Voigtlander BA213M overview

  • 1Description

Realizing a truly wide perspective, the Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III Lens from Voigtlander features an updated design that is enhanced for use on mirrorless digital cameras as well as classic M-mount rangefinder film cameras. The 11-elements-in-9-groups optical design incorporates one rear aspherical element to control chromatic aberrations and minimize distortion, and also helps to produce consistent peripheral illumination void of color fringing. The manual focus design affords a minimum focusing distance of 1.6', which pairs with the wide depth of field for sharp imaging from near to far. Rounding out this versatile, super-wide optic is an integrated lens hood to reduce lens flare and ghosting, rounded 10-blade diaphragm, and the ability to accept 58mm screw-in filters.

Wide-angle 15mm f/4.5 lens offers a 110° angle of view and is compatible with full-frame digital and 35mm film M-mount cameras.
Updated design helps to maintain consistent peripheral illumination and eliminate color fringing, making it ideal for use with mirrorless digital cameras.
One aspherical element helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion.
Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 1.6'.
Built-in, non-removable lens hood helps to prevent lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strongly lit conditions.

    Voigtlander BA213M reviews

Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III Lens is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superior Lens, buy it without thinking twice I used Nikon for 40 years and I still do. My main camera is the D800E. Recently I bought a Leica M and wanted something wider than my Summicron but after spending $$for body and one lens I wanted to keep my budget low. After reading all the reviews (most of them based on version 1 & 2) I decided to try this 15mm Voigtlander and I'm shocked by the sharpness I'm getting with this lens. I don't know if I've been just lucky but it's a very, very good lens. Build quality is up there with Leica and Sharpness is up there as well. I tested the lens fully open and it is as sharp as a lens can be. Vignetting is very limited considering the type of lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lot of punch for this small lens I have been using this lens on my Sony A7RII and find it to be quite remarkable. For wide angle focal lengths-- I had the Leica WATE and never considered anything else. However, after trying this lens-- I am sold. The Voigtlander 15mm Heliar is stellar and is a bite sharper corner to corner than my WATE. It is also small and easy to carry in a small bag. Using filters is also easier than what was needed for the WATE. Some have complained the lens is slow at f4.5 but for super wide shots, not important for me. Also if I use in combination with the VM close up adapter-- I can get very close and even use at macro distances. This is a clear winner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic addition to any serious kit I had to decide between this lens and a 0.95 50mm and decided that shallow DOF is overrated these days. I definitely don't regret this purchase. Although the vignetting is a bit more than I would have liked, it can be corrected in post. The most magical thing about this lens is the wonderful lack of fisheye bulging and beuatiful straight lines on perspective angles. I use mine as a filmmaker and you can get exceptionally good wide angle shots, including the point perspective shots that make Kubrick famous. Coupled with the Hawk's helicoid adapter, I am getting fantastic footage on my A7s/A7rii!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens with the Sony A7Rii Great Ultra wide angle lens for landscape. Tack sharp and low distortion. Have not tried it for astrophotography yet, but expect great results with the high ISO low noise sensor of the Sony A7Rii. If using for astrophotography with a slower camera you may get star trails while trying to preserve picture quality using lower ISO. Do your homework if this is the primary purpose for getting the lens. Excellent lens for the money. I also use it with the Voigtlander VM-E Close Focus Adapter. This allows some very nice ultra wide angle macro pictures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best travel lens for at A7 series...ever! I purchased this lens just before a 3-week trip to Spain and Portugal this past May (2015), and it proved difficult to get it off my A7 for any other lens except - in certain circumstances - the FE 35mm f2.8 (faster and AF when desired). There is virtually no vignetting and no edge/corner smearing at all on the A7, unlike prior generations of this lens. In fact, the lens correction in the latest version of Lightroom 6 actually overcorrects for vignetting, and must be dialed back (darkened), It is incredibly sharp, even wide open, and virtually no chromatic issues, even when shooting bright/dark edge subjects. There is some edge distortion that can be detected when you have people or some geometric subjects near the very extreme edges, but it is correctible in Lightroom using the distortion slider in manual lens correction. The lens is very easy to focus using Sony's image peaking - best done with the setting to low because otherwise, everything lights up because at f4.5, everything will be sharp from roughly 3-5 meters to infinity. It is easy to hand-hold this lens at very low shutter speeds - as low as 1/3rd second if you are good at steadying yourself - 1/10 to 1/13th for sure. High ISO sensors means you don't need a bigger aperture, and the incredible depth of field of a 15mm lens means AF is totally useless. Mechanically, you are talking about a lens that competes seriously with Leica M mounts (I have 3). Focusing is smooooth as a Leica lens. This is not surprising, since Voigtlander lenses are made by Cosina, the Japanese firm that makes virtually all Zeiss primes like the Touit, Loxia, Batis etc. This lens is simply fantastic in cathedrals, for landscapes, for architecture (as long as you are careful to shoot it level. It's simply a great lens at a reasonable price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceeded expectations I had heard good things about this lens but I wasn't sure how it would fit with my style of shooting since I usually use a 50mm. I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw in the camera and when I later examined the images on a larger screen I was amazed at the sharpness of the images this lens produced. Construction and usability are very good. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So glad I went wide! I purchased this lens to use with my Sony A7r for landscape and architectural photography, and had previously owned the version II lens, but had to sell it as the vignetting and fringing was way too much for me to deal with. I couldn't be happier with the results that I'm getting from the this version III on my Sony! It's a bit heavier than the previous version, although still a small lens, definitely worth the trade off.
