Lectrosonics SSM Overview

The SSM from Lectrosonics is a miniature Digital Hybrid Wireless Transmitter with selectable frequencies across a maximum tuning range of 76.7 MHz and has selectable 25 or 50 mW RF output power. It can be used in applications where concealment in costuming is required or any other production such as for live stage, theater, houses of worship, reality TV, and more.

The SSM features selectable frequencies in 100 kHz or 25 kHz steps yielding a total of 3,072 available frequencies across three standard frequency blocks. Its lithium-ion battery provides power and sits in a stainless-steel battery door that latches closed and cannot be jarred open accidentally.

The servo bias input that is built into the transmitter accepts mic or line level signals and uses gain adjustments in 1 dB steps. The LED indicators on the membrane keypad allow you to monitor precise gain adjustments and settings. A built-in limiter in the preamp, handles signal peaks over 30 dB. This provides you with the maximum signal to noise ratio and minimum distortion for input, but still provides protection against input overloads.

The SSM is compatible with earlier analog Lectrosonics receivers IFB, and some other receivers, from manufacturers that utilize the DSP emulation mode, which is selectable in the LCD menu. The SSM transmitter housing is constructed of machined aluminum and has a hard, black electroless nickel finish called ebENi.

The SSM transmitter tunes across a range of over 76 MHz. This tuning range covers three standard Lectrosonics frequency blocks
The transmitter operates from a 3.7V rechargeable battery that will provide about four hours of operation per charge
The factory-supplied battery charger provides a folding NEMA 2-prong plug, and will operate from 100-240 VAC sources. The LED glows red during charging and turns green when the battery is fully charged
The LCD is a numeric-type Liquid Crystal Display with screens for adjusting output power, frequency, audio level, low frequency audio roll-off, and various modes and options
The antenna is a flexible whip made of galvanized steel, permanently attached to the transmitter to prevent damage from heavy use. The IR port is capped with a translucent dome material to broaden the reception angle. The input jack is a rugged 3-pin LEMO connector with a threaded locking sleeve
An infrared sync port on the SSM allows for quick setup with compatible receiver systems. A micro-B USB port makes it possible for firmware updates in the field as advanced features are added in the future
The SSM responds to remote commands for frequency, audio level, sleep modes, and other settings from the RM remote unit or 3rd party smartphone apps

This Lav system is the best system I've ever used. I'm really happy with the purchase. If you're serious about performance Lectrosonics is the way to go.

Tiny, excellent sound quality, unbelievable range, strong, and reliable--what more could you ask for? It has settings to matchthe impedance of your mic/input. I bought it primarily to use with a DPA 4061 on violin/viola, and it works great--it even has a DPA setting which makes it easy to get the best results.Comes with a rechargeable battery/charger with a 6-hour life.I bought a second battery to have a spare. When testing range (paired with the R400A receiver using its built-in whip antennas), I could not get it to drop out, even on the 25mW setting. I intentionally tuned it to a very noisy channel, took it a couple hundred feet away, and the signal was still solid (Also notable, this test was in a venue where a different wireless system by a reputable manufacturer was having issues and dropouts from all the RF noise, even though it was tuned to a clearer channel). During tests, it maintained a strong signal through several walls and everything. When unplugging the antennas from the receiver and walking it away, the audio quality would degrade when the signal dropped really low, but it was very difficult to get it to drop out--I had to walk it behind walls and bend the antenna of the SSM transmitter in order to get it to drop out momentarily--and this is with no antennas in the receiver! With the antennas in, I also couldn't get it to overload the receiver--even when touching the receiver & transmitter antennas together with the SSM on the 50mW setting. They've done some kind of magic with their RF systems... Lectrosonics is very well known in the broadcast/film industry, but not as common in live/concert sound and I'm not sure why... We live sound folk tend to stay with Shure and Sennheiser when it comes to RF systems, but I hope that Lectrosonics becomes more commonplace for concert riders, because it sure deserves to be. They've made their way more into the Broadway and Cirque du Soleil scene, and I believe theaters can really benefit from the size/quality/reliabilityof these--pair it with a Venue2 and you're golden. They are priceythough, and, unfortunately, you probably won't be able to find it for less from any dealer since Lectrosonics has a unilateral pricing policy. But you get what you pay for.

Is there an adapter for lectrosonics compatible ...

Is there an adapter for lectrosonics compatible (TA5F) lavs, or would I need to get new lavs for this?
Asked by: David
Although we have seen custom adapters to convert TA5F to 3-Pin Lemo, we recommend using lavaliers with dedicated wiring for the Lectrosonics SSM Digital Hybrid Wireless Miniature Transmitter. B&H does not offer adapters of this nature at this time.

question

I have a lot of Sennheiser lavs with a 3.5mm connector. Is there an adapter that will connect my Sennheiser mics to the 3 pin lemo of this receiver?
Asked by: Jeff M.
Unfortunately there would be no adapters available to connect a lavalier wired with a Sennheiser mini jack to connect with a Lectrosonics transmitter.
