ProMediaGear BBX2-PBX3BD Overview

With its adjustable flash arm, the right-handed black ProMediaGear BBX2 Boomerang Flash Bracket fits most DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It features a unique 90° rotating design that allows the flash to remain upright when shooting in either horizontal or vertical orientations, and it folds down for compact carrying. Facilitating the movement from 0 to 90°, rotational bearings help to provide smooth movement and a quick transition between both shooting positions. Also, this right-handed version places the bracket on the right side of the camera for convenient access and control.

The bracket attaches to the camera via an Arca-type compatible quick release plate. This connection method affords more room between the bracket and the camera while also providing unrestricted access to the camera's battery compartment. A user-supplied compatible flash cord is necessary for operation.

This unit is solid and easy to configure. Decide if you want your right hand facing up or down in the vertical position when you choose right or left handed.

Great product in need of good directions

This thing is built like a tank. I took it on a birding trip after I got it and it is made to last for generations. There is some clever engineering that went into it as well including onboard storage for one of the hex keys that are needed to work it. Unfortunately there are multiple sizes of hex key needed - so I still have to carry a bag. Oh well - I have room in my camera bag for such a tiny piece of extra kit. This is somewhat non-intuitive to unfold and configure the first time. Once you get it you will really understand - but the included directions are not great. I get that a 2d medium can make it hard to portray a 3d object - particularly in motion. ProMediaGear does have a YouTube channel - but there are a TON of videos out there and a seemingly endless array of these brackets - each with a slightly different methodology. Made it incredibly difficult to find the right video and I actually figured it all out before I found the correct video (almost all of it - missed the height adjuster). Placing a QR Code on the outside of the box that takes you straight to the video about how to put it together and use it would be outstanding. Putting the same code on the instructions would be great as well. I think most people could figure it out within a few minutes - but why not do the link? The video actually presents some features and benefits I might not have used otherwise. Regardless of all of the above - this is a well built product. If you do event photography or BiF photos then this is a great investment and given the quality - it seems like it will be a one time investment.

This is the only flash bracket I've used, so can't compare, but it certainly works as advertised. It looks good (red!), too! The three things I liked most are 1) how adaptable it is. With simple adjustments, I was able to align the flash for two very different sized cameras and battery grip on or off; 2) how easy and secure the flip is. It's fast and works perfectly--no worry of flash flopping the wrong way; and 3) how compact it is when folded flat. Two things that surprised me were size and weight. It's much smaller than it looks in the pictures but sized just about right for a balance of flash offset and reasonable handling. It's also very lightweight. The added weight is negligible compared to a full frame gripped body, large lens, flash, and flash controller. OK, a few things that aren't awesome: 1) The universal plate that comes with it is a little too wide for my mirrorless cameras when used without battery grip. If not careful how I mount it, it'll press up on the bottom of the flippy LCD. I guess that's why they sell custom plates (for another 50 bucks); 2) the kickstand is a neat idea, but not that useful in practice. It really only worked well with one body/lens combination I tried, and even then I found it much better to just lay the whole rig on its side rather than trying to make it stand upright; 3) this version 2 model does not have the thumb screw to quickly connect or remove the arm from the base plate (the B&H photos still show the old model.) While I'm sure this makes things sleeker (and more secure?), it means that it really doesn't make sense to pop the bracket off while leaving the plate connected to the camera. I was hoping to just pop the bracket on and off when needed and just leave the Arca plate on the camera all the time (and maybe add the option L-bracket to that), but it doesn't really work that way; and 4) although it works in portrait mode (the whole reason for getting a tilting bracket!) with a battery grip camera, the base and lower arm do make gripping the camera by the grip a bit awkward. OK, I guess I listed more negatives than positives! Huh? I'm being picky. The thing really is great at doing what it's designed for, and I give it 5 stars for that. It's just that some of the bonus features aren't quite as great as I had hoped for.

Light weight tank

I do not use the flash much, but when I need to take a family portrait or photo of a project, I need everything to feel solid and not have any slop or flop in the setup. I have not had this very long, but my initial impression is the PMG BBX Boomerang Flash Bracket locks into place and doesn't move unless I want it to move. Rotating the camera from portrait to landscape while keeping the flash on top is as easy as pressing a lever. It's a good fit for me.

Used this bracket recently in a five hour photo event. Never had an issue. If your looking for a solid flash bracket that you can depend on I highly recommend. Not cheap, well worth the price. Everything stayed tight and secure. Worry free with this bracket!

Very mixed feelings about this bracket

Good: Well built, good horizonatal/vertical control Bad: Very bad placement of tripod screw that needs an allen wrench or screwdriver to adjust or remove from the camera. There is a magnetic slot for allen wrench storage but unless another tool is carried, there is no way to get this wrench out of this slot. Another tool is also needed to remove the screws holding the arm to the camera plate, and no place to store it or the screws. There are too many different sized screws used all over the bracket fo adjustments. The flash plate borders on being too small, thus resulting in the flash falling out if not careful when removing it from that plate. In order to make this $300 bracket suitable and complete, another hundred dollars or so needs to be spent on accessories (such as custom camera plates, a thumb screw instead of that mentioned tripod screw, etc). All in all, a very well built but very poorly engineered bracket that takes nickel and diming in order to get right.

You actually dont hold the bracket while shooting. Just hold the camera and lens the way you normally would. To flip the bracket, PMG recommends reaching across with the left hand, squeezing the release, and then rotating the camera underneath. Works good!

Is this a good flash bracket for wildlife photography? Someone recommended it, but I am not sure how it will work with a Better Beamer. Most of the articles I saw had this picture attached to the Gimbal head. I am not sure if it will work as well attached to the camera. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

It gets you farther away from the camera which helps with long lenses, so it will be unlikely to cast a shadow. It is easy to use on a gimbal head since it is a arca plate on the bottom, so it will fit right into any gimbal.

Would this bracket interfere with the articulating screen of the Canon R5?

No, the ProMediaGear Boomberang BBX2 does not interfere with the EOS R5's LCD screen; the arm is positioned in front and on the right of the camera's grip and shouldn't get in your way.

The BBX series of flash bracket: Weight: 15.2 oz - 432 grams (12.7 oz - 361 grams without Plate) The titanium is an anodized process, not actually a titanium arm (silver). The weight is the same on all colors.

The BBX Boomerang Flash Bracket comes complete with a Universal Arca Swiss Bracket Plate specifically designed for the Flash Bracket. To use RRS or similar Arca plates and L-Brackets PMG Manufactures a CB60 Clamp that will allow you to use your current plate and lock it into the Arca-Type clamp that will allow the Flash Bracket to install onto the side. You will need to purchase the BBX or BBGv2 Boomerang Flash Bracket and also the CB60 Clamp with BBX mounting pins.
