Manfrotto MVDDA14 overview

  • 1Description

Control your Nikon or Canon DSLR from the Digital Director for iPad Air 2 from Manfrotto. The Digital Director is an advanced tether solution comprised of three main components: a user-supplied iPad, an Apple Certified Digital Director iPad holder with a built-in microprocessor, and the Digital Director App. These three components work together seamlessly to provide you with control over your camera's still and video functions right from the iPad.

The heart of the Digital Director is the iPad holder which is customized to securely fit the iPad Air 2 and features a lock to prevent accidental release. The iPad slips into the holder and the Lightning connector provides communication between the iPad and the built-in ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz microprocessor, and a USB cable connects the unit to the camera. The processor allows for real-time live view monitoring when shooting stills or videos, as well as fast download speeds when transferring full size JPEGs from the camera's memory card to the iPad.

Digital Director App
  • The intuitive iPad application controls key functions of your Nikon or Canon DSLR camera such as focus point, exposure, aperture and shutter speed.
  • The app provides real-time live view monitoring, manual focus control with focus peaking, and touchscreen point autofocus.
  • Interactive Focus can be used to select the focus point anywhere on the iPad's screen. Digital zoom magnifies the selected focus point to ensure crisp and accurate focus.
  • A toolbar shows histograms, exposure controls, focus controls, color temperature, the shutter button, and audio levels when shooting video. In full-screen mode the floating toolbar can be moved anywhere on the screen, and the individual control can be opened and flicked away to remove on-screen clutter.
  • Image star ratings allow you to sort images, and the app can organize them into albums, shoot profiles, and connection profiles.
  • Download full-size JPEGs to the iPad and adjust the image's exposure, contrast, and light. You can also crop and rotate the image, check the histogram and EXIF data. Once complete, you can share your edited images via FTP, Email, or on social networks directly from your iPad's camera roll.
  • The app allows you to choose between single shot mode or continuous mode using the large shutter button on the iPad screen.
  • A plug-in for Adobe Lightroom is available to help import additional Digital Director metadata from images taken while using the Digital Director.
  • Digital Director iPad Holder
  • The Digital Director consists of a custom-fit frame to fit the iPad Air 2 and an electronic interface with an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz microprocessor. The frame is user-replaceable so that it maintains compatibility with future iPads.
  • A 3/8"-16 female thread allows the holder to attach to a variety of supports, and two notches to match up with Manfrotto's anti-twist mounts.
  • Four cold shoe mounts on the back of the Digital Director are provided for attaching various accessories.
  • The holder is powered by four user-supplied AA batteries or by the included AC adapter, which includes four international adapters: North America, Italy, Germany, and UK.
  • The Digital Director connects to the camera via the USB port and up to a 32.8' USB cable.
  • Camera Compatibility

    Manfrotto MVDDA14 reviews

Digital Director for iPad Air 2 and Nikon and Canon DSLR Cameras is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Error message Had problems connecting ipad to device. Read previous review about issues and considered a return. Then I remember updating the iPad operating system. If running iOS 9 you need to update the firmware on the digital director. Download and instructions for updating firmware are on the Manfrotto website. Works fine now. Would like to see a little better build quality for the money.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Long Latency I wanted to use my iPad as a field monitor so I thought this would do the trick. The built-in processor made it seem it would have little or no lag at all. I'm mostly a run-n-gun shooter so I need as little lag as possible. I was very disappointed. My 6D has tolerable lag on its LCD but the lag on the DD was much longer and I was unable to use my rig to follow action or pull focus. I shot a video of the lag with a second camera and sent it to Manfrotto. Their Category Manager, Thomas Howley, told me to go buy a monitor system if I didn't find the DD fast enough. I have seen videos online where the latency is acceptable but apparently not with all cameras they list as compatible. If you search Vimeo, Manfrotto Digital Director lag with 6D you will see the footage. I think this is for still use only.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not ready for prime time! I received this hoping to replace my CamRanger. I liked the idea that I could tether with USB from my new Canon 5DS R, which is supposed to work with this. It would not pull focus properly. Then I connected my Canon 5D MK II and the same problem occurred. Called US tech support over a week ago, never heard back. Nice people at their tech support, but this is not the first time Manfrotto US tech support has not called back with an answer. Way to expensive to be still in retail/beta form. Fit and finish is good, but it just did not play nice with the cameras I listed, yet their website states these cameras work......NOT! I returned mine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly but Requires firmware update The product won't work stright from the box. It requires a manual firmware update. Please read the instruction on the manfrotto website. It works as advertise and the only con from me is the plastic body( feels and look flimsy).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great! I have been using the Manfrotto Digital Director for the iPad Air 2 for the last three months and have found it to be an invaluable tool in my workflow. I primarily shoot macro images and had been somewhat frustrated using both the LCD on my camera as well as using tethering to my laptop. The limitations of a camera back LCD becomes plainly obvious once one starts shooting with the MDD. The MDD allows me to control virtually every function of the camera including the ability to dynamically change the point of focus for the shot I want. In addition, the MDD uses focus peaking technology, thus permitting acquisition of images with maximal sharpness. This feature allows for capture of detail of flower elements and other biological specimens such as insects. This is a macro photographer's dream. The device is lightweight and highly portable; it can run when plugged into an outlet or with batteries for field use. At home, I secure it to a tabletop setup. In the field, I secure it to the tripod leg and this has worked terrifically well. The MDD is also a wonderful tool for those who shoot video. The live view, large screen provides the ability to capture the scenes in realtime in a remote manner. The user interface is intuitive and well laid out. I have had a noticeable improvement in the quality of my images. The MDD is well worth the cost and provides features not found on any other device.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not suitable for video. I was excited reading about this product, and watched dozens of youtube videos showcasing it. Once it arrived it did require a quick firmware update right out of the box to get it to work. I was instantly disappointed with it's performance. While panning around in video-mode I noticed a significant lag. Even worse was the choppiness of the motion. It appears to be running at 15fps. I called Manfrotto Tech support and they were very helpful and confirmed the lag and choppiness in video mode is a limitation of it's USB connectivity. Even though I did lots of reading and researching before I purchased I realized after the fact I never saw live footage of the app while the camera was moving/panning. For this reason I can't recommend it to anyone looking to use it for video. Thank you B&H for your excellent service and return policy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome device & support! I had preordered the Digital Director so I was one of the first to be playing around with it. It worked perfectly out of the box with my Canon 70D strictly for professional videography. I had upgraded to an iPad Air 2 just prior to the unit arriving and support was able to swap my device for the proper model easily. It's only a slight case alignment to fit snuggly but they still shipped a new model and prepaid information for sending back my other device. I simply clicked on their Contact Us link under support on their product page to reach out to them. They followed up their email response with a phone call also to ensure everything was handled professionally. And when the Digital Director app was updated and the device failed to establish a connection because the firmware needed to be updated, all it took was another simple email to their support again and within 24hrs I had instructions and a link on how to do that followed up by a phone a call to ensure my issue was resolved. I've since had some questions about some future features I'd like to see and always within 24hrs support is contacting me back with advice and/or suggestions. I couldn't be happier with this device. It makes shooting videos an entirely different experience and only enhances what I can do now for my clients. The multiple support members from Manfrotto have all been excellent & extremely knowledge too. Thank you!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Digital Director communication fix If your new Digital Director doesn't communicate with your camera when first plugged in, which happened to me when I hooked my new purchase into my new Nikon D610. This was fixed when I updated the firmware - a solution I didn't see in the manual.
