up more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfull Art Lens Follow the tips provided to get off to a good start. At 1:2.2 very bright in direct sunlight, may push some cameras to it lowest ISO and max. shutter speed, so ND filters can be needed to get fully beautiful blur or if you need a slower shutter speed. Using shutter speed or ISO settings to get exposure or set ISO to auto and use shutter speed. Focus can be tricky with such a narrow field of focus but by slight adjusting the camera back and forward will get it. The brass lens hood is best removed by placing the palm of your hand and push & turn to loosen or the hood will squeeze the treads and act like breaks. All together a well built piece.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Petzval for Canon - currently undecided I am currently undecided about this lens. After my initial experience with it, I decided I just needed another round of shooting to become familiar with it. I've now shot with it multiple times and am no better off. While I purchased it for the background distortion and soft focus effect, this is (so far) to the extreme. I have shot over 1,000 images and not a single one is in-focus (even the subject I was focusing on that appeared 100% in-focus on the camera is not focused in the image itself). My other lenses do not cause this effect. I'm going to play with it more and report back in a week or two, but for now I'm not content with the purchase as I haven't obtained a single working image with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Special This very retro experience simply removed me out of my normal comfort zone and forced me to figure out the photographic art from scratch. You deposit the aperture plates through a slot in the lens and go from there. Not everything works like normal, and some smaller aperture holes are still a mystery. I've had some gorgeous results with the big circles

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I was in love...then it fell apart I was in love with this Lens for two weeks. We toured New Orleans, and then Havana Cuba together; the Pictures were fantastic...until it fell apart. The Focus Mechanism, fell off. Upon further investigation, it appears to have been attached with only two of the four Screws. Disappointed in the craftsmanship, not the Pictures.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cool effect but its an effect you can add in photoshop I've had this lens for a while. I found it to be extremely interesting and the effect it adds is awesome. The problem I have with the lens is that I have now had this lens for about a year. I have used it very few times. It also takes a lot of time to find that sweet spot with the lens to get the desired effect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cool Lens Great amazing product. You really need to know what you are doing and how to use the lens for it to actually be worth the money however.
