The Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K is a compact Ultra HD camera designed for live productions. It features the same image sensor found in Blackmagic's Studio Camera 4K, which supports 3840 x 2160 video up to 30 fps and 1080p video up to 60 fps. The camera is equipped with an active MFT mount that can accept native MFT lenses or be adapted to a wide range of other modern and vintage lenses, including B4 lenses. It outputs 10-bit 4:2:2 video via 6G-SDI and can be remotely controlled from an ATEM switcher using SDI control protocol. The camera packs many professional studio features into a compact form factor, including a built-in color corrector, talkback, tally indicator, PTZ control output, and B4 lens control output.

Compact in size, the Micro Studio Camera 4K is similar in size and shape to an action camera, making it easy to hide on set or mount in places or on rigs where a larger camera can't fit. It is equipped with a unique expansion port, which expands the camera's connections through an included breakout cable. The breakout cable offers connections such as a PTZ serial output for use with motorized heads and B4 data link output for controlling broadcast lenses. It also includes DC power input, LANC control, and genlock reference input. Additional connectors found on the camera body itself include an HDMI monitor output and 3.5mm audio input. The camera is powered using an included AC power adapter. It can also be powered for up to 70 minutes by attaching an optional Canon LP-E6 type battery to the back of the camera.

Compact Size for Live Productions
The Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K is engineered with a durable magnesium alloy core in a body that's not much larger than the lens mount itself. The small size of the Micro Studio Camera 4K makes it ideal for a wide range of live productions. It can be hidden just about anywhere on set, giving you the ability to have more camera angles than ever before so you can create a more interesting program. You can even hide them on stage to get shots of live performances or fly them overhead on rigs during sporting events. It can also be used in the studio by rigging it with a professional broadcast lens and an optional Blackmagic Video Assist for monitoring.
Ultra HD Image Sensor
The Micro Studio Camera 4K has an Ultra HD sensor that delivers 3840 x 2160p and 1080p resolution video. The Micro Studio Camera 4K has a 6G-SDI connection that supports up to 30 fps in Ultra HD and can also be switched to 3G-SDI or HD-SDI, so it can operate up to 60 fps at 1080p. If you're working in HD or Ultra HD the Micro Studio Camera 4K can easily handle both.
Active Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount
The Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K features an active Micro Four Thirds lens mount that lets you take advantage of the wide range of compact MFT prime and zoom lenses. They can be remotely controlled using the return SDI program feed from your ATEM switcher or the expansion port on the camera. You can also add optional third-party lens mount adapters to a wide range of modern and vintage lenses, including broadcast B4 lenses.
Expansion Port
The camera features an expansion port that offers multiple control connections using the included expansion cable, such as a PTZ serial output connection so you can use motorized heads and a B4 data link output for controlling broadcast lenses. You can even build customized camera control solutions using the S.Bus input. The expansion connector uses a common DB-HD15 connector so experienced users can make their own cables. The expansion port also includes DC camera power in, LANC, and reference input.
Remote Camera Control
The Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K works with standard SDI camera control protocols, which means that you can connect the program feed from any model of ATEM switcher to the camera's SDI input and remotely control any setting in the camera, color correct, or even change focus, iris, and zoom on supported lenses. Broadcast cameras traditionally have basic CCU color balance controls; however, the Micro Studio Camera 4K includes a full DaVinci primary color corrector so you get so much more than simple CCU controls because you can also do a full color grade in the camera.
Broadcast Connections
The Micro Studio Camera 4K includes a full-size HDMI connector so you can add a monitor to the camera or quickly plug in a local monitor when you're setting the position of a remote camera or changing camera menus. There is a mini BNC connector for the main camera 6G-SDI output and a mini BNC connector for the 6G-SDI camera program input which can be used to provide reference, control camera CCU settings, return talkback audio, and tally status. There is a 3.5mm mic input for external microphones and a 3.5mm headphone socket that supports an iPhone-compatible mic so you can use it for talkback.
Audio
The built-in stereo microphones are engineered for high-quality audio and feature a mechanical design that helps reduce unwanted wind noise so you get great-sounding audio. When you need better audio in windy outdoor conditions such as sporting events, you can plug in an external mic with a windscreen to the 3.5mm stereo mini jack to capture cleaner sound. The camera instantly switches to the external microphone when one is connected and works with both line or mic levels.
Built-In Talkback
The Micro Studio Camera 4K includes an iPhone-style headphone socket with a mic so you get full talkback support. You can also use standard noise-canceling headsets, like those from Bose, Sennheiser, and more, to hear the technical director without distraction from the audience. Because the camera has an SDI connection to the switcher and an SDI connection from the switcher, the talkback audio is embedded into channels 15 and 16 of the SDI signal and you get two-way communication. If you're setting up fixed cameras, talkback makes it easy to walk from camera to camera and plug in your headset to communicate with the rest of the crew to get the best angles and framing.
Canon LP-E6 Battery Compatible
The camera includes a 12V to 30V DC power input so you can power the camera using any standard power supply, such as the included AC power adapter. There is a also standard Canon LP-E6 type battery receptacle on the back of the camera so you can add a battery to get local backup power if the power supply gets accidentally disconnected during a critical live broadcast. The power input is located on the expansion port so you can simply connect power to the breakout cable or you can make a custom cable so you can have multiple camera connections over longer distances and all down a single cable loom.
Camera Setting Adjustment
The built-in row of buttons along the front of the camera gives you quick and easy access to power, menu navigation, and settings. Because they're on the front, the buttons are always accessible, even when rigged into tight locations. Simply plug into any HDMI display such as a TV or the portable Blackmagic Video Assist, so you can see the camera's menus, and you can easily change any of the camera's settings. You can use the menus to set the camera up and then that allows the switcher to take control of the camera via the SDI program input.
Additional Features
  • Three 1/4"-20 mounting threads on the bottom, one 1/4"-20 thread on top
  • USB 2.0 port for software updates

These are amazing cameras! I bought two for our church auditorium to connect to our ATEM board. Well worth the money.

Good camera, missing some features.

Decent image quality and build - very good for the price. Small size is great, though youll have to use the breakout cable for 99% of uses, making it a little more unwieldy. The main issue is features it doesnt have. Theres no option to choose which output you want the menu to be visible to. As such, I have to add an HDMI monitor every time I want to change any settings. The gain tops out at 12db, which is fine for most applications, but I couldve used another 6db of range. The baked-in rec709 is a little frustrating. Perhaps the strangest thing is that when using a lens that has auto focus, the camera doesnt hold focus between power cycles. We have one mounted in the corner of a large room and I have to go focus it manually every time we turn it on. This is a pretty big headache. It seems like some of these issues could be fixed with a firmware update, and I hope they are because I really want to like this camera.

Good camera. But hard- not to say impossible to see the tally light with certain lenses.

Great first studio camera

I had deliberated about purchasing this camera for months compared to purchasing a mirror less camera for my blog especially considering the fact that it's a barebones camera requiring so many other accessories to be useful. I think this was a great decision as i can grow into 4K and it gives me the look and feel of being in a studio paired with my ATEM switcher

AMAZING

This is an AMAZING camera. We have an arm with this camera, and have been able to hang it in some odd places (like behind a glass backboard looking down to the key on a bball court), and its given us some amazing shots because of it. Small and light-weight. We use the HDMI output to align the shot, and then the mini-bnc to a BMD camera converter so as to run fiber back to our ATEM. We have full remote control of it.

Easy to set to the resolution you want. I was happy that it came with a battery but also cabling needed for power supply.

AMAZING CAMERA BUT...

Love this camera for our purposes. BUT... The BlackMagic Video Assist (which is designed to take HDMI or SDI from the camera and preview or record to an SD card the footage), they are not fully compatible. If you plug both devices into the same outlet, it creates a voltage loop that fries the SDI output on the camera. Apparently this is a known, but not fixed issue. We had to return both cameras and are now very careful to run them on separate outlets. Disappointing that this is a known issue for 4+ years without resolve or warning labels.

question

What kind of color profile(s) does this camera have? Is it the standard BM Video, and Film? How does it compare to the other BM film profiles in other BM cameras, like the BMPC4k for example. Will it match?
Asked by: Nicholas T.
Sorry, I am not a specialist. I bought this camera for someone else to film surgery for me. I did notice compared to the BMPCC and first generation BMCC that it has a lower dynamic range (no compression for post) and in the signal, the colours are very rich through both HDMI and SDI. I did not have any problems with the sensor, and using a Zeiss prime with adaptor the level of detail is incredible. I think it is suited for videography rather than cinematography. I use the Atomos Shogun for capture. Remote management works up to a point for MFT lenses ( there are very few power zoom ones) using a Manfrotto lanc - ( focus / iris/ zoom) but I have not been able to use the start-stop via remote. The battery lasts relatively short time but with a power pack and adaptor it gets the job done fine. For me, upgrading from a Sony 4k camcorder XAVCs - fist generation - to this, has been a major increase in quality, but also significant increase in file sizes. I have only used ProRes Lt, but for a demanding project, I think it can be amazing in higher quality. I don't think it is as good in low light, but I am not the right person to advise about it. For what I use it- filming surgery- I absolutely love it. L

question

I know the HD version of this camera has an optional Rolling/Global shutter but I can't seem to see any such spec reference for this cam... does anybody know for sure what the spec is? Rolling, Global, or Rolling/Global switchable?
Asked by: Aaron
There is an update to this from Blackmagic as of March 17th, 2016. The Micro Studio Camera 4K will only have a rolling shutter. No global shutter is available at this time.

I currently own a BMPCC and Metabones Speedbooster for Nikon. Will this Speedbooster work on the BMPC Micro?
Asked by: Danny
We believe you have the Metabones Nikon G Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Speed Booster B&H # MENGBMPCCSBB. Our understanding this is only for the Pocket camera and not other cameras. What we recommend is the Metabones Nikon G Lens to Blackmagic 2.5k Cinema Camera with Micro-4/3 Mount Speed Booster B&H # MENGBMCCBBM.

Is it possible to have camera and lens remote ...

Is it possible to have camera and lens remote control through HDMI connected to ATEM mini? If not, is there a turnaround when using ATEM mini?
Asked by: Kyriakos
It is not possible. The HDMI output on this camera is for a Monitor only. Lens control through ATEM software is only available through an SDI Connection. You will need to use SDI cables and have an ATEM switcher with SDI connections for control of a lens.

question

Which PTZ-heads are compatible with this camera? So we can use it with the blackmagic atem software package in combination with the expansion cable.
Asked by: Teun G.
One possible motorized pan/tilt remote head is this one. PTZOptics PT-Broadcaster-E PTZ Controller for Broadcast Cameras with Mini 8-Pin Lens Control Jacks B&H # PTBRDCSTRE. At this time BMD ATEM software cannot control pan/tilt/zoom. It can control video on the camera but cannot control the remote head motors. You need a separate control board. Nowadays that board can be virtual. PTZOptics VISCA Control Software B&H # PTZVISCA
